Newsbreakers
December 18, 2008
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that the Twins are still exploring options at shortstop, despite recently re-signing Nick Punto.

Our View:Should the roster stay as is, Punto would likely be the opening day starter at the position. He hit .284 last season and is a career .252 hitter. H e has more value on the defensive end.
December 11, 2008
Nick Punto has signed a two-year deal with a club option for 2011 to remain with the Twins, according to the Sports Network. GM Bill Smith said, "Nick has been an important part of the Twins success for the past five years. He provides great defense up the middle and brings leadership and energy to our lineup."

Our View:He had other suitors, like the Phillies, but opted for Minnesota as he looks to be the starting shortstop with Adam Everett headed to Detroit.
December 8, 2008
Nick Punto is on the Tigers' radar, according to MLive.com.

Our View:The Tigers are looking for an affordable upgrade at shortstop, and Punto is on their list of targets, though they are believed to prefer Adam Everett.
December 8, 2008
Nick Punto is on the Diamondbacks' radar as an option at second base, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View:The team still likes Ramon Vazquez, but he wants two guaranteed years, rather than one with an option. Punto would be replacing Orlando Hudson, who is expected to depart in free agency.
December 8, 2008
The Star Tribune reports that Nick Punto is at the Winter Meetings in Vegas and will meet with interested clubs, including the Twins. He admitted it would be tough for him to leave the team.

Our View:The Twins have some interest in bringing him back. He hit .284/.344/.382 with 15 stolen bases. He does not hit for power or drive in runs, so his fantasy usefulness is limited.
