The Arizona Diamondbacks have ace Brandon Webb under their control for two more seasons, but are already talking contract extension with him, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View:Webb picked up 22 victories and posted an ERA of 3.30 with a WHIP of 1.20 while striking out 183 hitters in 226.2 innings. With the starting pitching market still sparse, and high-dollar contracts going out to average hurlers, Arizona clearly wants to be ahead of the pack in retaining Webb at today's prices.

Brandon Webb is in the running for the NL Cy Young and on Saturday night it was another good start. Even though Webb didn't get the win he pitched seven innings surrendering four runs.

Our View:Webb finished his 2008 with 22 wins and an ERA of 3.24 and a WHIP of 1.20. The Cy Young looks like it is going to come down between Tim Lincecum and Webb.

Brandon Webb hurled seven innings of two run ball against the Cardinals to pick up his 22nd victory of the season. He walked two batters while permitting eight hits on the night.

Our View:For those Cy Young voters who look only at win totals, this effort might have sewn up the award for Webb. Over his last three outings Webb is 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP as he tries to convince the world that he deserves the award over Tim Lincecum.

Brandon Webb is hopeful that his 21 victories will be enough for him to pick up the 2008 NL Cy Young award, according to the Arizona Republic. "I would think that would be enough," he said. "But you never know."

Our View:Would someone please tell all the players, ex-players and those who vote for the award that wins are hardly a measure to depend on when it comes to award voting. Tim Linceucm, who has an ERA that is roughly three quarters of a run better to go along with a lower WHIP and 73 more K, has been the superior pitcher by nearly every measure other than wins. Sure he has "only 17", but the he has left five games this year with the lead only to see the bullpen blow it. Sorry Mr. Webb, but you just don't deserve the award.

It is possible that Arizona right-handers Brandon Webb and Dan Haren could skip the World Baseball Classic that is set to take place next spring, according to the Arizona Republic. "I've thrown a lot of innings this year, and I don't know if I want to be ready to be in a game situation at that point in the year," said Webb.

Our View:The Diamondbacks (and fantasy owners) will probably celebrate that decision quietly, because losing one of the game's best pitchers to an injury in an exhibition would obviously hamper their season greatly.
