Newsbreakers
October 16, 2008
J.D. Drew hit a double in the bottom of the ninth inning to drive in the winning run for the Red Sox, as they beat the Rays 8-7 in Game 5 of the ALCS. The Red Sox were losing 7-0 in the seventh inning when they broke out with four runs.

Our View:Drew also hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning, and was the biggest hero in a night that saw many for Boston.

J.D. Drew will bat leadoff in Game 4 of the ALCS because Jacoby Ellsbury is being benched, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Drew typically bats fifth in Boston's lineup. He was 5-for-29 (.172) in the leadoff position this season and he only has four stolen bases. This looks like a desperation move on the part of Terry Francona.
October 12, 2008
J.D. Drew was held out of Saturday's Game 2 of the ALCS against the Rays, and manager Terry Francona said the decision was not injury-related, according to the Houston Chronicle. Drew was hit in the right shoulder by a pitch from hard-throwing Tampa Bay reliever Grant Balfour in the eighth inning of Game 1, but Francona said, "He’s not in the lineup, and that’s not because he got hit. We’re putting Coco in center more because of Scott Kazmir. We want Ellsbury to stay in the leadoff spot."

Our View:Drew hit a game-winning home run off closer Francisco Rodriguez in Game 2 of the ALDS against the Angels, and there is a chance he will make a solid impact at some point during the ALCS.
October 5, 2008
J.D. Drew will not play in Game 3 against the Angels on Sunday night because of his sore back, according to the Seattle Post Intelligencer. "J.D. is physically doing pretty well," Boston manager Terry Francona said. "I know normally you get to this time of year and you send eight or nine guys out there and just stay with it. I don't know that, the way we're built right now, that's the best way to do it."

Our View:Drew hit the big game winning home run off of Francisco Rodriguez in Game 2, but he played in only two of the Red Sox last 38 regular season games because of his ailing back. Hopefully he will be back in the lineup for the Red Sox next playoff game.
October 4, 2008
J.D. Drew's ninth inning, two-run blast off of Francisco Rodriguez gave the Red Sox a 7-5 victory which held up for the final score in Friday's Game 2 of the ALDS in Anaheim. He finished the night 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Our View:Drew is clearly not feeling any ill effects of the back injury that sidelined him up until the playoffs (he had just four at-bats in the final six weeks of the season). He was the difference tonight at the plate and he also contributed with some nice catches in the field.
