The Mariners handed Matt Lawton his release on Tuesday, ten days after designating him for assignment. Lawton hit .259 with no home runs and one RBI in 27 at-bats for Seattle.

The Mariners granted Matt Lawton his wish by designating him for assignment on Saturday, according to the AP. The team now has 10 days to trade or release Lawton, who appeared in only 11 games, going 7-for-27 (.259) with one RBI.

Mariners GM Bill Bavasi said Monday that the relationship between his team and Matt Lawton was fine, according to the AP. Lawton has been unhappy with his lack of playing time, but he's played a bit more often of late.

Matt Lawton said he asked Mariners' management to release him several weeks ago so he could get regular playing time with another team, according to the Seattle Times. Lawton wasn't happy about his inconsistent playing time. "It's impossible to stay ready," Lawton said. "You sit down for two weeks, then OK, you get one start, then OK, you get two starts. Now I'm sitting again, and then you're going to be lost again." Lawton played three straight games this week before sitting yesterday.

Matt Lawton started in place of the struggling Jeremy Reed in center field for the Mariners on Monday, according to the AP. Manager Mike Hargrove said the move isn't permanent, but will probably last more than one game.
