The Cubs' talks for Jake Peavy have ended due to budget limitations, but GM Jim Hendry said he is still interested in the ace hurler, according to the Hot Stove Blog on MLB.com.

Our View:Peavy will make $11 million in 2009 and is owed $63 million over the remainder of his contract. The Cubs state they would need to be very creative with their finances and get another club involved to swing a deal for Peavy.

Chicago Cubs have ended trade talks with the San Diego Padres for Jake Peavy, according to the Cubs official web site.

Our View:First the Braves and now it looks like the Cubs are out of the Peavy race. Since the Cubs signed Ryan Dempster that pretty much took them out of the race for the starter.
November 19, 2008
Jake Peavy's agent (Barry Axelrod) noted that there are probably six or eight more MLB clubs he and his client would be willing to look at as potential landing spots, according to the North County Times.

Our View:That is beyond Peavy's initial five preferred destinations. The Yankees could be among the new clubs being considered.
November 19, 2008
The Padres told the Yankees a trade for Jake Peavy is possible, even without Phil Hughes part of the package, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View:Peavy would have to waive his no-trade clause to play for New York. The other likely landing spots for Peavy remain the Cubs and Braves.
November 18, 2008
Jake Peavy could still land in Atlanta, according to MLB.com. Padres' GM Kevin Towers is considering revisiting a deal with the Braves and said, "You never know, we certainly made more progress with them. We were able to ID and agree upon a large part of the package."

Our View:Towers noted that the Padres must receive major league-ready pitching as part of a deal for Peavy. Towers feels that the Cubs, who he was solely focusing on regarding a deal for Peavy, may turn their attention away from pitching after re-signing Ryan Dempster today.
