Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports suggests that the Indians could be interested in pursuing Mark Grudzielanek or Craig Counsell.

Our View:The Indians would need to decide if either of the aforementioned players would be an upgrade over Josh Barfield, Jamie Carroll and Luis Valbuena, who are all competing at second base. The club could move Asdrubal Cabrera to shortstop and Jhonny Peralta to third.
December 8, 2008
The Kansas City Star reports that two NL West teams, the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks, are interested in free agent Mark Grudzielanek.

Our View:Grudzielanek is a solid hitter who could be able to do some things for fantasy owners outside of mixed leagues.
December 8, 2008
The Kansas City Star reports that Mark Grudzielanek has declined the Royals' offer of arbitration.

Our View:The veteran second baseman hit .299 in 86 games last season. He had previously indicated he was likely to decline the offer in hopes of signing with a team “with a better (chance) to reach the World Series.”
December 1, 2008
On Monday, the Royals offered arbitration to Mark Grudzielanek only hours before the deadline, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View:Grudzielanek is still a good option at second base. In 2008 he dealt with some injuries but in 86 games he hit .299 with 24 RBI.
November 30, 2008
The Royals have to decide whether to offer Mark Grudzielanek salary arbitration, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View:The 14-year vet batted .299 with the Royals in 2008 prior to suffering a season-ending ankle injury on August 1. Grudzielanek is as a Type-B free agent, which would give the Royals a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds of next June’s new-player draft if another MLB team decides to sign him.
September 1, 2008
Royals second baseman Mark Grudzielanek suffered a torn deltoid ligament in his ankle, and though the MRI he recently took showed healing, it is not enough that he will be able to return this season, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View:Grudzielanek's season was solid though not spectacular. He likely helped fantasy owners in AL-only leagues with his .299 average, but offered little else.
August 23, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek will undergo an MRI next week to examine his injured right ankle, according to the KC Star. He said, "I’m going to have an MRI next week. It will be my fourth in four weeks. Once we see that, we will see how much healing its done and go from there."

Our View:He is unsure if he will be able to play again this season, and hasn’t done a lot since he tore his deltoid ligament in his right ankle when he collided with Ross Gload on a pop up. He is certain he will return next season, however.
August 6, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek is likely done for the year after revealing on Wednesday that he has a torn deltoid ligament on the left side of his right ankle, according to MLB.com. "I'd be pressed to get back this year," he said.

Our View:Esteban German will handle the second base duties while Grudzielanek is out. If he is in fact done, Grudz will end the year with a .299 batting average.
August 2, 2008
Royals second baseman Mark Grudzielanek has been placed on the 15-day disabled list after he sprained his right ankle, according to The Sports Network.

Our View:Grudzielanek doesn't offer much to mixed league fantasy players, but those in AL-only leagues will have to find a suitable replacement in the meantime.
August 1, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek had a collision with Ross Gload on Friday night that forced him to the bench, according to MLB.com. Grudzielanek left the game sporting a limp in his left leg. David DeJesus also left the game in the seventh inning though no reason was announced.

Our View:With Jose Guillen already ailing, Esteban German would figure to see additional time in the outfield if DeJesus needs to miss a couple of days. Of course, German could also end up at second base if Grudzielanek were to miss any time, or the team could turn to Tony Pena Jr. as well.
July 31, 2008
The Twins are now in the market for a second baseman with the injury to Alexi Casilla, and Mark Grudzielanek's name has come up, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View:The Dodgers are also in the mix for Grudzielanek, though it's not clear where he would play in LA.
July 26, 2008
Royals second baseman Mark Grudzielanek got three hits, going 3-for-5 with three doubles, and stopped an 0-for-9 streak.

Our View:Grudzielanek kept his batting average about .300, and could be an asset in AL-only leagues, despite his lack of power.
July 13, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek got hit number 2,000 on Saturday in the Royals 5-4 victory over Seattle, according to the Kansas City Star. He was treated with champagne, a cake and other things after the game, the paper said.

Our View:Grudzielanek has been around a long time, and this achievement helps to recognize just how solid a player he has been. He has decent fantasy value in deeper AL-only leagues with his .313 average, but his lack of home runs and RBI don't make him viable in mixed leagues.
July 6, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek is just five hits away from 2,000, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View:He would be the 251st player to reach the milestone. He is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak.
July 4, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 11-2 loss to the Rays. The Royals only mustered four hits in the game.

Our View:Grudzielanek extended his hitting streak to six games, and is hitting .461 (12-for-26) over the span.
July 3, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek went 4-for-5 helping the Kansas City Royals defeat the Baltimore Orioles 10-7 on Thursday night. Grudz drove in and scored a run in the win. This is the second four-hit performance for the Royals second baseman in the last week. On June 29, Gruzielanek went 4-for-5 against the Cardinals.

Our View:As bad as this Royals team can be at times, they rarely lie down for their opponents. KC overcame a four-run deficit, and a two home run performance by Aubrey Huff, to earn a split of the four-game series against the O's. Grudz is a large part of the big-hearted team.
June 29, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs, and an RBI on Sunday. He pushed his average up to .308.

Our View:Grudzy has been around .300 for pretty much the whole season, but he doesn't bring much else to the table. He is basically just an emergency fill-in for fantasy owners who have middle infield injuries.
June 23, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek was absent from Monday's lineup because of recurring back soreness, according to MLB.com. "Grud is sore in the lower back. I'm not sure if he's going to be available tomorrow or not. Hopefully he is," manager Trey Hillman said. "We'll see how his treatments go today but you won't see him on the field today."

