The Cubs are still an unlikely destination for Jake Peavy according to Padres GM Kevin Towers, Yahoo Sports reports.

Our View:Peavy still needs to be moved by the Padres as they attempt to shed payroll and rebuild. If the club holds onto him to start the season, he could get hurt early in the year and drastically drop his trade value, which could devastate the Padres as a franchise.
December 23, 2008
The LA Times believes the Angels will make another attempt to land Jake Peavy from San Diego.

Our View:The Angels cannot afford to trade away young hurlers Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders or Jered Weaver, so their chances of reaching a deal for Peavy appear to be low.
December 18, 2008
The Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox have some interest in Jake Peavy but have not entertained trade talks to this point.

Our View:Boston was not among the places that Peavy had orignally requested, but he will have to expand that list if he hopes to leave San Diego. The Red Sox have a lot of young talented pitching that would surely interest the Padres.
December 16, 2008
Padres' CEO Sandy Alderson stated that Jake Peavy will likely be with San Diego on opening day, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Alderson said, "We said from the very beginning in connection with both of those possibilities that we would not make a trade unless it made baseball sense. We are no longer actively pursuing any trade for Jake, which is not to say someone won't approach us."

Our View:The Cubs and Braves were the top contenders to acquire Peavy, but neither club could offer a package that satisfied the Padres.
December 11, 2008
The Cubs will not be getting Jake Peavy, but the Angels may still have a shot, according to the Hot Stove Blog on MLB.com.

Our View:A deal is viewed as a longshot, but the Angels and Padres will continue to discuss players to see if they can agree to a favorable trade for both sides. The Padres are believed to be interested in infielder Brandon Wood and pitchers Nick Adenhart and Kevin Jepsen.
December 11, 2008
Padres' GM Kevin Towers stated that any proposed deal to send Jake Peavy to Chicago is now dead, according to the Hot Stove Blog on MLB.com. Towers said, "It doesn't look like anything is going to happen with the Cubs. GM Jim Hendry pulled out of the deal. He said he's got other things going on. I respect his position."

Our View:Towers noted that one option is pulling Peavy off the trading block and heading into the 2009 season with him at the front of the Padres' rotation. It is unclear why Hendry killed the deal.
December 10, 2008
MLB.com reports that Padres GM Kevin Towers has gone as far to tell reporters that he will know one way or the other by then if a Jake Peavy deal is to be had. "We had more dialog today than any other day," Towers said of his talks with Cubs GM Jim Hendry. "We'll know tomorrow [Thursday]. Before we check out of this hotel ... we'll know if we have a deal. This has been the entire focus of baseball ops [operations]."

Our View:There have been dozens of rumors surrounding this possible trade scenario and everyone would like to see these discussions conclude one way or another soon. Hopefully, tomorrow bears some fruit.
December 10, 2008
Jake Peavy is more interested in waiving his no-trade clause for the Yankees now that they have added CC Sabathia, according to signonsandiego.com. Still, he prefers to stay in the National League and New York isn't his first choice geographically.

Our View:With CC in NY, there would be another big arm to take some of the pressure off of Peavy. The Yankees and Padres had held some preliminary discussions earlier in the offseason and those could be revisited if talks with the Cubs collapse.
December 9, 2008
Padres GM Kevin Towers said on Tuesday that a deal to send Jake Peavy to the Cubs looks, "more likely today than it did yesterday", according to MLB.com.

Our View:This deal has been building steam all offseason, so it would probably be a bigger surprise now if it didn't happen.
December 9, 2008
Updating a previous report, Fox Sports is now saying that the Cubs maintain that they are "not even close" to a trade for Padres right-hander Jake Peavy. No deal for Peavy can be completed until the Cubs' new owner is identified; the new owner would need to approve the addition of the four years and $63 million remaining on the pitcher's contract.

Our View:The Cubs' would like to acquire a left-handed hitting outfielder first and foremost and would have to find a landing spot for Jason Marquis if they hoped to acquire Peavy.
December 9, 2008
The Chicago Tribune reports that the Jake Peavy-Cubs trade talks have reached a point where it will be a stunner if the Cubs don’t acquire Peavy by the end of the week. GM Kevin Towers told reporters on Monday that making a Peavy trade was his full focus at the winter meetings. He then went out and proved it by working to facilitate a potentially four-team trade that would send Mark DeRosa to Philadelphia and Felix Pie to Baltimore and bring back pitchers Garrett Olson, J.A. Happ and Sean Marshall for the Padres. The key for that deal to work is for the Phillies or Orioles to take Jason Marquis, with the Cubs agreeing to eat some of his salary.

Our View:Should Peavy join Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, Ted Lilly and Rich Harden in Chicago, we could see a 110-win team in the NL Central next season. However, finding someone to take on Marquis is no small task.
December 8, 2008
The Padres and Cubs are closing in on a deal that could involve four teams, with the others being the Phillies and Orioles, MLB.com reports.

Our View:The deal is not finalized by any means, so there are still details to be worked out, but things are certainly heating up.
December 8, 2008
The Phillies have emerged as a possible third team in the Jake Peavy-to-Chicago rumors, according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com.

Our View:The Cubs have become really the only team active in the Peavy rumors, but need another team to satisfy San Diego's demands for young talent.
December 7, 2008
Baseball Prospectus reports that the Rays are rumored to be the third team involved in talks regarding Jake Peavy. The Cubs need a second team to get involved with the Padres if they are to land the ace.

Our View:The rumor has veteran Brian Giles coming to the Rays from the Padres to play right field. The San Diego native has a no-trade clause but he may elect to play for a contender rather than the lowly Padres next season.
December 7, 2008
According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Padres chances of trading Jake Peavy to the Cubs has become slim.

