Newsbreakers
September 6, 2008
Fernando Rodney picked up his ninth save of the season with a wild ninth inning on Saturday. He loaded the bases before getting Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau out to end the game.

Our View:Rodney has not been a reliable closer for the Tigers but he was able to get it done on Saturday. His ERA is down to 4.42. On the road he is 0-3 with a 7.02 ERA.
September 2, 2008
Fernando Rodney gave up a run in the top of the ninth inning that allowed the Angels to beat the Tigers 5-4. As you might expect, the inning involved two walks.

Our View:Rodney's control continues to be awful, and if he could manage better accuracy on his pitches, he could be dominant. But fantasy owners will have to see that to believe it.
August 22, 2008
Fernando Rodney made the ninth inning an exasperating one for Tigers fans one again, giving up two runs on three hits but ultimately getting his sixth save of the year in Detroit's 4-3 win over the Royals.

Our View:Rodney struck two batters out, but he also walked a hitter, and his grip on the role as closer has to be very loose.
August 22, 2008
The Detroit Free Press believes Fernando Rodney could be the Tigers' best option to close games in 2009. The Tigers' coaching staff made a few adjustments to his delivery. They had him quit turning so much in his windup when he threw his fastball. And they got him to stay more balanced over the rubber during his delivery. The changes have had favorable results and has verified to the team that he can be a full-time closer.

Our View:Barring a collapse down the stretch, Rodney looks to be a top candidate to be the Tigers' closer next season, assuming they don't add a free agent, such as Francisco Rodriguez.
August 18, 2008
Fernando Rodney picked up the save for the Tigers Monday, pitching 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief while striking out two batters.

Our View:Rodney has been terrific recently, picking up four saves while tossing nine scoreless innings with 13 strikeouts.