Our View:Mike Aviles moved over to second for the Royals Monday, while Tony Pena played short.
June 11, 2008
Kansas suffered the slings of the Texas offense tonight, falling 11-5 in a game that carried plenty of hits, not nearly enough pitching, and more than a few runs scored. For the Royals, second baseman Mark Grudzielanek was the weapon of choice, going 2-for-5 at the plate with his 14th double and second home runs of the season, totaling four RBIs on the night.

Our View:Grudzielanek is now hitting .293 on the season, getting on base safely in 10 of his last 12 games.
June 1, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek went 2-for-4 with an RBI on Saturday. He had missed the previous four games due to a sore back.

Our View:Grudzy opened and closed the month of May with an RBI and drove in zero runs from May 2-30. He doesn't bring anything to the table outside a decent batting average, and he has very little fantasy value.
May 28, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek was held out of the Royals' lineup Wednesday for the second straight day because of a back injury, according to MLB.com. "It's stiff," he said. "I saw a chiropractor today, and he loosened it up. ... It's subsiding a little bit."

Our View:Grudzielanek said he expects to be back in a day or two. Esteban German played for Mark on Tuesday and Alberto Callaspo played on Wednesday.
May 7, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek went 3-for-3 with two runs scored to push his batting average up to .302.

Our View:Mark owns a career .289 average and has posted at least a .294 average in each of the last five seasons, and though it is a hollow number, he still has a lot of value in AL Only leagues.
April 24, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek had an exam on his back which revealed that he has an irritated disk in his lower back, according to the Kansas City Star. “He’s got some discomfort,” manager Trey Hillman said. “A little rest, hopefully, will calm it down sooner rather than later."

Our View:Grudzielanek doesn't appear likely to hit the DL, but he might sit out a few days to make sure the injury doesn't become serious. Alberto Collaspo will likely fill in with his .348 average.
April 23, 2008
Kansas City 2B Mark Grudzielanek has been held out of the Royals' lineup this evening as the team faces the Cleveland Indians, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View:Grudzielanek is struggling with lower back pain, and while manager Trey Hillman states he wanted to play, the decision was made to give him a rest and push Alberto Collaspo into the job. The injury is not considered serious and will not keep Grudz out for a prolonged period of time.
April 9, 2008
Royals 2B Mark Grudzielanek continues to bring his bat to the plate, going 1-for-3 in the Royals 4-0 win over the Yankees. Grudzielanek also picked up one walk and scored a run, raising his batting average to .407 on the season.
April 1, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek underwent an X-Ray on his injured left hand, and it came back negative, according to MLB.com. He was struck on the hand by a Justin Verlander pitch in the fourth inning during action on Monday and Manager Hillman noted, "There was a little bit of swelling there." He also said, "It's great to have that kind of a guy on your team, a veteran that refuses to come out. He didn't even want to come out of the game when I took him out."
March 31, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek started at 2B on opening day against Detroit, and helped lead his club to a 5-4 win as he went 3-for-4 with three RBI. He has been nursing a sore back, but it didn't slow him down today.
March 30, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek will start at second base on Monday and hit second in the lineup, this according to the Kansas City Star. The Royals veteran second baseman has been nursing a sore back.
March 18, 2008
Royals manager Trey Hillman said Tuesday that he expects Mark Grudzielanek to be ready for exhibition action on Friday, according to MLB.com. Grud's been sidelined by a sore back, but he should be ready for opening day, barring a setback.
March 16, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek rejoined the Royals Friday after heading to Kansas City for testing on his sore back, which was dubbed a lower-back strain, according to the KC Star. Although the ailment is not believed to be serious, it's not clear when he'll return to action.
March 14, 2008
Mark Grudzielanek returned to Kansas City on Thursday to undergo what the Royals dubbed as precautionary tests to determine the cause of tightness in his lower back, according to the KC Star. "I’m not really concerned," manager Trey Hillman said. "He’s had this before. If this was the regular season, it wouldn’t be a (disabled-list) situation. But rather than be aggressive with it, because it’s March 13, we decided to send him back to see Dr. Joyce because Dr. Joyce has always evaluated him in the past." He should rejoin the team Saturday, but hopefully results of the testing will be released on Friday. Grud's 37 years old and missed action last year while recovering from two knee surgeries, so this is something to keep an eye on.
March 2, 2008
Royals manager Trey Hillman said that Mark Grudzielanek likely will make his spring exhibition debut on Friday, according to MLB.com. Grudzielanek and other Royals veterans are being brought along slowly this spring so they don't get worn out. Jose Guillen might make his debut a week from today.
February 27, 2008
Manager Trey Hillman plans to let veterans Mark Grudzielanek and Jose Guillen dictate their readiness for games this spring. "Grud and Guillen probably won't play until the eighth or the ninth (of March)," Hillman said in the Kansas City Star. "They're veteran guys, and their bodies know how to get ready. I want them fresh for the start of the season." Grudzielanek thinks a rushed approach last spring contributed to the first of his two knee injuries. "The last two years," he said, "they made it a big thing to play the first (spring) game. What's the big deal about that? So I was out there last year on the first day, when I wasn't close to being ready." Grudzielanek doesn't offer much more than batting average from a fantasy standpoint, but he's a viable late-round target.