Our View:For whatever reason, the deal just does not seem to be working out. It's entirely possible Peavy starts the year with San Diego if no trade partner can be found.
December 7, 2008
The Milwaukee Brewers may be a candidate to trade for San Diego's Jake Peavy, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Milwaukee will lose both Ben Sheets and CC Sabathia to free agency, and they need starting pitching, so they could be a match.
December 1, 2008
The Cubs remain in the hunt to land Padres' ace hurler Jake Peavy, according to MLBTradeRumors.com. Padres' GM Kevin Towers said, "I would say the Cubs are still in it. Lou Piniella said they’re not in it, but their general manager (Jim Hendry) says they’re in it. The Dodgers have bigger fish to fry. That’s not to say they might not circle back later in the winter. Our primary goal is to trade Peavy."

Our View:The Cubs hope to hold onto Mike Fontenot and Sean Marshall, which is part of the reason they are looking for a third team to involve in a trade for Peavy. A Cubs' source noted a two-year window for the club to win a title, and acquiring Peavy would be a major step in the right direction to achieve that goal.
November 29, 2008
The third team in the Cubs and Padres trade centered around Jake Peavy could be the Orioles, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:If this deal were to occur, the Orioles would receive Cubs' outfielder Felix Pie. Peavy's stats could suffer a bit as Wrigley Field is more of a hitters' park than the Padres' Petco Park, but would more than likely benefit from playing for a stronger team like the Cubs.
November 27, 2008
Padres GM Kevin Towers has reportedly identified a third team that would allow the Padres to send Jake Peavy to the Cubs, according to Yahoo Sports. The Cubs would likely send Josh Vitters to San Diego or the third team as their centerpiece in the deal. Towers said that he planned to speak with Cubs GM Jim Hendry after Thanksgiving. Towers declined to name the third team that could be involved in the deal.

Our View:The Cubs don't have the stud pitching prospect that the Padres have been looking for to replace Peavy once they deal him. The fact that Towers has found another team could mean that things move very quickly in the coming weeks. Peavy's motion also affects the free agent market for top-tier pitchers such as C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Derek Lowe. The Cubs have already re-signed Ryan Dempster, so adding Peavy would be more of a bonus acquisition than the team filling an actual need.
November 23, 2008
The Angels may pursue elite hurler Jake Peavy if Mark Teixeira turns down their upcoming proposal, according to MLB.com.

Our View:The Yankees are expected to aggressively pursue Teixeira if they only acquire one of CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, or Derek Lowe. The Angels will likely be a top contender again in 2009, but Peavy prefers the National League and it remains to be seen if he would waive his no-trade clause to join the Angels.
November 23, 2008
There is belief that the Dodgers may target Jake Peavy after Chad Billingsley broke his leg while slipping on ice, according to the LA Times.

Our View:This is purely speculation by the LA Times, and the Dodgers previously lost interest in pursuing Peavy when Padres' GM Kevin Towers was asking for a package including Billingsley.
November 20, 2008
The Cubs' talks for Jake Peavy have ended due to budget limitations, but GM Jim Hendry said he is still interested in the ace hurler, according to the Hot Stove Blog on MLB.com.

Our View:Peavy will make $11 million in 2009 and is owed $63 million over the remainder of his contract. The Cubs state they would need to be very creative with their finances and get another club involved to swing a deal for Peavy.
November 19, 2008
Chicago Cubs have ended trade talks with the San Diego Padres for Jake Peavy, according to the Cubs official web site.

Our View:First the Braves and now it looks like the Cubs are out of the Peavy race. Since the Cubs signed Ryan Dempster that pretty much took them out of the race for the starter.
November 19, 2008
Jake Peavy's agent (Barry Axelrod) noted that there are probably six or eight more MLB clubs he and his client would be willing to look at as potential landing spots, according to the North County Times.

Our View:That is beyond Peavy's initial five preferred destinations. The Yankees could be among the new clubs being considered.
November 19, 2008
The Padres told the Yankees a trade for Jake Peavy is possible, even without Phil Hughes part of the package, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View:Peavy would have to waive his no-trade clause to play for New York. The other likely landing spots for Peavy remain the Cubs and Braves.
November 18, 2008
Jake Peavy could still land in Atlanta, according to MLB.com. Padres' GM Kevin Towers is considering revisiting a deal with the Braves and said, "You never know, we certainly made more progress with them. We were able to ID and agree upon a large part of the package."

Our View:Towers noted that the Padres must receive major league-ready pitching as part of a deal for Peavy. Towers feels that the Cubs, who he was solely focusing on regarding a deal for Peavy, may turn their attention away from pitching after re-signing Ryan Dempster today.
November 17, 2008
The San Diego Tribune reports that Padres' GM Kevin Towers is currently only talking a Jake Peavy trade with the Chicago Cubs. “It's really come down to one club now – the Cubs,” he said. “It's going to take awhile."

Our View:Cubs starter Ryan Dempster is currently a free agent and should Peavy land in Chicago, Dempster's chances of returning figure to dwindle dramatically.
November 15, 2008
Braves' GM Frank Wren reiterated that Atlanta has ended their proposal for ace hurler Jake Peavy, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Wren said, "We reached the point where we made the decision that we just didn’t feel like there was a deal that we could feel comfortable with. Peavy is obviously a quality top-of-the-rotation pitcher. But our focus is still to build our organization internally with our young players, and we had to measure at what point we’d lose the ability to have a sustainable winning franchise going forward if we gave up too much talent. What we would be willing to do, and if that were not sufficient enough to get a deal done, that we were going to go ahead and move on to other pursuits and other opportunities."

Our View:The Padres' asking price was too steep and the Braves did not want to compromise their future by unloading several of their top prospects for one player. It is unknown exactly which players were asked for by San Diego, but pitcher Tommy Hanson and outfielder Jason Heyward were believed to be mentioned. The Braves were more willing to part with shortstop Yunel Escobar, pitchers Blaine Boyer and Charlie Morton, and minor-league outfielder Gorkys Hernandez.
November 15, 2008
Yankees' GM Brian Cashman discussed Jake Peavy with Padres' GM Kevin Towers earlier this month, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Towers told Cashman, "Right now, I need to stay focused with National League clubs. If I'm not able to get close with any of them, I'll circle back to you."

