Newsbreakers
September 9, 2008
Since taking over as the Braves closer Mike Gonzalez has not blown a save, well until tonight. Gonzalez gave up a ninth inning homer to Brad Hawpe.

Our View:Gonzalez has been pretty good in the closer role this year and you might consider him in NL only leagues or deep leagues.
September 6, 2008
Mike Gonzalez managed just one out while yielding three runs in the tenth inning against the Nationals on Saturday night. It was his second loss of the season.

Our View:Gonzalez has been anything but dominant but he remains the closer for the Braves which makes him a fantasy consideration in deep leagues.
September 4, 2008
Mike Gonzalez picked up his ninth save on Thursday night with a one inning, three strikeout performance against the Nationals. This was his 39th straight save conversion, the longest current streak in the majors.

Our View:Gonzalez has rebounded from his arm injury quite well with 27 K in 24 innings to go along with a 1.13 WHIP. A healthy season in 2009 will make a huge difference for a Braves club that struggled for half the year to find a closer.
September 1, 2008
Braves reliever Mike Gonzalez showed an uncharacteristic lack of control, walking three Marlins in the bottom of the ninth inning before giving up a sacrifice fly to John Baker, as the Braves lost to Florida, 4-3.

Our View:For the most part, Gonzalez has shown very good control, averaging less than three walks per nine innings this season. He remains the Braves closer, and fantasy owners should not lose confidence in him due to this hiccup.
July 25, 2008
Braves' closer Mike Gonzalez has a 2.70 ERA with 17 strike outs and no walks in 13.1 innings this year. The return of Rafael Soriano isn't expected to affect the pecking order in the Atlanta bullpen.

Our View:The only reason to own Soriano in traditional formats is just in case the Braves become sellers this week and find a taker for Gonzalez. Soriano would then take hold of the ninth inning role.
July 18, 2008
Mike Gonzalez earned his fourth save of the season in Atlanta's 7-6 win over Washington. Gonzalez made it interesting by allowing a run but managed to maintain the victory.

Our View:Gonzalez has now allowed runs in consecutive games, but he still has not walked a batter this season and can be a good source of saves for those in need.
July 7, 2008
NL-only owners or mixed league managers looking for cheap saves might consider making a move on Atlanta's Mike Gonzalez. The Braves closer worked back-to-back games for the first time this season clearing the way for the left-hander to be the fulltime ninth inning option in the Braves' bullpen.

Our View:Gonzalez's last four innings have been perfect and he's struck out seven and walked none in the process. In fact, Gonzalez has yet to walk a batter in his eight innings of work since returning from 2007 elbow surgery.
June 25, 2008
Mike Gonzalez earned his second save in just his third appearance of the season on Wednesday. He gave up one hit and struck out two in his one inning of work.

Our View:It appears that Braves manager Bobby Cox is sticking with Gonzalez ase the closer for his injury-riddled bullpen despite the fact the lefty gave up three runs in one inning on Sunday.
June 18, 2008
Mike Gonzalez, who was removed from the disabled list before the game, recorded his first save in over 13 months. Gonzalez underwent ligament replacement surgery in his left elbow last May.

Our View:With Smoltz on the shelf for the season and Raphael Soriano's status in limbo, Gonzo is now the closer for the Braves and is in line to offer his lucky owner as many as 20 saves in the last three-plus months of the season.
June 18, 2008
As anticipated, the Atlanta Braves have activated LHP Mike Gonzalez from the disabled list, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View:It has been 13 months since Gonzalez underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery. The reliever joined his Atlanta teammates on Tuesday and has been activated for tonight's game against the Rangers at Rangers Ballpark at Arlington.
June 17, 2008
The Braves report LHP Mike Gonzalez is ready to return to the major league club, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Gonzalez underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery last year, and now the reliever appears ready to take the mound for the Braves once more. He joined his Braves teammates on Tuesday and will be activated before Wednesday night's game against the Rangers at Rangers Ballpark at Arlington.
June 16, 2008
Updating an earlier report, Mike Gonzalez (elbow) will be returning to the Braves on Tuesday and will join the active roster on Wednesday, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. "He's throwing good, they say," said manager Bobby Cox. "Hopefully we can count on him for the very end — eighth and ninth. If he's back to his old form, it's a huge plus."

