December 26, 2008
The Giants have signed left-handed starting pitcher Randy Johnson to a 1-year contract worth $8 million, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Johnson returns to the Bay Area where he grew up and will join a rotation that features Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Barry Zito and Jonathan Sanchez - potentially one of the best in the league (that is if Sanchez isn't moved to add a bat). Johnson still has some giddy up in the tank by the way after striking out 173 batters with a 3.91 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP for the D'backs in 2008.
December 18, 2008
The Giants continue to work diligently toward signing Randy Johnson to a one year deal, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:If the Giants do sign Johnson it is believed they will try to move Jonathan Sanchez in order to add a power bat to a lineup that is sorely in need of one.
December 11, 2008
Randy Johnson and the Giants apparently have a mutual interest, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:The A's are also interested in Johnson, but he clearly favors the Giants over Oakland.
December 10, 2008
The Astros could reportedly be interested in bringing Randy Johnson back to Houston, according to the Hot Stove Blog on MLB.com.

Our View:The Astros would join the Dodgers, Giants, Athletics, Rangers, Brewers and Cubs as interested clubs in Johnson. It remains a mystery as to which club Johnson will nail down his 300th win with in 2009, but it is known that he prefers to play in the West.
December 10, 2008
The Cubs are keeping Randy Johnson on the back burner in case they are unable to acquire Jake Peavy from San Diego, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:The Cubs look to be a contender in 2009, but Johnson may turn them down to fulfill his desire to play in the West.
December 9, 2008
SI.com reports that free-agent pitcher Randy Johnson would like to stay out West. The A's, Giants and Dodgers are believed to be possibilities for Johnson, who needs five wins for 300 and 211 strikeouts for 5,000.

Our View:The Cubs and Brewers are among the teams east of west that have expressed interest in the Big Unit, but those unions seem more unlikely with this bit of news.
December 6, 2008
The A's, Dodgers, Giants, Cubs, Brewers and Rangers all have expressed interest in Randy Johnson, according to the East Valley Tribune.

Our View:Johnson would've gone cheaply if Arizona had wanted him back, but there could be a minor bidding war for him. His appeal is being a big-game pitcher for a minimum commitment, as he'll likely sign a one-year deal as he's 45 years old.
December 4, 2008
Randy Johnson has 10 teams interested in him, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He is interested in returning to the bay area to pitch for either Oakland or San Francisco in 2009.

Our View:Johnson will likely go for a one-year deal, but is unlikely to take a discount that he offered Arizona to re-sign him.
December 4, 2008
The Athletics are interested in adding Randy Johnson to their rotation, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View:They would like Johnson to be their fifth starter, who is five wins away from 300. It is known that he wants to finish his career in his native California.
November 26, 2008
Randy Johnson covets a one-year deal and the list of interested MLB teams is nearing double figures, according to ESPN.

Our View:Johnson, who is five wins away from 300, would like to finish his career in his native California, and is currently on the back-burner with the Dodgers.
November 15, 2008
The Hot Stove Blog on MLB.com. states that Randy Johnson may have some interest in playing for St. Louis.

Our View:As of now, there was no indication of discussions regarding Johnson and Cardinals' GM John Mozeliak. The Cardinals would like to address their bullpen and middle infield before pursuing starting pitchers.
November 15, 2008
The Cubs are interested in free agent hurler Randy Johnson, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View:Johnson is 11-0 with a 1.85 ERA over 12 career starts against the Cubs, and is 3-0 over four outings at Wrigley Field, so it is easy to understand why Chicago is interested, especially since they may be able to land him with a one-year contract.
November 14, 2008
Randy Johnson is reportedly high on the Dodgers' target list, according to MLBblogs.com.