Our View:The Yankees remain interested in Peavy, despite literally targeting just about every major free agent pitcher on the market. Peavy has a no-trade clause and prefers the NL, but may be talked into playing for the Yankees, who look to be a top contender again after all of the smoke clears in free agency.
November 15, 2008
The Padres have noted that they may need to expand their search for a destination for ace hurler Jake Peavy, according to Sports Illustrated.

Our View:The Braves, Cubs, and Dodgers are the top three landing spots for Peavy as of now, but the Yankees and Angels are viewed as destinations Peavy may approve.
November 14, 2008
Jake Peavy won't be heading to Atlanta, according to Fox Sports. "We have moved on," Braves general manager Frank Wren told FOXSports.com on Friday. "We had our last discussion with San Diego yesterday and let them know that if the final names we were discussing wouldn't get it done, we would move on to other opportunities, other possibilities."

Our View:This leaves the Cubs as the best potential suitor for Peavy, and Chicago reportedly needs to find a third team in order to make the deal work.
November 13, 2008
The Padres haven't been able to find a suitable deal for Jake Peavy from his preferred list of teams, and may have to look elsewhere for a deal, according to the San Diego Tribune.

Our View:Peavy does have to approve any trade due to his full no-trade clause. He has expressed a preference for the National League and it is unlikely that he will change his mind with the leverage that he has over the situation.
November 13, 2008
Reports that Jake Peavy was on the verge of being traded to Atlanta are inaccurate, according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com.

Our View:Sooner or later, Peavy will get traded, and until then rumors from sources all over the place will fly.
November 13, 2008
The Chicago Cubs are not serious players for San Diego pitcher Jake Peavy, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. "I think it's only talk," said Cubs manager Lou Piniella.

Our View:It seems that the only serious pursuers of Peavy at this point are the Atlanta Braves, who are thought to be offering a four-player package.
November 13, 2008
CBS Sports is reporting that the Atlanta Braves are offering a four-player package for starter Jake Peavy. San Diego is expected to request that Peavy waive his no-trade clause very soon so the deal can be completed. Under terms of the deal discussed by the Braves and Padres, San Diego would receive shortstop Yunel Escobar, Single-A outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, one of two starting pitchers - Charlie Morton or Jo-Jo Reyes - and either reliever Blaine Boyer or one of two minor-league left-handers (one of which is believed to be Jeff Locke). Again, Peavy must ok the move, and some believe he would rather play in Chicago for the Cubs.

Our View:The Braves have been pressuring the Padres for an answer by Friday, when the free agent market opens, because they need at least two starters - and they want to know whether Peavy will be a Brave before they dive in. They are expected to pursue A.J. Burnett, Ryan Dempster and others. Peavy, 27, won the NL Cy Young award following the 2007 season in a unanimous vote. Though a strained elbow shelved him for part of 2008, he still compiled a 2.85 ERA in 27 starts, finishing 10-11 for a Padres club that lost 99 games. He has compiled ERAs of 2.88 or lower in four of the past five seasons.
November 11, 2008
Multiple major league sources have said that the Braves' offer for Jake Peavy is more significant than anything the Cubs could offer, according to MLB.com. Atlanta is reportedly willing to give up shortstop Yunel Escobar and one of their highly rated center field prospects, (Gorkys Hernandez or Jordan Shafer) as well as a young pitcher, which may or may not be either Charlie Morton or JoJo Reyes. The Padres have inquired about Jeff Locke, but it's unlikely the Braves would give him up in addition to the other players they've already agreed to include in any deal.

Our View:The Cubs are reportedly willing to give up Felix Pie, Sean Marshall and Ronny Cedeno, which, as the report indicates, doesn't contain nearly as much value. Peavy is surely to be dealt soon, and Atlanta appears to be the clear front runners to land him.
November 11, 2008
The Braves are reportedly frustrated with trade talks for Padres' ace hurler Jake Peavy, and are expected to pursue other options when free agency opens Friday, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View:If the Braves are out of the running for Peavy, then only two clubs remain in the race for him, being the Cubs and Dodgers.
November 9, 2008
Jake Peavy will be heading to one of three destinations, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Only the Braves, Cubs, and Dodgers remain in the race, which has eliminated the Cardinals, Astros, Yankees, and Angels.

Our View:The Braves still have the best available prospects to bring in Peavy, it's just a question of who they're actually willing to trade.
November 8, 2008
Pitcher Jake Peavy probably won't be going to the Houston Astros, owner Drayton McLane said. The team was put off by the list of players San Diego asked for, which McLane called a "wild combination," according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View:It's going to take a lot to get Peavy, and it's getting more difficult. The Cardinals and Astros have said they aren't in the market for him, and Peavy doesn't want to go to Atlanta if Yunel Escobar is one of the trade pieces.
November 7, 2008
Jake Peavy has decided that he would like Yunel Escobar to remain with the Braves if he is dealt to Atlanta, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Agent Barry Axelrod said, "One of the things we will want to look at some point is, 'Who are you giving up? How much are you weakening your team to make this deal? If Team X trades three starting pitchers and a starting shortstop to get Jake Peavy, that lessens their chance of being a successful team."

