Joe Borowski has reportedly been offered a minor league deal by the Red Sox, according to the Boston Herald. If the Sox sign Borowski, he would be eligible to pitch in the postseason even if he does not appear in the major leagues until after September 1. MLB rules require only that a player be part of an organization before September 1 in order to maintain postseason eligibility.

Our View:Borowski would not see any save chances in Boston if Jon Papelbon remains intact, and his innings would be very limited in a strong bullpen.
July 10, 2008
According to PA Sports Ticker, the Cleveland Indians have officially released former closer Joe Borowski.

Our View:Even if Borowski is picked up by another MLB team, his days as a closer are most likely over. Its safe to drop Borowski in all formats.
July 4, 2008
Joe Borowski has been designated for assignment, according to Scout.com.

Our View:Borowski has been terrible as a closer and the Tribe simply could not afford to keep him. Fantasy players shouldn't keep him around either, as his days as a closer for any team are over.
July 3, 2008
Joe Borowski's role as closer will be the subject of talks among Indians management on today's off day, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Manager Eric Wedge would not say if Masa Kobayashi will take over that role. "I'm not going to speculate on that. It takes us down a road that doesn't do anyone any good," he said.

Our View:Borowski blew a save on July 1, upping his ERA to 7.56, and he hasn't pitched since. Kobayashi gave up the game winning home run last night in his second inning of work, but the fact he was going two innings of a tie game says a lot about the team's confidence in him.
June 26, 2008
Joe Borowski pitched the ninth inning on Thursday and was perfect in wrapping up his sixth save of the year to drop his ERA to 7.70.

Our View:Borowski has allowed 11 hits and three walks in eight innings in June as he just doesn't have the stuff to put away most batters. Still, he has the confidence of management, and given the struggles of others in the pen they figure to keep running him out there in save situations regardless.
June 11, 2008
Cleveland reliever Joe Borowski hasn't been the picture of stability this season but hopes of a reversal of fortunes had come alive with better results over recent weeks. Tonight he may have ruined that momentum, out of position for the save but still in the game in the ninth in the 8-5 loss to Minnesota. Borowski pitched one inning, giving up two runs (both earned) on three hits on just 24 pitches.

Our View:This pushes Borowski's ERA back to 9.00 on the season. He had worked three appearances in May and two in early June without surrendering a single run, but tonight the horrors of the early season returned.
June 6, 2008
Joe Borowski picked up his fifth save Friday in the Tribe's win over Detroit. The closer has notched three saves and has yet to allow a run in five appearances since returning from a triceps injury.

Our View:Borowski's job is very safe right now, but as we all know, he can blow up at any time and change that.
May 24, 2008
Joe Borowski picked up his first save since returning from the DL Saturday, allowing one hit in a scoreless ninth inning versus the Rangers.

Our View:Borowski is still a major risk, but he's got a firm grip on the closer job for now and should be started by those that own him.
May 23, 2008
The Indians have activated Joe Borowski off the 15-day DL, according to the Sports Network. The closer has been out since April 14 due to a strained right triceps.

Our View:Joe-Bo is expected to regain his closer's role, and it helps that Rafael Betancourt and Masa Kobayashi both mangled their chances while Borowski was out. We don't know that Joe will be any sharper than was earlier in the season, but, hey, he has the gig.
May 22, 2008
Indians reliever Joe Borowski is set to be activated from the 15-day disabled list on Friday and will immediately return to action, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Borowski completed his rehab assignment with Double-A Akron on Wednesday night as he attempts to recover from a right triceps strain. The team has not announced their plans for a corresponding roster move to make room for Borowski, but they believer their closer will be ready to pitch for the Indians this weekend.
May 21, 2008
Joe Borowski could return to the Indians by the end of this week, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Manager Eric Wedge said, "He looked good, he felt good and he threw good during his Monday rehab session. If he has another good day today, we'll probably activate him by the end of the week."

Our View:Borowski would likely resume his closing role immediately, but remains a risky fantasy option, as he was lit up for eight runs over four innings before leaving the team, with four walks issued.
May 19, 2008
Joe Borowski (strained triceps) turn in the minors might be brief as the team could recall their closer after just one minor league appearance, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. "I'm hoping at most he'll need [both of those], Monday and Wednesday," manager Eric Wedge said. "Then we can get him back in there after that."

