The Red Sox are believed to be serious contenders in the hunt to sign A.J. Burnett, according to the Hot Stove Blog on MLB.com.

Our View:Boston reportedly raised their involvement in Burnett within the last 36 hours and are now fully engaged. This has turned into an AL East bidding war, as the Jays, Yankees, and Orioles are also interested in the hurler.

Other than trying to re-sign hurler A.J. Burnett, GM J.P. Ricciardi indicated that the Jays are going to be idle in free agency, according to MLB.com. Ricciardi said, "We're still going to keep listening and seeing what's available to us. But right now, I don't see us getting involved with anybody. Something is going to have to really make sense for us and the best way would be via trade."

Our View:Ricciardi denied the rumors that the Jays were targeting shortstop Rafael Furcal, outfielder Milton Bradley, and first baseman Jason Giambi. Sitting still will not help the Jays contend in the dominant AL East next season.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports indicates that the Jays' four-year offer to A.J. Burnett for $54 million is inaccurate. The Jays are waiting and are yet to make a proposal.

Our View:The Jays will have to battle the AL East rival Yankees and Red Sox to retain their ace hurler.

The Boston Red Sox have apparently thrown their hats into the ring in what could become a three-way battle between AL East rivals to land free-agent right hander A.J. Burnett, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:The Yankees, Red Sox and Blue Jays are just a few of the teams that are in the running for Burnett. He went 18-10 for Toronto in 2008 and an ERA of 4.07.