Our View:This will make it more difficult for Padres' GM Kevin Towers to deal Peavy, who wants to be traded but does not want his new team to be weakended in the deal.
November 7, 2008
The Padres have asked the Cubs for Jeff Samardzija as part of a potential deal for Jake Peavy, that may also include Felix Pie, Sean Marshall, and Ronny Cedeno, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:The Padres are still going to talk to the Braves, but are not offering top pitching prospect Tommy Hanson. The inclusion of Samardzija could motivate the Padres to complete a deal with Chicago. The Cubs are on Peavy's short list of preferred landing spots.
November 6, 2008
In his strongest statement yet, GM Kevin Towers basically flat out said that Jake Peavy has thrown his last pitch for the Padres, according to the Associated Press. "The train's kind of left the station," Towers said as he also commented that a deal should be worked out prior to the Winter Meetings on December 8th.

Our View:Peavy is likely to end up with the Cubs, Astros, Dodgers or Braves. The reports will continue to fly fast and furious until a deal is consummated as the rumor mill is working overdrive on this one.
November 6, 2008
Acquiring Jake Peavy is not on the Yankees' agenda, according to LoHud.com. But the ace hurler will most likely have a new home in 2009, as Peavy talks have progressed to a point where he has been told he’s going to be traded, it’s just a matter of when a deal is struck. GM Kevin Towers said, "That train has left the station."

Our View:Peavy's destination has been narrowed down to three clubs, all residing in the NL. The Padres are known to be dealing with the Braves and Cubs. The third team could be the Cardinals or Astros. The Yankees are not in the mix.
November 4, 2008
Jake Peavy's agent Barry Axelrod said that it's untrue that Peavy has agreed to waive his no-trade clause to go to either the Angels or Yankees, according to the New York Post.

Our View:It appears that Peavy really wants to stay in the NL, so it would be surprising to see him waive his no-trade protection to go to the AL.
November 4, 2008
Jake Peavy will likely still be traded, but new scenarios may be needed to complete the deal, according to Fox Sports. A three-way trade involving the Cubs or Braves might be a solution.

Our View:The Padres are pretty set on getting four prospects. The Braves seem to be equally set on not giving up that many players for Peavy which means that another team getting involved could be the only way this gets done. The Cubs, on the other hand, probably don't have the quality of prospects to get it done alone. We should know more after the GM meetings take place this week.
November 3, 2008
SI.com reports that Jake Peavy has added the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels to his list of teams that he would accept a trade to.

Our View:This should make things interesting as the National League teams had initially balked at the Padres' demands and Peavy's contract. Both AL teams figure to pull out more stops for the former Cy Young award winner.
November 3, 2008
Several MLB clubs have displayed interest for elite pitcher Jake Peavy, but Padres' GM Kevin Towers noted that he is focusing on three teams that Peavy has marked as preferred destinations, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:Towers has declined to identify the three teams, but the source believes they are the Cubs, Dodgers, and Braves.
October 31, 2008
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports believes the Padres will open negotiations with the Cubs and Dodgers next week regarding ace hurler Jake Peavy.

Our View:The Braves could not work out a deal, so the Cubs and Dodgers get the next chance to strike a deal for Peavy, both teams of which are on his preferred list of destinations. The Dodgers have a surplus of solid young talent, but pitcher Clayton Kershaw is considered untouchable.
October 29, 2008
FoxSports.com reports that trade talks between the Braves and Padres are on hold after San Diego requested five players in return. The final package could hinge on whether the Braves take back shortstop Khalil Greene as a replacement for Yunel Escobar, who likely would be included in the deal.

Our View:Escobar is an excellent prospect at shortstop and a Bobby Cox favorite. Peavy remains one of the best pitchers in the NL and it seems likely that he will be dealt before spring training.
October 26, 2008
Braves GM Frank Wren will not part with top pitching prospect Tommy Hanson in a trade for Jake Peavy, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:Most have considered the Braves the front-runners in the race to land Peavy, but that may no longer be the case if they are refusing to part with Hanson.
October 23, 2008
Jake Peavy does not appear to be going to the Cardinals, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. St. Louis GM John Mozeliak has all but dismissed the Cardinals as players for him, the Post reports.

Our View:The Cardinals want to see what they have with their own ace, Chris Carpenter, before moving forward. However, before they figure that out, many of the better available pitchers could be moved to new teams.
October 22, 2008
Following the World Series, Jake Peavy is expected to be dealt to the Atlanta Braves, according to the New York Post.

Our View:Peavy would be a valuable addition to any rotation, but the Braves could really use him with all of their holes. Tim Hudson, John Smoltz, and Tom Glavine all finished the season on the 60-day DL for Atlanta last year, and Mike Hampton was on the DL for most of the season as well. Hampton didn't pitch in the majors until late July.
October 22, 2008
The Colorado Rockies placed a call to the San Diego Padres to inquire about Padres' ace Jake Peavy , according to the Denver Post. However, they were told that the Rockies are not one of the teams that Peavy would waive his no trade clause to go to.

Our View:It appears that there are a slew of teams after the 2007 NL Cy Young award winner, which is hardly surprising. However, Peavy's insistence on being dealt to a NL club will make it more difficult to trade him.
October 19, 2008
The Red Sox will reportedly take a shot at acquiring Jake Peavy, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View:Peavy prefers to remain in the NL, but would consider playing for a top AL organization like Boston, who are currently chasing their third trip to the World Series over a five-year span. The Padres are believed to be interested in two pitchers and a position player in exchange for Peavy, and Boston has a surplus of strong young talent to interest the team.
October 19, 2008
The Brewers are reportedly going to push hard to land Padres' ace hurler Jake Peavy, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Milwaukee will likely lose CC Sabathia, and possibly the oft-injured Ben Sheets. Milwaukee makes sense, considering the Padres covet a shortstop and the Brewers would move J.J. Hardy in the right situation. Peavy has noted that he would prefer to pitch in the National League and can control things with his no-trade clause.
October 18, 2008
Jake Peavy has given the Padres a list of teams he would go to, and the Astros are high on that list, but a trade to Houston is highly doubtful because the team simply doesn't have the prospects to acquire him, according to Astros.com.

