Newsbreakers
November 17, 2008
St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols has been named the 2008 National League MVP, according to MLB.com. Ryan Howard placed second with Ryan Braun coming in third and Manny Ramirez fourth.

Our View:Pujols dominated the league in every statistical category except home runs and RBI - the two numbers which remain the most archaic way to determine value. He also plays stellar defense, something none of the other top-four candidates can claim.
November 13, 2008
Albert Pujols won his fourth career Silver Slugger award on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Pujols had not won the award since 2004, but he continues to be the definition of consistency regardless. In all eight of his major league seasons, he's reached 30+ home runs, 100+ RBI, and an average of .300 or better. Barring a major injury, look for him to do the same again in 2009.
October 25, 2008
Albert Pujols won the Roberto Clemente Award, a prestigious honor that goes to a player deeply dedicated to community service, according to StLCardinals.com.

Our View:Pujols was chosen from a list of 30 players - one from each club. He does extensive work both in St. Louis and the Dominican Republic.
October 23, 2008
The St. Louis Cardinals are probably going to approach first baseman Albert Pujols about an extension to his contract sometime in the future, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Pujols' current deal runs through 2010 with an option for 2011, so nothing is imminent, but making sure arguably the best player in baseball is under contract for a long period of time is a good idea.
October 21, 2008
Albert Pujols has been named the NL Outstanding player by his peers, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He also won the award in 2003.

Our View:Pujols is one of the favorites for the NL MVP as he put up another year of ridiculous numbers, hitting .357 with 37 home runs, 116 RBI, and a career-high 104 walks. In his eight seasons, he has hit at least .300 with 30+ homers and 100+ RBI every year, being one of the most consistent hitters in the game. The NL MVP will be announced in mid-November.
