The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Cardinals will not pursue Edgar Renteria until the Tigers decide whether to offer the shortstop arbitration. The Tigers are unlikely to offer arbitration, but the Cardinals would lose their first-round pick if they sign Renteria before the mid-December arbitration deadline.

Our View:Renteria is still a good fit for the Cardinals, who are looking for more offense at the shortstop position than Cesar Izturis provided last season.

Edgar Renteria's agent (Barry Meister) has stated that the Giants would be a good fit for his client, according to MLB.com. Meister said, "Clearly St. Louis and San Francisco are two clubs where they seem to have a fit, and where I know Edgar would really have some interest. That's really where we are today. There haven't been any long discussions about it, but we've identified those two clubs as being among the clubs that would be a good fit."

Our View:Renteria would be a solid replacement for 41-year-old shortstop Omar Vizquel, who the Giants are likely going to let walk. His defense is on the decline, but his offensive numbers could benefit from a return to the NL.

Our View:Renteria could benefit from playing in a lineup with Albert Pujols again, but still might not be a viable fantasy option this year.

If the Oakland A's cannot land shortstop Rafael Furcal, they will be interested in acquiring Edgar Renteria, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:Renteria had a disappointing year in 2008, and at age 33, his days of being a fantasy option in mixed leagues could be winding down, especially in a park like Oakland's, which is a noted pitcher's park.

The Cardinals may be interested in bringing back shortstop Edgar Renteria after the Tigers declined his 2009 option, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:The 33-year-old could benefit from a return to St. Louis, as he topped .300 twice over his six seasons with the club from 1999-2004.