Our View:The two teams that are the reported front-runners for the services of the Padres ace are the Dodgers and Braves.
October 17, 2008
The Padres and Atlanta Braves trade talks centering around Jake Peavy have started to gain some momentum, according to the Braves Official Website.

Our View:Peavy is from Alabama and would welcome a deal to the Braves, though we are still likely a long way away from seeing a resolution to any Peavy deal.
October 17, 2008
Jake Peavy will not be heading to the Angels, according to a report by Buster Olney of ESPN. Apparently Peavy has given the team a list of five teams he would accept a deal to: Atlanta, St. Louis, Chicago (Cubs), Dodgers and Astros.

Our View:Peavy has a no-trade clause so the Padres will have to move him to a team he deems acceptable, and apparently his previously stated desire to remain in the National League still pertains.
October 17, 2008
The Newark Star-Ledger reports that the Yankees and Padres have had preliminary discussions regarding ace Jake Peavy.

Our View:Several teams are interested in the 2007 NL Cy Young award winner. Any deal between New York and San Diego would almost certainly involve Phil Hughes and/or Ian Kennedy who fell below expectations this past season.
October 16, 2008
The Atlanta Braves are working on a trade to acquire Padres ace Jake Peavy, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The paper reports that discussions have included a minimum of three high-quality prospects.

Our View:Peavy is just 27 and has a contract that runs through 2012 with an option for 2013 (at $22 million). A move from San Diego's spacious Petco Park to pretty much anywhere could have a slight effect on Peavy's great numbers, but not enough for fantasy owners to downgrade him considerably.
October 16, 2008
Jake Peavy's agent said he recently gave Towers a list of teams to which Peavy might consent to being traded, according to the Los Angeles Times. On that list were the Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros and St. Louis Cardinals.

Our View:The Padres lost 99 games this season despite 173.2 innings and a 2.85 ERA from their ace. They are now in rebuilding mode and should be able to fetch a slew of top prospects for the right-hander who has a reasonable contract all the way through 2012.
October 14, 2008
The North County Times reports that Jake Peavy has been made available for trades. He is set to make $11 million next season and is signed through 2012. "This was a different year than last year," general manager Kevin Towers said of the shift in priorities, before noting the difficulty. "You're arguably talking about moving one of the top pitchers in the game. But it's not a 100-percent given."

Our View:The Padres lost 99 games this season despite 173.2 innings and a 2.85 ERA from their ace. Peavy will demand an extremely high price tag but expect a number of contenders to get involved. The best package of prospects will probably land the 27-year-old. He is 86-62 with a 3.25 ERA in 199 career starts.
October 7, 2008
The Atlanta Braves could make an effort to acquire Padres ace Jake Peavy in the offseason, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:Padres GM Kevin Towers recently said that there was not an untouchable in his organization, which has set off a frenzy of speculation from numerous teams.
October 5, 2008
The Boston Globe speculates that the Red Sox could trade for Jake Peavy this off-season if the Padres make him available.

Our View:Peavy, Daisuke, Lester and Beckett? The Red Sox would certainly have a dream team in that scenario, though Peavy's keeper owners have to hope against a move out of pitcher-friendly Petco.
September 30, 2008
The Padres ended the 2008 campaign with a disappointing 63-99 record, but manager Bud Black will be back in 2009, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:2009 will mark his third season with the team. They closed out this season with the third worst record in the majors.
September 25, 2008
Jake Peavy threw 105 pitches in just five innings on Thursday night in L.A. The Padres ace gave up three runs, four hits, and four walks while striking out just three. He left with a no-decision.

Our View:It would almost seem certain that Peavy is happy to see his 2008 come to a close. Despite a 2.85 ERA in 27 starts, he is just 9-11. He will be keeping a close eye on the Padres roster moves this winter.
September 22, 2008
Jake Peavy's next start has been pushed back from Tuesday to Thursday, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:He was scratched from his scheduled start Friday to attend to his wife for the birth of his son, and manager Bud Black believes he needs more time to prepare. Wade LeBlanc will start Tuesday and Shawn Estes will go Wednesday.
September 19, 2008
Jake Peavy was scratched from his Friday night start to be with his wife for the birth of his son.

Our View:Peavy has endured some tough luck this month and has not won since August 14th. If he ever gets solid run support, Peavy will return to the top of the fantasy pitching heap.
September 13, 2008
Jake Peavy gave up more than ten hits for the first time all season in Friday night's loss to the Giants. San Francisco successfully connected 11 times, including two home runs, to beat the ace 5-2.

Our View:Peavy might be losing a little motivation in the process of San Diego's pitiful season. He is now 9-11 and certainly is already looking ahead to 2009.
September 6, 2008
Jake Peavy suffered his tenth loss of the season on Saturday despite pitching well against a tough Brewers' lineup. He allowed just one run in seven innings. However, his control was a little off as he walked four.

Our View:It's been an incredibly unfortunate season for Peavy who carries a 9-10 record despite just a 2.63 ERA. He remains one of the best pitchers in the game, but has been cursed with a terrible offense.
August 31, 2008
Jake Peavy struck out 13 batters over eight shutout innings against the Rockies on Sunday. It was his highest single-game strikeout total of the year. Peavy held the Rockies to five hits and walked two. Unfortunately, he took a no-decision.

Our View:Peavy went 1-3 over six starts in August despite a 2.77 ERA. Nice support, huh? He remains a fantasy ace despite the efforts of his teammates.
August 25, 2008
Jake Peavy went six innings and surrendered two earned runs while striking out seven in the Padres 4-2 win over Arizona.

Our View:Even with his 9-9 record, Peavy has been a good addition to fantasy staffs, with an ERA under 3.00 and a solid WHIP under 1.20.
August 20, 2008
Jake Peavy saw his record drop to 9-9 as he threw a poor game, pitching five innings, allowing six runs on five hits and walking four in the Padres loss to Arizona.