Our View:Johnson is only five wins away from 300, and could reach the milestone while pitching for the NL West champion Dodgers.
November 13, 2008
Randy Johnson filed for free agency on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Randy Johnson might consider a pay cut to stay with Arizona, but it's doubtful he'd be willing to sign for the $5 million or less that the Diamondbacks have allotted for bringing him back.
November 11, 2008
Randy Johnson is not likely to re-sign with the Diamondbacks, but he is yet to file for free agency, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View:Arizona roughly has $10 million to spend for Johnson and a second baseman, and the club is hoping he will stay for a reduced price.
October 17, 2008
The Arizona Republic reports that the Diamondbacks do not seem willing to bring Randy Johnson back at anything close to the salary he was paid this season, which was the second year of a two-year, $26 million extension he signed in January 2007.

Our View:Johnson, 45, coming off his second back surgery in as many seasons, was surprisingly durable (30 starts) and largely effective (3.91 ERA) this season, and his 11 wins left him just five victories short of the monumental 300-win plateau.
October 5, 2008
A decision on whether Randy Johnson will return to the Diamondbacks or baseball at all could come next week, the Boston Globe returns.

Our View:Johnson had a good year with a 3.91 ERA in 30 starts, and there should be plenty of interest in him if Arizona decides against retaining him.
September 30, 2008
The Arizona Republic suggests that Randy Johnson would have to accept a significant pay cut if he wants to re-sign with the Diamondbacks.

Our View:The source believes the team will not bring him back at his current $16 million salary, and likely not even at half of that. He is 45, but can still hold his own on the mound, as he maintained a 1.24 WHIP over 30 starts in 2008.
September 28, 2008
Randy Johnson threw a complete game two-hitter against the Rockies on Sunday. The Diamondbacks won the game in the bottom of the ninth to give The Big Unit his 11th win of the season. He struck out nine batters on the afternoon.

Our View:The 45-year-old Johnson, a five-time Cy Young Award winner whose contract expires after this season, earned his 295th career win. He will likely be back for at least one more season as he seeks out his 300th win. He still holds fantasy value largely due to his strikeout rate. In 184 innings, he had 173 K's and a 4.11 ERA.
September 23, 2008
Randy Johnson allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out one in a 7-4 loss to St. Louis.

Our View:The D'Backs need The Big Unit to come up big tonight, but he was unable to do so. He's slated to start again on Sunday against the Rockies.
September 18, 2008
Randy Johnson only gave up run over seven innings in the Diamonbacks' 3-2 win. When Johnson left the game after the seventh, he was in line for the win but the bullpen allowed the Giants to tie the game.

Our View:This was Johnson's second straight start when he pitched well enough to get a win but the lack of run support and the bullpen, have cost the lefty a couple of wins. Johnson has pitched well down the stretch and has given fantasy owners good value this year.
September 13, 2008
Randy Johnson only surrendered one earned run on five hits over six innings in Saturday's 3-2 loss to Cincinnati, with two walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:Johnson fared very well, but was dealt a no decision due to poor run support from his teammates. Johnson was scratched from his last start due to shoulder soreness, and should be fine to keep active in fantasy lineups over the final two weeks of the season.
September 11, 2008
Randy Johnson was scratched from his last start due to a sore left shoulder, but he is expected to return to the hill Saturday against Cincinnati, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View:He is throwing off flat ground and a precautionary MRI revealed no problems. He is only 10-9 with a 4.21 ERA but still holds a favorable 1.28 WHIP.
September 6, 2008
Randy Johnson has been scratched from Sunday's scheduled start against the Dodgers due to a sore left shoulder, according to the AP.

Our View:He will miss one turn and return to the rotation next Saturday against the Reds. Max Scherzer is slated to replace him Sunday.
September 1, 2008
Randy Johnson ha eight strikeouts on Monday, but he also allowed five runs without getting out of the fourth inning against the Cardinals.

Our View:Johnson's downfall was the home run, he allowed four (tying a career-high), and they flew for 1,598 feet. Johnson is winless in four starts, but this was the first time that he allowed more than three earned runs in eight appearances.
August 27, 2008
Randy Johnson struck out nine Padres today in the Diamondbacks 5-4 loss. Johnson threw seven innings giving up three runs while giving up five hits.

