The Star Tribune reports that Justin Morneau has been named Canada's male athlete of the year by The Canadian Press. "Any time you can beat out a hockey player in anything in Canada, it's an accomplishment," Morneau said. "It's pretty cool."

Our View:Morneau hit .300 with 129 RBI last season for the Twins. He beat out Sidney Crosby for the award.

Justin Morneau sent every Twins' employee (front office personnel, scouts, media relations, etc.) a scarf for Christmas along with a note that read, "Your hard work off the field made it easier for us on the field," according to the Star Tribune.

Our View:One of the approx. 350 employees stated that was the first time a player had done that. He also took four needy families to Target and reportedly gave each a $2,500 shopping spree.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Justin Morneau underwent laser eye surgery last month, aftre receiving a strong recommendation from Denard Span. Morneau has reported positive results.

Our View:As long as the surgery was a success, it seems clear that having optimum eyesight should only enhance a hitter's ability to make solid contact. Morneau has been one of the top RBI men in the league over the past three seasons, and should continue to be in 2009.

Justin Morneau covets another productive bat for the Twins' lineup, according to MLB.com. Morneau said, "I don't want to take anything away from the guys that are here now, but it would be nice to have another bat. If we can add one more bat, I think that would put us over the top."

Our View:The Twins are interested in adding Casey Blake for the hot corner, which would help to satify Morneau's wish. The club wants to work on improving their infield, and feel they have a solid surplus of outfielders.

Justin Morneau finished second in the balloting for the AL MVP award, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Morneau received seven first-place votes and finished with a total of 257 points. Dustin Pedroia of Boston claimed 317 points to finish first. Morneau was aiming for his second MVP award over the last three seasons, as he won the honor in 2006.