Our View:With all the injuries in the Braves pen there certainly would appear to be an opportunity for Gonzalez to work his way into the closers role in short order if he displays his old form. He allowed just one earned run in 11 innings with one walk and 12 K in Triple-A, so he appears to be throwing the ball very well at the moment.
June 16, 2008
Mike Gonzalez's surgically repaired left elbow has responded well during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Richmond, according to MLB.com.

Our View:He could be activated from the DL during the Braves' next homestand, which begins June 20 against the Mariners. Gonzalez is worth taking a shot on, as he could be tried out for the closer's role with Rafael Soriano's elbow still not where it needs to be, and with John Smoltz done for the season.
June 13, 2008
With Atlanta's bullpen performing poorly the Richmond Times-Dispatch suggests it could mean a quicker return for reliever Mike Gonzalez . The left-hander, coming back from ligament transplant surgery in his elbow, has pitched two rehab assignments that have been impressive.

Our View:Gonzalez allowed one hit and one walk -- and produced a key strikeout -- in one inning last night. With Raphael Soriano's elbow not right, and John Smoltz out for the season, Gonzalez could be on a fast track to the closer role in Atlanta. Owners with bench space might want to gamble on the onetime closer and play the "wait and see" game.
June 11, 2008
Mike Gonzalez tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings Tuesday for Triple-A Richmond. The lefty, who is coming back from Tommy John surgery, has allowed one run while striking out eight and walking none over 7 2/3 innings during his rehab.

Our View:The Braves have a roster spot to fill with Tom Glavine going on the DL, and Gonzalez seems like the most likely candidate to fill that spot. With Rafael Soriano still battling tendinitis, Gonzalez may get the opportunity to close.
June 6, 2008
Mike Gonzalez, who is coming back from Tommy John surgery, threw in the bullpen Friday before the Braves' game against the Phillies and plans to report to Triple-A Richmond on Sunday for one or two injury rehab appearances, according to the AP. He's already appeared in four rehab games for Double-A Mississippi, not allowing a run. Barring a setback, Gonzalez hopes to join the Braves bullpen sometime next week.

Our View:The Braves could use the power lefty in the pen with John Smoltz now out for the year. Gonzalez could pick up a few stray saves on days that Rafael Soriano isn't available, and given Soriano's medical history, it's possible Gonzalez could be saving games regularly at some point. Even in a setup role, the southpaw is worth a roster spot in deeper leagues.
June 5, 2008
Mike Gonzalez needs one more week of rehab at Triple-A Richmond before returning to the Braves, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He is coming off elbow-reconstruction surgery, and Manager Bobby Cox noted that he is doing well, and added, "He probably needs to go a few more times to get his breaking ball back in order. His velocity is 91-93 mph, not far off his mid-90s form."

Our View:Gonzalez could get some save opportunities now that John Smoltz is out for the season, but will likely be eased back in slowly initially upon his return.
June 1, 2008
Mike Gonzalez worked two innings for Double-A Mississippi on Saturday. It was his second rehab outing as he comes back from Tommy John surgery. "He just needs to get back competitive," manager Bobby Cox informs the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Gonzalez will likely spend two weeks in rehab before moving up.

Our View:Gonzalez will likely ease back into a role as a left-handed setup man for John Smoltz and Rafael Soriano. We don't expect Gonzalez to save any games while those two right-handers are healthy.
May 28, 2008
Mike Gonzalez has been cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The southpaw is coming off Tommy John surgery and will likely need 10-14 days before jumping to the majors.

