Mariano Rivera is not expected to pitch in the World Baseball Classic for Panama while recovering from shoulder surgery, according to MLB.com.

Our View:This is disappointing news for fans of the Panama club, but Rivera is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.
October 7, 2008
Yankees closer Mariano Rivera will have right shoulder surgery Tuesday, according to the New York Post.

Our View:The surgery is going to be performed by noted shoulder guru Dr. David Altchek. He will remove calcification from the top of the future Hall of Famer's shoulder.
October 3, 2008
Yankees closer Mariano Rivera will have surgery on his right shoulder on Tuesday to repair calcification on the AC joint, according to Yankees.com.

Our View:Rivera is expected to be ready to pitch in spring training, but shoulder injuries can be tricky to deal with. That said, he did pitch most of the season with the pain, and was as dominant as ever, sporting a 0.67 WHIP.
September 29, 2008
Mariano Rivera will have off-season surgery on his ailing right shoulder but should be ready to throw by spring training, according to the AP.

Our View:The procedure will shave down calcification of the A.C. joint on the top of Rivera’s shoulder. The surgery hasn’t been scheduled, but manager Joe Girardi said it doesn’t appear to be a serious injury and there is no structural damage. The date for the surgery and where it will be performed should be set later this week. The 38-year-old nailed down 39 saves in 2008, with a microscopic 0.67 WHIP.
September 26, 2008
Mariano Rivera's check up with the doctor found some bone spurs in his shoulder, and the initial recommendation is that he undergoes surgery to correct the issue, according to The Journal News. Rivera will seek a second opinion before going under the knife.

Our View:When you are 38 every surgery is major, even if it's just arthroscopic. Add in the fact that this is an issue with his shoulder, usually a bigger concern than an elbow, and we are slightly nervous. Given his tremendous work on the hill this season (1.43 ERA, 0.68 WHIP) it clearly didn't effect his performance, though any future efforts will need to be monitored closely if he has the operation.
September 25, 2008
MLB.com reports that with no chance at a postseason entry, the Yankees permitted Mariano Rivera to leave the club on Thursday to complete his end-of-season physical examination in New York. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that he had no plans to use the 38-year-old on Wednesday or Thursday after he pitched in four of the club's last five games, including the final inning at Yankee Stadium on Sunday. Girardi said the trip should not be construed as an injury issue.

Our View:If you own Rivera, it's time to find someone else to take his place. Rivera had the lowest WHIP of his career in 2008 at 0.68.
September 21, 2008
Mariano Rivera earned his 38th save of the season in what is almost certainly the last game in Yankee Stadium history on Sunday night. Only a miracle finish and a complete Boston collapse could could lead to more game action in the historic yard.

Our View:Rivera lowered his ERA to 1.45 in his bid to eclipse his career best mark of 1.38. He won't make it unless he pitches nearly every day the rest of the way as he will need four scoreless innings to blow past the mark. He has been as dominating as any pitcher in baseball this season no matter what his final ERA is.
September 19, 2008
The New York Daily News manager Joe Girardi says that he would like Mariano Rivera to pitch the final inning at Yankee Stadium regardless of whether it's a save situation because "rightfully, in the ninth inning there's only one guy to have on the mound."

Our View:If the game is tied, this becomes an interesting decision. We shouldn't have to tell you to have the Sandman in your lineup on Sunday and everyday the Yankees play.
September 15, 2008
With Mariano Rivera's save on Monday night he moved into second place all-time on the career saves list. The save was his 479th, according to the AP.

Our View:Rivera has now passed Lee Smith on the save list and is now only behind Trevor Hoffman.
September 15, 2008
It only took Mariano Rivera seven pitches to close the door on the Yankees 4-2 win over the White Sox, and record his 36th save of the year.

Our View:Rivera has only given up two earned runs over his last ten games and continues to lower his ERA and WHIP while he raises his number of saves.
September 6, 2008
Mariano Rivera needed 13 pitches to get 1.1 innnings against the Mariners for his 33rd save of the season. He gave up no hits and lowered his ERA to 1.43.

Our View:The Sandman just doesn't quit. Despite being 38, he currently has the lowest WHIP (0.68) of his Hall-of-Fame career.
August 15, 2008
Mariano Rivera picked up his fifth loss of the year Friday, allowing a run to cross on a wild pitch in the Yanks' 5-4 defeat to Kansas City. Mo allowed two hits but struck out two in his inning.

Our View:We'll cut Mo some slack. His ERA on the year ballooned to 1.70 with this outing.
August 12, 2008
The first blown save of the season was suffered by Yankee future Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera, giving up a three-run homer to Minnesota outfielder Delmon Young in the bottom of the eighth inning to surrender a lead and force extra innings.

Our View:The homer was one of just two hits allowed by Rivera, an unusual failure in an otherwise stellar season (again) for Rivera.
August 3, 2008
Mariano Rivera was unavailable on Sunday because of back spasms, according to the Associated Press. Rivera doesn't believe the injury is serious and hopes to be available on Monday.

Our View:Rivera hasn't been slowed by hitters at all this season so the only thing that might be able to do so appears to be injury. Given that the issues seems minor, it doesn't look like even injuries will keep him down.
August 1, 2008
Mariano Rivera gave up a game losing hit to Torii Hunter on Friday night to pick up his fourth loss of the season for the Yankees.

