The Phillies may be interested in the Padres' Scott Hairston as an option in left field, according to MLB.com.

Our View:He could be viewed as a decent alternative to replace Pat Burrell, if the Phillies are unable to reel in a higher-profile target. Hairston held a .312 OBP over 112 games in 2008, with 17 homers.

Scott Hairston has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a torn ligament in his left thumb, according to the AP. The team recalled pitcher Cla Meredith from Triple-A Portland as the corresponding move.

Our View:Jody Gerut could be set up for extended playing time in center field, but that will also depend on who the Padres add in September call-ups.

Scott Hairston may have sustained a broken thumb while attempting a diving catch in the outfield Wednesday, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. He said, "I thought I jammed the thumb on the dive, but an X-ray seems to show a chipped bone in the thumb."

Our View:He will have an MRI Thursday morning, which will decide if he is headed for the DL. Hairston is not optimistic the exam will have good results. Jody Gerut could be set up for extended playing time in center field, but that will also depend on who the Padres add in September call-ups.

Scott Hairston hit his eighth home run of July on Sunday against the Pirates. "Scott Hairston has been swinging a hot bat," Black said. "He's got that in his game."

Our View:That he does. His eight blasts have come in 17 games but he is still not an everyday outfielder in San Diego.

Scott Hairston continues to swing a hot stick. He went 2-for-3 with a homer, two runs, an RBI, and two walks in Monday's win over the Reds. Hairston is 19-for-41 with seven home runs in 13 games this July.

Our View:Hairston has always been a streaky hitter with good potential. He is in the midst of an obvious hot run. Pick him up at your own risk.
