Newsbreakers
December 26, 2008
The Rocky Mountain News reports that the New York Yankees may be interested in moving outfielder Hideki Matsui.

Our View:The Yankees have a number of corner outfield types, and are looking to thin out at that position.
November 23, 2008
Hideki Matsui is ahead of schedule in his recovery from knee surgery, but is not going to represent Japan in the World Baseball Classic, according to Newsday.

Our View:Japan will be disappointed to not have him play, but he is on pace to be ready for the start of spring training, and does not want to compromise that.
November 20, 2008
Hideki Matsui is ahead of schedule in his recovery from knee surgery and he is running in place, according to MLB.com. head trainer Gene Monahan noted that Matsui "looks great."

Our View:Matsui is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.
November 8, 2008
Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui may be headed to the Mariners in a three-way trade between those two clubs and the Rockies, in what would be a blockbuster also featuring Robinson Cano and Matt Holliday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Trades like this are often bandied about at the beginning of the Hot Stove season, so we'll believe it when it happens.
September 30, 2008
Hideki Matsui came to clean out his locker, and though he was seen limping due to surgery on his knee, he still believes he will be ready to rock for Spring Training 2009, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View:Matsui hit .294-9-45 this season in 337 AB, solid but underwhelming production, but a look at the OPS category tells a different story with a career worst .795 mark. In two of the last three seasons the once Ripken-like Matsui has failed to record 350 AB and he therefore enters 2009 as a huge question mark.
