ESPN.com reports that free-agent outfielder Rocco Baldelli and the Red Sox are nearing a deal.

Our View:Baldelli has managed just 155 games over the past three seasons. He will mostly be used as a fourth outfielder and serves as an insurance policy to the oft-injured J.D. Drew.

Our View:The Pirates covet a right-handed power bat for their outfield and feel Baldelli is worth the gamble as he received encouraging news regarding his mitochondrial disorder and the 27-year-old was notably a rising star prior to being hindered by the illness.

The St. Petersburg Times reports that the diagnosis of outfielder Rocco Baldelli's mitochondrial disorder has been "upgraded" to a less-severe form, and that an adjustment in his medication will let him play more often. "Knowing this is a treatable condition, I feel this is a very positive thing for me and my baseball career. With this less-severe diagnosis, I hope to be on the field on a much more regular basis," Baldelli said.

Our View:This is certainly a great thing for Baldelli, and teams may now look at him though a different prism in terms of playing time.
