One well-placed baseball executive didn't seem fond of the Giants' recent signing of Edgar Renteria, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "Dumbest move of the offseason is Renteria. He can't field or hit anymore. And he has no market value. No one else was going after him."

Our View:It remains to be seen where Renteria bats in the Giants' weak lineup, but he is coming of one of the worst seasons of his career.
December 4, 2008
The Giants have officially inked Edgar Renteria to a two-year deal for $18.5 million, according to FOX Sports.

Our View:The 33-year-old will replace Omar Vizquel at shortstop, with Emmanuel Burriss moving over to second. The Cardinals were interested in bringing back Renteria, but opted for Khalil Greene instead. Renteria was not offered arbitration by the Tigers, so the Giants do not lose draft picks by signing him.
December 3, 2008
Updating an earlier report, Edgar Renteria has taken a physical for the Giants on Wednesday so the deal appears to be done, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:The deal believed to be on the table for Renteria is a two-year contract at $18 million. We'll let you know when the deal is official.
December 3, 2008
The San Francisco Giants are getting closer to a deal with shortstop Edgar Renteria that could be for two years at about $9 million per year, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com.

Our View:Renteria is 33 years of age and hit .270/.317/.382 last year with Detroit and is obviously on the decline, so the price tag seems excessive if the numbers are correct, but the Giants certainly need to address their shortstop situation.
December 2, 2008
San Francisco is keeping up its pursuit of free agent shortstop Edgar Renteria, according to the AP.

Our View:The Tigers didn't offer Renteria arbitration so any team can sign him without surrendering draft picks.
December 1, 2008
The Tigers have declined to offer Edgar Renteria salary arbitration, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View:Renteria is a Type-A free agent, meaning the Tigers will be missing out on two potential compensatory draft picks if and when Renteria inks with a new MLB club. If Renteria had accepted an arbitration offer, the Tigers would have been responsible for paying him a salary near the $9 million he made in 2008.
November 30, 2008
The Tigers are not likely going to offer shortstop Edgar Renteria arbitration, according to their official team website.

Our View:Renteria has garnered interest from a few clubs, including San Francisco, but the Tigers are not believed to be interested in bringing him back. The risk of offering him arbitration is that Renteria could accept and return to Detroit under a one-year deal at a salary determined by an arbitrator.
November 25, 2008
Edgar Renteria's agent noted that he would not finalize a deal for his client before updating the Cardinals, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Agent Barry Meister said, "I have so much respect for them that I have and will keep them in the loop."

Our View:As previously stated, reports that Renteria signed with the Giants were false. Renteria enjoyed some of his best years with the Cardinals, and notched a career-best 100 RBI with the club in 2003.
November 24, 2008
Edgar Renteria has not been signed by the Giants, although the two sides have been talking, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Our View:Not many Type A free agents - such as Renteria - will be signed before December 1 because clubs don't know who will be offered salary arbitration yet, and it could cost them a high draft pick.
November 24, 2008
The Giants have signed Edgar Renteria to a two-year, $18 million deal, according to Sweeny Murti of WFAN.

Our View:We'll provide more details as they come available. If this report is accurate, the Tigers will receive the Giants' second-round pick.
November 21, 2008
Edgar Renteria's rep (Leff Lane) and the Giants have exchanged contract proposals, according to MLB.com. Lane said, "We're actively negotiating, no doubt about it."

Our View:There are around six MLB clubs interested in acquiring Renteria. He would be a solid replacement for 41-year-old shortstop Omar Vizquel, who the Giants are likely going to let walk. His defense is on the decline, but his offensive numbers could benefit from a return to the NL.
November 16, 2008
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Cardinals will not pursue Edgar Renteria until the Tigers decide whether to offer the shortstop arbitration. The Tigers are unlikely to offer arbitration, but the Cardinals would lose their first-round pick if they sign Renteria before the mid-December arbitration deadline.

Our View:Renteria is still a good fit for the Cardinals, who are looking for more offense at the shortstop position than Cesar Izturis provided last season.
November 15, 2008
Edgar Renteria's agent (Barry Meister) has stated that the Giants would be a good fit for his client, according to MLB.com. Meister said, "Clearly St. Louis and San Francisco are two clubs where they seem to have a fit, and where I know Edgar would really have some interest. That's really where we are today. There haven't been any long discussions about it, but we've identified those two clubs as being among the clubs that would be a good fit."

Our View:Renteria would be a solid replacement for 41-year-old shortstop Omar Vizquel, who the Giants are likely going to let walk. His defense is on the decline, but his offensive numbers could benefit from a return to the NL.
November 14, 2008
Edgar Renteria's agent Barry Meister said that the Cardinals would be a natural fit for his client, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Renteria could benefit from playing in a lineup with Albert Pujols again, but still might not be a viable fantasy option this year.
November 13, 2008
If the Oakland A's cannot land shortstop Rafael Furcal, they will be interested in acquiring Edgar Renteria, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:Renteria had a disappointing year in 2008, and at age 33, his days of being a fantasy option in mixed leagues could be winding down, especially in a park like Oakland's, which is a noted pitcher's park.
November 3, 2008
The Cardinals may be interested in bringing back shortstop Edgar Renteria after the Tigers declined his 2009 option, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:The 33-year-old could benefit from a return to St. Louis, as he topped .300 twice over his six seasons with the club from 1999-2004.
November 2, 2008
The Baltimore Orioles could be looking to acquire free agent shortstop Edgar Renteria, according to Baseball Prospectus.

