Newsbreakers
December 16, 2008
Chase Utley is planning on being ready for opening day, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. He said, "Rehab is going well. Things are progressing very well. I don't expect any setbacks. I feel like I'll be ready to go, but it's something I have to be careful of. I want to make sure that we rehab this right. I don't want to have this problem again. But as of now, it's looking good."

Our View:Utley is favorably recovering from his November hip surgery, and trainer Scott Sheridan and GM Ruben Amaro Jr. share the elite second baseman's optimism that he can be ready for opening day. The club added that they have solid insurance with Eric Bruntlett and top prospect Jason Donald in the event that Utley is not ready though.

Phillies' GM Ruben Amaro Jr. noted that Chase Utley is recovering favorably from his November arthroscopic hip surgery, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. Amaro said, "We're real pleased with how things have progressed with Chase in the short time that he has started his rehab."

Our View:This is encouraging news regarding his chances to be ready to play in early April.
November 25, 2008
Chase Utley underwent arthroscopic hip surgery and is expected to miss four to six months while recovering, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:The elite second baseman is expected to be ready at or shortly after the start of the 2009 regular season.
November 20, 2008
Second baseman Chase Utley will need right hip surgery, and the operation will sideline him for four-to-six months, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Utley had problems with his hip throughout the 2008 season. "The procedure will be an arthroscopic evaluation with treatment of any labral or bony injury," the Phillies said in a statement. "The recovery will allow for the initiation of baseball activities between three and four months, however, the total recovery time may require four to six months."

Our View:The timeline means Utley is in danger of missing the start of the 2009 season and as much as the first two months. His progress will obviously be a top priority for us come February and March, as Chase is a first-round pick when healthy. Eric Bruntlett appears to currently be the best option to fill in at second while Utley is out, but the Phillies may pursue another backup.
November 13, 2008
Chase Utley won his third straight Silver Slugger, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Utley's first half was incredible as he hit 25 home runs and had 69 RBI before the All-Star break. Utley continues to be the cream of the crop when it comes to offensive second basemen, and should be an early draft pick in fantasy leagues for 2009.