Our View:Peavy has been tremendous this month, so chalk this one up to a bad night. His record is not a good indicator of how well he has pitched this season, as the Padres simply do not score enough runs for him.
August 14, 2008
Jake Peavy did not pitch poorly over his last two starts, but with the San Diego offense as porous as it is, he wound up taking a loss each time. He reversed that trend today, throwing seven innings of one run ball while striking out eight in the Padres 3-2 win over Milwaukee.

Our View:Peavy has had just one poor month back in May, but has been very good otherwise. With the offensively-challenged Padres backing him, wins will be tough to come by. Still, he does so much else for fantasy owners, that he can certainly be a valuable asset.
August 8, 2008
Jake Peavy allowed three runs over six innings to the Rockies, but the Padres failed to give him enough support as Peavy lost his eighth game of the season.

Our View:Uncharacteristically, Peavy walked five batters and struck out only three batters as he has dropped three of his last five starts. No reason to panic though as Peavy remains what he has been the past few years and that is an undeniable ace.
August 3, 2008
Jake Peavy only surrendered one earned run on five hits over seven innings in Saturday's 2-0 loss to the Giants at PETCO Park, with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Our View:He pitched great, but was handed a loss due to no run support from his team-mates. The Padres' ace holds a strong 2.59 ERA and has more strikeouts than innings pitched, but is now 8-7.
July 27, 2008
Jake Peavy struck out 10 batters in seven innings to pick up his eighth win of the season on Sunday. He allowed just one run and carries a ridiculously low ERA of 2.67.

Our View:What else can we say? He's an ace with poor run support. He now has more strikeouts than innings pitched. On a contender, Peavy would likely have 12 or so wins by now.
July 17, 2008
For the first time since July 9, 2003 Jake Peavy surrendered four home runs in a game. The Cardinals managed four solo shots off of him in seven innings.

Our View:They were the only runs he gave up on Thursday, and he struck out seven. Peavy should return to his Cy Young-like form by his next start.
July 11, 2008
Jake Peavy threw seven shutout innings on Friday against the run-thirsty Atlanta Braves. He allowed four hits and struck out seven.

Our View:Peavy's ERA is down to a ridiculous 2.47 after not allowing a run in the past 14 innings.
July 5, 2008
Jake Peavy held the D'backs scoreless for seven innings on his way to win number six for the Padres. Peavy allowed just five base runners (three hits, two walks), while striking out six Diamondbacks.

Our View:Peavy has 26 K in 29 innings since coming back from the DL as his ERA is back down to 2.67. He appears to be all the way back from the arm issues that hampered him, though his somewhat violent delivery still leaves him as someone to monitor closely.
June 29, 2008
Jake Peavy slipped to 5-5 after a tough outing against the Mariners on Sunday. The ace served up 10 hits over six innings, but he held the opposition to three runs. Peavy walked one and struck out six.

Our View:Peavy is going through a relatively tough stretch. We stress the "relatively" part because even the bad times for this stud would be good for most hurlers. We're not concerned.
June 25, 2008
Jake Peavy was solid once again on Tuesday but did not factor into the decision. He allowed one run on five hits with six strikeouts in six innings.

Our View:Peavy is spectacular at PetCo Park. He has a 1.29 ERA at home, the best in the majors.
June 18, 2008
Jake Peavy allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits, walked two and struck out four in a losing effort against the Yankees on Wednesday night. The conditions were wet and the fielders were having problems with batted balls. The Padres made two errors in the game, one effected the pitch count and the pace of their ace.

Our View:Peavy is still on a pitch count and could only last four innings after throwing 93 pitches.
June 13, 2008
Jake Peavy didn't complain of any soreness after needing only 72 pitches to get through his six innings against the Dodgers on Thursday night, this according to the team website. The Cy Young winner struck out four and didn't walk a batter in his first start since May 14.

Our View: Peavy (5-3, 2.64) will make his next start on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium, meaning he will get the benefit of an extra day of rest with the Padres' off-day Monday.
June 12, 2008
Jake Peavy had a triumphant first effort back as he he hurled six shutout innings against the Dodgers, according to the Associated Press. “I’ve got a long way to go to be where I want to be,” said Peavy. “But I was able to make some good pitches when I had to. I wasn’t asked to grind it out because of the score. I was able to pitch to contact.”

Our View:Peavy needed just 72 pitches while allowing three hits and not walking a single batter. Feel free to activate him if you were waiting to see how he responded to his injured arm. He looked great today.
June 12, 2008
Jake Peavy has officially been activated from the DL, according to the AP. The team optioned lefty Joe Thatcher to Triple-A Portland as an adjoining move.

Our View:He has recovered from a strained right elbow, and will return to the rotation today against the Dodgers. He will be on a pitch count of 90, but should be penciled back into your fantasy lineups.
June 12, 2008
Jake Peavy will be on a soft pitch count of 90 when he returns from the DL today on Thursday, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Manager Bud Black said, "We've got to see how the game goes."

Our View:Peavy has recovered from a strained right elbow. The Padres' ace should be in your fantasy lineups, regardless of a pitch count.
June 10, 2008
San Diego RHP Jake Peavy will come off the disabled list to face the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:The team reports Peavy performed well in a four-inning simulated game on Saturday and has felt no pain or discomfort since, nursing a strained right elbow. His last start was on May 14th against the Chicago Cubs. But the club shut him down when a lingering pain in his elbow continued after that start. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 20, retroactive to May 15. The team has debated leaving him out of action until Friday to open their series at Cleveland, but the Padres are ready to get him on the mound and target Thursday for that return.
June 7, 2008
Jake Peavy threw a simulated game on Saturday and the hope is that he will be able to take the hill for the Padres by the middle of the coming week, according to MLB.com. "It wasn't crisp by any means but I came out of it healthy," Peavy said. "Just have to get better than that before I pitch in a Major League baseball game, I know that."