Our View:Rivera still sports a 1.49 ERA in 44 appearances after allowing a single run tonight. Look for him to bounce back in his next outing.
July 23, 2008
Mariano Rivera picked up his 25th save of the season on Wednesday by retiring the only batter he faced in the Yankees victory over the Yankees.

Our View:Rivera has 25 saves against zero blown saves. If not for the work of Francisco Rodriguez, Rivera would likely be the talk of AL relievers at this point as he has been simply marvelous.
July 10, 2008
Mariano Rivera could start for the American League in the All-Star Game, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:That would be quite a change for the Yankees closer. He started 10 games his rookie year, but has yet to make a start since.
July 6, 2008
Mariano Rivera pitched two innings of one-hit ball to earn his third win of the season. He threw just 16 pitches, 13 for strikes, to get six Boston batters out.

Our View:The Sandman still has it a night after nearly blowing a save against his rivals.
July 5, 2008
Mariano Rivera made it extremely interesting on Saturday night before nailing down his 23rd save of the year against the Red Sox. Rivera allowed a run, two hits, and hit Manny Ramirez with a pitch before picking up the save.

Our View:Rivera has been so tremendous this year that he is bound to suffer a hiccup or two, but the fact that he still managed to earn a save in one of those outings is very encouraging.
June 28, 2008
Mariano Rivera worked a perfect ninth inning helping the Yankees defeat the Mets 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Our View:Rivera has yet to blow a save this year in 22 chances.
June 15, 2008
Mariano Rivera is 38-years old but rarely is he thought of as old, or past his prime. In fact the right-hander is showing no indication he is regressing as a pitcher. The Yanks closer is 18 for 18 in saves; and his 0.87 ERA, 9.3 K/9 and 0.9 BB/9 can't be ignored.

Our View:After watching Papelbon blow his third save of the season on Saturday, to match his total of 2007, it's hard to consider him the automatic he was in April or even the top closer in the game without mentioning Rivera.
June 11, 2008
Yankee reliever Mariano Rivera has appeared in four consecutive games, but manager Joe Girardi has hinted they will not look his way tonight, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Girardi was asked about Riveria's workload before the game and noted that he had intended to leave him be on Tuesday night as well, but Rivera was up and stretching before he realized what was going on in the bullpen. Tonight, he should have the day off.
June 11, 2008
The Yankees keep trotting Mariano Rivera out to the hill. The closer picked up his 17th save by tossing a scoreless inning against the A's on Tuesday night. Rivera has now worked four straight games. He allowed runs on Saturday and Monday.

Our View:With Joba Chamberlain in the rotation, the Yankees clearly aren't taking any chances with the game on the line. We imagine Rivera won't be available on Wednesday night, no matter what the scenario.
June 2, 2008
Mariano Rivera has been named the AL Player of the Week, according to the AP. He earned the honor by nailing down three saves, with seven strikeouts, and only one hit allowed.

Our View:He is a perfect 15-for-15 on saves opportunities, and lowered his ERA to 0.36. He ranks third on the all-time saves list, but this is his first Player of the Week honor.
May 28, 2008
Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect 9th inning Wednesday to earn his 13th save of the year in 13 opportunities. He struck out one batter.

Our View:Mo certainly hasn't been pitching like a guy who turned 38 over the offseason. He boasts a 0.39 ERA and 0.52 WHIP with 21 Ks and just one walk in 23 innings this year.
May 14, 2008
Mariano Rivera earned his 11th save of the season as the Yankees ended the Rays' six-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night.

Our View:Rivera worked a perfect ninth inning striking out one.
May 14, 2008
Mariano Rivera gave up his the first run all season on Tuesday night when Gabe Gross hit an RBI single giving Tampa Bay a 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees sending the Rays into first place in the AL East.

Our View:Rivera has been outstanding this year. His .056 ERA and 13 strikeouts to zero walks in 16 innings pitched, is as good as it gets. While most consider Jon Papelbon the best ninth inning option in baseball, one could argue that the Yankee veteran still reigns.
May 7, 2008
Mariano Rivera was awarded the DHL Major League Delivery Man of the Month of April, according to MLB.com. Rivera went 8-for-8 on the month with a perfect 0.00 ERA.

Our View:Rivera continues to be one of the best reliever in the game and reports of his demise have been greatly exaggerated. Consider yourself lucky if you grabbed him in the middle of the closer run on draft day.
April 14, 2008
Mariano Rivera cleaned up the bullpen's mess on Monday and recorded his fourth save of the season. Rivera worked a spotless 1.1 innings after Billy Traber and Brian Bruney allowed four runs over 1.2 frames.

Our View:Rivera is erasing memories of his down 2007 by opening this season with five scoreless outings.
April 2, 2008
Mariano Rivera nailed down a save in the Yankees' season opener on Tuesday, as he held Toronto hitless over his inning, with a strikeout. Rivera should remain a strong closer.
March 25, 2008
Mariano Rivera struck out all three batters in his lone inning of work against Philadelphia on Monday, and his only blemish was a walk. Rivera should remain a reliable closer this season.
March 7, 2008
Mariano Rivera returned to action on Friday and pitched very well as he went one inning and retired the side on a mere eight pitches, according to MLB.com.
March 6, 2008
Mariano Rivera will make his first appearance of the spring on Friday, this according to a report on the AP. Rivera is coming off his worst season of his career, though 30 saves and a 1.12 WHIP certainly are a great floor for a closer, so draft Rivera as a top-10 closer with confidence yet again.