Our View:Sure the Indians are experiencing some issues with their bullpen, but is rushing Borowski back such a good idea? It's not as if Borowski was lights out anyway considering his 18.00 ERA and 2.75 WHIP over five outings this year.
May 16, 2008
Joe Borowski threw a two-inning simulated game on Friday at Great American Ballpark, and said he was fit to start his rehab assignment Monday night at Class-A Lake County, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Borowski threw 36 pitches against Asdrubal Cabrera, Jamey Carroll, Andy Marte and Franklin Gutierrez. Borowski said, "All systems are go. You have to judge how you feel every day. So far, knock on wood, everything has been good."

Our View:Borowski is expected to pitch the first inning Monday night at Lake County. He said after that he'll probably pitch an inning out of the bullpen for Double-A Akron. He has been on the DL since April 15 due to a strained right triceps. Borowski will resume his closer's role when he returns, if he is 100% recovered.
May 14, 2008
Joe Borowski will test his strained right triceps when he twirls for the Low-A Lake County Captains on Monday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Our View:We're not sure how long Borowski's rehab stint will last, but we imagine the Indians will make him prove his velocity and endurance over at least three outings. Borowski is expected to regain his closer's role when ready.
May 11, 2008
Joe Borowski threw another bullpen session on Saturday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. The closer will work two more sessions over the coming four days, then follow up with a simulated game and a rehab assignment. Borowski is on the DL due to a strained right triceps.

Our View:The Indians believe he'll be back before the end of the month, and Borowski is expected to regain his closer's role. Whether or not he'll be effective and keep the job is another matter.
May 8, 2008
Joe Borowski reported that his his arm felt great after his first bullpen session on Thursday, according to MLB.com. "A huge difference," he said. "I could see my arm speed, compared with the way it was before, was decidedly better."

Our View:Borowksi is scheduled to throw four bullpen sessions every other day, then a simulated game, then go out on a short rehab assignment. When healthy, it appears that Borowski will slide back into the closers role with Rafael Bentancourt moving back into his customary setup role.
May 7, 2008
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that closer Joe Borowski (right triceps) is scheduled to throw a bullpen Thursday at Yankee Stadium.

Our View:When Borowski is ready to go on a rehab assignment, Wedge doesn't think it will take too long for the right-hander to get his arm strength back, and then return as the team's ninth inning option.
May 6, 2008
Joe Borowski will move up from playing catch to a bullpen session on Thursday, MLB.com reports. "If he feels good and strong," manager Eric Wedge says, "it won't take too much time. He's not too far away." Borowski is out due to a strained right triceps.

Our View:Borowski will likely go on at least a short minor league stint before jumping back to the majors. He is expected to regain his closer's role, at least until he blows up again.
April 29, 2008
Joe Borowski threw for the second straight day Tuesday, expanding out to 75 feet. The reliever said his strained right triceps has responded well to the rest. "It's feeling as normal as normal can be right now," Borowski said on MLB.com. "Hopefully, it just keeps progressing." Borowski is expected to miss at least another two weeks as he builds his arm strength back up.

Our View:Rafael Betancourt is 2-for-2 in save opportunities since taking over the closer role, but manager Eric Wedge has said that Borowski will resume his closing duties when he returns.
April 28, 2008
Indians closer Joe Borowski played catch for the first time since going on the disabled list two weeks ago with a strained triceps, this according to the AP. "It felt as normal as normal can be," said Borowski, who threw from 60 feet and will increase his distance every day with a goal of pitching off a mound in nine days.

Our View:When Borowski returns, there is no guarantee he will reclaim his ninth inning role now held by Rafael Betancourt.
April 15, 2008
The Plain Dealer suggests that closer Joe Borowski and the team have hidden the right-handers injury this season. The report notes that the team entered the season with Borowski still hurting, denied he was hurt on April 7 after he gave up a walk-off grand slam to Torii Hunter and were still playing dumb Monday night after Borowski gave it up again against Manny Ramirez.

Our View:Questioning the papers speculation one would obviously ask what was the point in hiding an injury. This isn't football, or basketball where opposing players could utilize the information. The Indians have no timetable for Borowski's return, but it is again speculated that he could miss as much as a month.
April 15, 2008
Joe Borowski has been placed on the 15-day DL, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. He was brought down due to his strained triceps muscle, and notably blew his last two save chances.