Our View:Peavy will throw on Monday in a side session, and if that goes well he will likely start on Thursday against the Dodgers.
June 4, 2008
San Diego RHP Jake Peavy took a step towards returning to the mound today, completing a successful and challenging bullpen session, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View:The reigning Cy Young winner threw 45 pitches off the mound and has reported no pain or discomfort. He will be re-evaluated on Thursday, and if things go well, he will throw his scheduled rehab start in the minors or in a simulated game on Saturday.
June 1, 2008
Jake Peavy hopes to return to the rotation within the next two weeks. "That's realistic, absolutely," he informs the San Diego Union-Tribune. Peavy has been happy with his flat-ground throwing sessions. He is on the DL due to a strained right elbow.

Our View:That's a vague timeline, and we hope for better updates in the near future. In the meanwhile, fantasy owners looking at the week ahead can plan to be without their ace.
May 29, 2008
Jake Peavy could throw off a mound as early as Sunday if his flat ground throwing session on Friday goes favorably, according to MLB.com. Peavy is recovering from a right elbow strain, and said he is excited about the way his elbow feels after a second throwing session Wednesday. Manager Bud Black would ideally like to see Peavy throw a couple of bullpen sessions, possibly followed by a simulated game. But Black said Peavy might not have to go on a Minor League rehab assignment before returning to the Padres' starting rotation.

Our View:Peavy was placed on the DL on May 20, retroactive to May 15, and would be eligible to come off the DL on Friday. Peavy previously hoped to return by the weekend, but that was deemed as unrealistic.
May 28, 2008
Jake Peavy is hoping to return to the Padres rotation this weekend, according to SportsTicker. The righty, who is on the DL with a strained right elbow, threw 40 pitches Tuesday in his first baseball-related action since being sidelined. "Everything felt normal, so that was good news," said Peavy. "Obviously, it's gone longer than we thought, but everything went well... Hopefully everything will go well and we can progress towards getting back out there."

Our View:The Padres have yet to set a timetable for Peavy's return, so it's not clear yet if the weekend is a legitimate possibility. He's eligible to come off the DL on Friday.
May 27, 2008
Jake Peavy threw 40 pitches on flat ground and took batting practice Tuesday in his first baseball-related action since his right elbow strain, according to MLB.com. "Everything felt normal, so that was good news," said Peavy. "Obviously, it's gone longer than we thought, but everything went well today, and we'll try again tomorrow and hopefully everything will go well and we can progress towards getting back out there." Peavy had an MRI Tuesday morning, and the results were positive. "The MRI looked good today, with no structural damage. Everything looked intact with tendons and ligaments." When asked when he might return to the mound, Peavy responded, "I don't know, maybe sometime this weekend. I hope we can climb up on the mound and have enough arm strength to get through that. And hopefully it won't take too much longer after that to get on the mound for real."

Our View:This is certainly positive news on Peavy, but he's obviously not out of the woods yet. We'll continue to track his recovery.
May 25, 2008
Jake Peavy will undergo a follow-up MRI on his sore right elbow on Tuesday, according to the North County Times. It was originally believed that Jake Peavy would resume playing catch on Saturday, but that plan was abandoned following a meeting with team doctors on Friday. Manager Bud Black noted that Peavy's elbow is improving, but doctors can't fully clear him. Black added, "There's still a little discomfort when he goes through a few of the stress tests." Peavy commented, "It's still tender. Everybody wants to get back out there, but you have to listen to your body."

Our View:Peavy won't perform any baseball activities until he's cleared, which could come after his follow-up MRI. Black said if Peavy doesn't begin throwing by this week, he will require a rehab assignment before returning.
May 20, 2008
As expected, the San Diego Padres placed Jake Peavy on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, one day after an MRI revealed he has a strained right elbow. According to the (TICKER), the move is retroactive to Thursday, May 15. The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner skipped his scheduled start Monday and will miss at least two more outings before he is eligible to be activated on May 30. To take Peavy’s spot on the roster, the Padres recalled lefthander Joe Thatcher from Class AAA Portland.

Our View:Peavy will undergo another MRI later this week to determine if the swelling has subsided.
May 19, 2008
Jake Peavy is likely headed to the DL, according to a report on the San Diego Tribune. Apparently Bud Black told reports that though the results of Peavy's MRI are still not in, the team will likely place him on the DL regardless.

Our View:Not at all surprising. If Peavy blows out his arm the Padres are toast, so look for them to be extremely careful with their ace no matter what the MRI says. Hopefully it won't be more than a couple of weeks.
May 18, 2008
The San Diego Padres report RHP Jake Peavy will miss his next scheduled start on Monday, hampered by soreness in his pitching elbow, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Peavy reports the discomfort has been there for some time but he failed to report to the team due to his desire to pitch through the pain. He has lost three of his last four decisions and lasted just four innings in his last outing against the Cubs on Wednesday. The team reports Peavy will undergo an MRI on Monday once the team returns to San Diego. LHP Will Ledezma is slated to fill the start on Monday against St. Louis.
May 14, 2008
San Diego ace Jake Peavy pitched well, but the Cubs still managed to score runs and handed Peavy his third loss of the season, winning 8-5. Peavy pitched just four innings, giving up four runs (all earned) on seven hits, walking just two with eight strikeouts.

Our View:Peavy now has just one win in his last six outings and his ERA is steadily on the rise.
May 10, 2008
Even with Cy Young winner Jake Peavy pitching, there is no margin for error, not with a San Diego offense that can't string more than two hits together over the course of nine innings. Garrett Atkins and Brad Hawpe hit consecutive bases-loaded singles off Peavy in the sixth inning Friday night and that was enough to give the Colorado Rockies a 3-2 lead, and eventually a 4-2 victory sending the Padres to their 18th loss in 22 games. The hard-throwing right-hander allowed three runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out six in six innings of work.