Our View:Renteria's option was declined by the Detroit Tigers last week. He had a down year this season, hitting .270 with 10 home runs and 55 RBI. He doesn't figure to be a solid fantasy option no matter where he winds up.
October 30, 2008
Edgar Renteria officially had his option declined on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Renteria will receive $3 million in a buyout of his $11 million option. Renteria only batted .270 for the Tigers, after hitting .332 the previous season with the Braves. Two of the worst years of his career came this season and in 2005 with Boston, both while playing in the AL.
September 29, 2008
MLB.com reports that the Tigers will not pick up Edgar Renteria's option for next season making him a free agent this winter.

Our View:Renteria would be well-served to go back to the NL. His two seasons in the AL, 2005 and 2008, have been arguably the two worst seasons of his 13-year career. In 2007, he hit .332 with Atlanta.
September 28, 2008
Edgar Renteria was forced out of Sunday's game before the fifth inning due to a left pectoral strain, according to the AP.

Our View:The injury is not considered serious, and he was replaced in the lineup by Ryan Raburn.
September 26, 2008
Edgar Renteria could have played his last game in a Tigers uniform, according to the Detroit Free Press. Renteria, dealing with an injured left pectoral muscle, will likely be unavailable this weekend, and the club is far from certain to pick up his $12 million option for 2009.

Our View:If the club chooses to decline the $12 million option, Renteria will be due a $3 million buyout. Given his average work on defense and at the plate (.270-10-54-68-6) it would be a complete shocker if the club picked up the option. A little advice for you Mr. Renteria - return to the NL where you have success and stay away from the AL that saps your effectiveness like kryptonite to Superman.
September 21, 2008
Edgar Renteria picked up three hits in four at-bats, including a double and a home run, though it was not enough as the Tigers fell to Cleveland, 10-5.

Our View:Renteria has been a disappointment to both the Tigers and fantasy owners, but maybe he can pick it up some at the end of the year.
September 16, 2008
The AP reports that manager Jim Leyland expects Edgar Renteria to be back in the lineup on Friday against the Cleveland Indians.

Our View:The shortstop has played just one day since September 9th due to a bruised chest. He has hit .298 since the All-Star break and should be able to produce down the stretch knowing that he is playing for a contract.
September 2, 2008
Edgar Renteria continues to hit for the Tigers, and went 3-for-4 with a stolen base in the team's 5-4 loss to the Angels.

Our View:Renteria did his part, and after hitting .294 in August, he started off well in September. A lot more was expected out of him by everyone this season, and getting his average to .270 is a good way to start the final month.
August 25, 2008
Edgar Renteria continued hitting well and went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI in the Tigers 4-3 loss to Cleveland.

Our View:Renteria raised his August batting average over .300, and though he has had a disappointing year, he could salvage some of it if he stays hot and ends the year with an average somewhere around .270 - .275.
August 17, 2008
The Orioles and Tigers shared a grand total of 37 hits on the day, but the score fails to indicate a competitive battle as the O's picked up the 16-8 win. For the Tigers, shortstop Edgar Renteria was the top fantasy man of the day, going 4-for-5 void of an extra-base hit but enhanced with his fourth stolen base of the season, adding three runs scored along the way.

Our View:Renteria is hitting just .271 on the season but has been on fire of late, going 18-for-51 through August with hits in nine of his last ten games.
July 22, 2008
Detroit manager Jim Leyland has acknowledged concerns about the health of shortstop Edgar Renteria , though he remains open to adjust to the events yet to come, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Renteria suffered a mild hamstring strain on July 9 and sat out for a few games before the All-Star break. In the first two games after the break, he went 3-for-7, but has gone 0-for-8 over the last two games. Leyland said he wouldn't hesitate to use shortstop Ramon Santiago if he didn't think Renteria was healthy enough.
July 12, 2008
Edgar Renteria's strained hamstring is still sore, and manager Jim Leyland indicated he will be shut down through the All-Star break, according to MLive.com.

Our View:Hopefully he will benefit from the time off, and raise his .254 average in the second half.
July 11, 2008
Edgar Renteria is not in tonight's starting lineup. He is nursing a sore hammy.

Our View:Renteria remains day-to-day and Jim Leyland remains confident he will play this weekend.
July 11, 2008
As was previously reported, Edgar Renteria's hamstring injury is not believed to be serious and he could return to the Tigers' lineup tonight, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View:Manager Jim Leyland believes he will be fine, but you may want to leave him on the bench if you have a better option at the position. He only has two hits over his last six outings, and hasn't registered multiple hits in his last eight outings.
July 10, 2008
Edgar Renteria was not in the starting lineup for the Detroit Tigers today after suffering a mild hamstring injury on Wednesday, according to Tigers.com. The injury is not thought to be serious and Renteria could be back in the lineup tomorrow.