Our View:The team did not specify how much time he will miss, and the team called up pitcher Tom Mastny from Triple-A to fill his open spot on the roster.
April 15, 2008
Joe Borowski may undergo tests on Tuesday to figure out if there's anything wrong with his right shoulder. He feels strong on some days, but his arm is weak lacks pop on other days. "I hope we can pinpoint something," Borowski tells the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. "Right now, it's driving me crazy. I'm grasping at straws. Maybe it's something. Maybe it's nothing."

Our View:The Indians aren't short on possible replacement candidates should Borowski go on the DL. Rafael Betancourt and Rafael Perez were the top options coming into the season, but those two setup men are also struggling. Masa Kobayashi, Jensen Lewis, or Jorge Julio could also enter the mix. First things first, though, we'll have to wait and see if there's anything wrong with Borowski.
April 14, 2008
Joe Borowski blew up again on Monday. He allowed four hits and three runs in the ninth inning against the Red Sox. Manny Ramirez topped off the damage with a two-run homer.

Our View:It's nearly a full-blown epidemic in Cleveland, as top setup men Rafael Betancourt and Rafael Perez are also struggling.
April 8, 2008
The velocity on Joe Borowski's fastball was clocked around 85 MPH Monday when he gave up a grand slam to Torii Hunter. The Indians aren't worried yet, but they are exploring the possibility that Borowski may be hurt. "We'll see how he feels [Tuesday] and go from there," manager Eric Wedge said on MLB.com. "There's nothing that says he isn't [healthy]. We'll see after he plays catch." Borowski is probably unavailable tonight after pitching two straight days, and Rafael Betancourt is definitely unavailable after pitching three straight days, so if the Indians need someone to close they'll likely turn to Jensen Lewis or Rafael Perez. We'll keep you posted on how Borowski is feeling.
April 8, 2008
Joe Borowski gave up a grand slam to Torii Hunter on Monday night to pick up a loss and a blown save against the Angels. And so it starts. Borowski figures to be a high-wire act all season as he attempts to hold on to the closers job in Cleveland. For those of you out there hoping Rafael Betancourt will step into the void, he too struggled on Monday night allowing one run in an inning as he has now allowed a shocking nine hits in 3.1 innings.
April 6, 2008
Joe Borowski pitched the ninth inning of Sunday's win over Oakland for his second save in as many chances. Borowski, who is considered a risky proposition due to his suspect numbers in '07, cut his '08 ERA (4.50) in half with today's work.
March 31, 2008
In typical fashion Monday, Joe Borowski gave the opposing team ninth inning hope as he allowed two Chicago base runners to reach before closing out a Rafael Betancourt win with his first save of the season. Borowski lead the league in save last season.
March 8, 2008
In an attempt to avoid a fall from last season's success, the Cleveland Indians are opening the bullpen to a full-blown competition rather than put full faith in Joe Borowski , according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. To create an ideal situation for this season, the Indians have brought back the entire bullpen with the addition of Japanese right-hander Masa Kobayashi. They've also opened one of the seven spots for competition with holdover Tom Mastny competing against spring-training invitees Jorge Julio, Rick Bauer, Scott Elarton and others. GM Mark Shapiro is reluctant to say what lies ahead for 2008. Shapiro and scouts note Rafael Betancourt could be the player to watch should Borowski struggle while Kobayashi, Rafael Perez, and Aaron Fultz could be viewed as optimal setup men.
March 5, 2008
Joe Borowski allowed three runs in the fourth inning on Wednesday as he continues to be an adventure while on the hill. Borowski will start the season as the Indians closer, but if he continues to make his managers heart race every time he takes the hill, the Indians might turn to Rafael Betancourt or Masahide Kobayashi to take over that role.
February 22, 2008
Joe Borowski is just five pounds lighter (212 pounds) than he was at the end of last season, but he's apparently in much better shape, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "Joe is in tremendous shape," said manager Eric Wedge. "He's committed to himself and this game physically later in his career maybe like no other reliever I've seen." Borowski said he took to a challenge from director of media relations Bart Swain to be the leaner of the two when camp began.