Our View:Peavy even accounted for half of San Diego's offense, scoring the Padres' first run after hitting a double in the third.
May 3, 2008
Jake Peavy earned his fourth win of the season on Saturday, as San Diego topped Florida 7-2. Peavy only allowed two runs on five hits over 5.2 innings, with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Our View:Peavy is now 4-2 with a 2.22 ERA over 48.2 innings, with 46 strikeouts. He has now evened his career mark against the Marlins to 4-4.
May 3, 2008
San Diego RHP Jake Peavy is searching to get back into the win column today as his Padres continue their three-game visit with the Florida Marlins.

Our View:Peavy started the season with three consecutive wins but has since failed to garner another, suffering two no-decisions followed by a loss in his next three starts. Peavy has posted an ERA of 2.57 during that time, but the reigning Cy Young award winner has seen his team fall short in efforts to support his cause with offense. Peavy have faced the Marlins seven times during his career, going 3-4 with a 3.15 ERA.
April 27, 2008
Jake Peavy gave up four hits over seven innings, losing at home for the first time in 10 starts since last July. Peavy had gone 6-0 with a 0.68 ERA in that span.

Our View:Peavy, whose ERA rose to 2.09, allowed more earned runs Sunday than he had in his first three home starts this season combined (one earned run in 24 innings).
April 22, 2008
San Diego ace Jake Peavy suffered through his worst outing of the season thus far as the Padres were taken down 7-11 by the HOuston Astros. Peavy threw 112 pitches over six innings to surrender four runs (all earned) on seven hits, including two home runs surrendered.

Our View:The four runs allowed match the combined total Peavy has let go over his first four starts.
April 22, 2008
Jake Peavy looks to continue his dominance in 2008 when he takes the mound tonight against Houston, according to MLB.com. He is currently 3-0 with a stellar 1.20 ERA, and 0.90 WHIP over 30 innings, with 27 strikeouts. He notably threw seven shutout innings against Houston on opening day.

Our View:He has lived up to high expectations for those who took him in the first round of the fantasy draft, and he looks to have another strong outing tonight.
April 18, 2008
Jake Peavy was able to only work roughly one-third of Thursday's game against the Rockies. The ace tossed eight scoreless innings in what turned out to be a 22-inning battle. Peavy allowed only four hits, walked three, and struck out 11.

Our View:Peavy is off to another brilliant start this year and was worth whatever you paid for him in fantasy drafts and auctions.
April 7, 2008
Jake Peavy has been accused of using pine tar during his Saturday win over the Dodgers. The LA Times reports that an image showing a dark substance on the thumb, forefinger and middle finger was taken from Fox's national broadcast on Saturday and appeared on the message board of a Dodgers fan site later that night next to one of Peavy's hands magnified. "Pine tar," Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt said. "Rosin's not that dark." Peavy, who threw a complete game and limited the Dodgers to two hits, denied that he cheated to get a better grip on the baseball. "It's just dirt," said Peavy as he looked at copies of the pictures. "I pick up dirt. I mean, come on. I mean, seriously. That's funny to me, seriously." Don't expect anything to come of this, except for an umpire making a trip to the mound when the Padres and Dodgers meet again.
April 5, 2008
Jake Peavy improved to 10-1 lifetime against the Dodgers as he allowed only two hits in a complete game victory on Saturday. Peavy needed 116 pitches to strike out eight batters while walking one and permitting just one walk. Can you believe that Peavy won the NL Cy Young award last season without a single complete game? In fact, Peavy didn't pitch into the ninth inning a single time last season.
April 1, 2008
Jake Peavy was in control as he threw seven scoreless innings with only three hits allowed, and four strikeouts and three walks. The Padres downed Houston 4-0 on Monday. This is why Peavy is taken in the first round in fantasy drafts.
March 26, 2008
Jake Peavy allowed four runs on four hits (one home run) over three innings of work against Texas on Wednesday, with one walk and five strikeouts. He most notably blasted a two run homer, but the Padres' still lost 12-7.
March 22, 2008
Jake Peavy will get one more start before he’s to throw the team's first pitch of the 2008 season, March 31 against the Houston Astros at Petco Park, this according to the San Diego Union Tribune. Peavy isn't happy with his command – fastballs that are missing the spot more than he would like. Ryan Braun hit a fat-ball for a three-run home run in the first inning on Friday, but according to Peavy that isn't concerning, just frustrating. Peavy told the paper that the “achy” shoulder was of “no concern whatsoever” but did renew his appreciation of the team's trainers. Spring is what it is.. exhibition play. Peavy should still be the first or second pitcher to come off the board in any fantasy format.
March 21, 2008
Jake Peavy once again looked mortal as he allowed four runs on three walks and six hits on Friday in 4.1 innings pitched. Peavy, who had five strikeouts on the day, hasn't looked anything like the Cy Young quality pitcher he actually is, but no one is in panic mode as he has used this spring to work on a changeup and locating his pitches while paying little attention to the results.
March 11, 2008
San Diego ace Jake Peavy said he was using today's Cactus League start to work on his fastball, according to the Associated Press. The results were not as hoped, giving up four runs in the 1st inning as the Padres lost to the Angels 4-8. Peavy worked three innings, giving up five hits with two walks and six strike outs. To be fair, Peavy didn't allow a hit over those last two innings, admitting he abandoned his desire to work on the fastball. "My pride took over," said Peavy.
March 6, 2008
Jake Peavy worked three innings on Thursday and picked up the win for the Padres over the Rockies. Peavy allowed four hits and two runs on the day as he also struck out four. Peavy looked sharp other than a HR allowed to Troy Tulowitzki, so consider him to be good to go as the best right handed hurler in the NL.