Our View:Renteria is not having the season fantasy owners had hoped for, with a .254 average and .301 on-base percentage.
July 9, 2008
Edgar Renteria left Wednesday night's game against the Indians with a mild left hamstring strain. Renteria pulled up after crossing first base and was replaced by Placido Polanco who came into play second base and Roman Santiago moved from second base to shortstop.

Our View:More on Renteria when the information becomes available.
July 9, 2008
Edgar Renteria hit a run scoring single in the bottom of the sixth inning on Wednesday night. The RBI was his first since June 15th.

Our View:Renteria started the season on fire, but his home (.307) and road (.208) splits and his lack of production the last month have turned him from pleasant surprise to fantasy reserve.
July 9, 2008
Edgar Renteria headed into Tuesday's game hitting .307 at Comerica Park, but only .208 on the road, according to the Detroit News.

Our View:The Tigers feel they've spotted a flaw that will help him hit more consistently.
July 4, 2008
Edgar Renteria will return to the Tigers lineup today against the Seattle Mariners after getting the day off yesterday, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View:Renteria will be back at shortstop today to face Erik Bedard. Renteria is 2-for-4 for his career off the left-hander.
June 14, 2008
Edgar Renteria did not play on Friday due to a sore rib cage, the Detroit News reports. Michael Hollimon started in his place.

Our View:The reports doesn't suggest a timeframe for Renteria's return, which we take to mean that the injury is not serious.
June 7, 2008
Edgar Renteria hit a grand slam on Saturday amidst a three hit outing against the Indians.

Our View:Renteria has 29 RBI, but other than that production, the majority of his work this season has been completely below what the Tigers had hoped for. One look at his .271 average, a year after he hit .332, confirms that.
May 20, 2008
Edgar Renteria hit one of Detroit's four home runs and matched his career high with five RBI in the Tigers' 12-8 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday.

Our View:Renteria now has four home runs on the season to go along with his 23 RBI and 20 runs.
April 22, 2008
Edgar Renteria went 4-for-4 with a double, two runs, and an RBI against the Rangers on Tuesday. He is batting .333 on the season and .379 when he hits seventh.

Our View:Renteria and Carlos Guillen are easily the Tigers two most consistent hitters right now. Edgar will hopefully have a lot more RBI chances once Magglio Ordonez and Miguel Cabrera find their grooves.
April 21, 2008
Edgar Renteria hit another home run during Monday's win over the Blue Jays. The Tigers shortstop was 2-for-4 with two runs scored with an RBI courtesy of his sixth inning solo-shot.

Our View:With Monday's production, Renteria raised his average to .300 and has 13 RBI, 10 runs scored and three home runs on the season.
April 18, 2008
Edgar Renteria hit his second home run of the season on Friday night as he had two hits, three RBI and a run scored for the Tigers.

Our View:With this outing Renteria's batting average inched over .300, and his 12 RBI are a solid total for a hitter in the bottom third of the order.
April 16, 2008
Edgar Renteria had a huge outing on Wednesday as he had three hits, including his first home run, on his way to five RBI for the Tigers.

Our View:Renteria bumped his average to .300 on the night with this big outing, and he should continue to be one of the better hitting shortstops in the AL in 2008.
April 12, 2008
Edgar Renteria ended Gavin Floyd's bid at a no hitter today, as he smashed a single in the eighth inning. The White Sox still lead the game 1-0, and setup man Scott Linebrink has replaced Floyd.

Our View:Renteria was not the likely candidate to break it up, as he is only hitting .238 so far this season.
April 9, 2008
Edgar Renteria got the revenge he desired against his old Boston mates, leading the Tigers to a 7-2 win over the Red Sox. Renteria went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, two RBIs, and two runs scored, adding a walk to the mix in one of the best nights he’s enjoyed in recent memory. Renteria needed a lift and used this outing to raise his batting average to .265.
April 2, 2008
Edgar Renteria went 3-for-4 against Kansas City on Wednesday, but didn't do much damage as the Tigers were blanked 4-0. He was the only Tiger to get a hit today.
March 25, 2008
With Curtis Granderson (hand) out for at least three weeks, the team will use shortstop Edgar Renteria at the top of the order. Renteria is a prototypical lead off hitter, this according to the Detroit News. "I'm thinking Renteria is the logical choice right now," Leyland said before the game, during which Renteria was 1-for-4. "I don't like to do it. I like him down a little bit more. "It's just the way it is." Leyland likely will not use Renteria exclusively in the No. 1 spot. Pudge Rodriguez could lead off against some left-handed pitchers, Leyland suggested. Renteria rarely strikes out, he's a terrific bad ball hitter, his career batting average of .291 and on-base percentage of .349 fits, and as a veteran he won't feel the need to press in April.