Our View:The Braves are trying to hang around until their bullpen gets in order. Gonzalez won't have any fantasy value, but the thought of this southpaw joining John Smoltz and Rafael Soriano at the end of games should have Braves fans excited.
May 27, 2008
Mike Gonzalez will have his surgically repaired elbow examined by a team doctor Tuesday before beginning what could be a one- to two-week rehab assignment, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:The lefty should be back with the Braves before the All-Star break, barring any setbacks. He'll slide into a setup role.
May 21, 2008
Mike Gonzalez is scheduled to make back-to-back appearances in extended spring training games this weekend before being examined in Atlanta, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution After that he'll begin a brief rehab assignment. Gonzalez is 10 days from the one-year anniversary of Tommy John surgery.

Our View:Gonzalez will come back in a setup role with the Braves but could possibly get some save chances down the line.
May 14, 2008
Mike Gonzalez worked two perfect innings in an extended spring training game on Tuesday. The southpaw is scheduled for another two-inning outing on Tuesday, but he is very close to starting a minor league rehab stint, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Gonzalez is just shy of 12 months removed from Tommy John surgery.

Our View:The Braves bullpen could look significantly stronger in the next two-to-three weeks if they get Gonzalez, Rafael Soriano, and John Smoltz back. Gonzalez will be a setup man with little fantasy value.
May 10, 2008
Mike Gonzalez resumed his rehab in extended spring training on Friday, and had a good day, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He needed just nine pitches, eight of which were strikes, to record three outs. His fastball was clocked at 90-mph.

Our View:His next session is scheduled for Monday, and the Braves hope to have him back by the end of May, which is twelve months after his Tommy John surgery.
May 7, 2008
Left-handed reliever Mike Gonzalez had what the Braves described as a minor setback this week in his recovery from "Tommy John" elbow-ligament surgery, but is still expected back near the end of the month, this according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:The team didn't elaborate on the specifics of the so-called setback, but they also didn't seem to think it was significant to the degree it would result in Gonzalez missing much additional rehab work. Gonzo has some fantasy value in the current Braves bullpen; if in fact he can return by the All Star break with his arm strength in tow.
April 23, 2008
Mike Gonzalez is progressing well in his comeback from TJ surgery and he was able to throw 23 pitches over two innings in a simulated game on Tuesday, according to MLB.com. "He's getting real close," Cox said. Cox even said he could possibly return as early as mid-May. "I'm not saying it's going to happen. But it's a possibility."

Our View:Gonzalez is ahead of schedule, and with the uncertainty of Peter Moylan and Rafael Soriano, the Braves could certainly use Gonzalez's power arm and he might even figure into the saves mix later in the year if he doesn't suffer any setbacks.
April 8, 2008
Mike Gonzalez remains on pace for an early June return (as he recovers from elbow replacement surgery), according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Gonzalez notably faced hitters in live batting practice over the weekend, and next week he is expected to see his first game action in almost a year when he pitches in the extended-spring training program in Florida. Gonzalez will contend for a bullpen role when he returns to the Braves.
February 22, 2008
Mike Gonzalez has looked good throwing of late, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Gonzalez, coming back from TJ surgery, threw 15 pitches at 50 percent velocity and 30 at around 75 percent on Thursday, and he reports that he has yet to suffer any setbacks in his rehabilitation. He hopes to return by early June. Gonzalez will be a welcomed addition to the Braves pen, though the team hopes that by the time he returns Rafael Soriano will have the team's closers spot locked down leaving Gonzalez the 8th inning role once healthy.

Our View:He threw 15 pitches at 50 percent and 30 at 75 percent off the mound Thursday
February 15, 2008
Mike Gonzalez , who underwent Tommy John surgery last May, took his first Spring Training work Friday, according to the team's official website. Manager Bobby Cox was impressed with the bullpen session by Gonzalez saying, "You wouldn't have known Gonzalez was hurt either." Expecting Gonzalez to contribute before the All Star break is eternally optimistic.
January 18, 2008
Mike Gonzalez signed a one-year, $2.3625 million deal Thursday, avoiding arbitration. Gonzalez pitched in only 18 games last year before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He's expected to be sidelined until the All-Star break.