Our View:The Diamondbacks bullpen could not hold the lead for Johnson, who was looking for his 295th career win.
August 27, 2008
Randy Johnson faces the Padres today, who he has had recent success against. As a team the Padres are only hitting .162 against him in 148 at-bats.

Our View:Johnson should be in every fantasy leagues' lineup. He has lowered his ERA in each of his last seven starts.
August 22, 2008
Randy Johnson had one of his best games of the season, pitching seven innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits and striking out 13, but the Diamondbacks succumbed to the Marlins by a score of 5-4.

Our View:Johnson should be in all fantasy formats, and he has an ERA under 3.00 for the month of August. He did not get a decision in the team's loss.
August 17, 2008
While his counterpart was dominating on the mound, Arizona lefty Randy Johnson was trying to match his effort, but he and the D'Backs fell short, losing 3-0 to Houston. Johnson pitched seven innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View:Johnson's struggles continue, falling to 10-9 with a 4.16 ERA. This is his third loss in August balanced with two wins, a disappointing month after going 4-1 in July.
August 12, 2008
Randy Johnson won his tenth game of the season, leading Arizona to a 4-2 victory over Colorado. Johnson went six innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out seven.

Our View:Johnson has been fabulous since early July, and has now won six of his past seven starts. He should be a play in all leagues.
August 6, 2008
Randy Johnson had his string of five straight wins snapped Wednesday, but it wasn't his fault. The tall lefty allowed only two runs on seven hits while striking out seven over 7 1/3 innings in a 2-0 loss to Pittsburgh. He was upstaged by Jeff Karstens, who nearly through a perfect game before settling for a two-hit shutout.

Our View:The Big Unit has allowed just these two runs in his last four outings, showing that he's still got something left in the tank.
August 2, 2008
Randy Johnson had a great night on the hill on Friday as he allowed the Dodgers to score only one run, it was unearned, over six innings in his ninth victory of the year.

Our View:Johnson struck out six without allowing a single walk in his third straight outing without allowing an earned run. He may not be the flame thrower of old with only 12 K in his last 20 IP, but he certainly is proving he can still be highly effective.
July 27, 2008
Randy Johnson earned his fourth straight victory while shutting out the Giants in seven innings of work on Sunday. Despite the shutout, he gave up nine hits and only struck out two batters.

Our View:Perhaps Johnson has determined that striking every one out is not his formula for success anymore. In his last 20 innings he has just nine strikeouts, but three wins. Regardless, it appears he is recovered from a stretch that saw him lose six straight. Expect a smarter Big Unit to hit more bats in the second half.
July 21, 2008
Randy Johnson stirred up some old magic on Monday. The southpaw held the Cubs to two hits and no runs over seven innings. Johnson walked one and struck out four. He is now 7-7 over 18 starts and has won three straight decisions.

Our View:The Big Unit remains far from the dominant start of old, but the southpaw apparently still has some game left in him.
July 12, 2008
Veteran LHP Randy Johnson wasn't at his best this evening, but his Arizona teammates insured the offense needed was there to get him his sixth win of the campaign, beating Philadelphia 10-4. Johnson pitched six innings, surrendering four runs (all earned) on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Our View:The Unit gave up two homers, giving the hurler a troublesome six homers allowed over his three July starts. However, he has two more wins now over that same span than he posted all of last month, going 0-5 in five starts.
July 6, 2008
Randy Johnson earned the win on Sunday after striking out 10 Padres in 6.1 innings.

Our View:The Big Unit had lost his previous six starts but rebounded in a big way against San Diego. He is 4-7 with a 5.18 ERA. Fantasy owners may be more concerned with his 92 Ks in 92 innings this season.
July 1, 2008
Randy Johnson was lit up for seven earned runs on eight hits over a mere 3.2 innings in Tuesday's 8-6 defeat to Milwaukee, with three walks and six strikeouts. He surrendered three home runs before getting yanked from the game.

Our View:Johnson falls to 4-7 and his ERA climbs to 5.46. He has lost six straight starts, and has allowed seven earned runs in three of his last four.
June 25, 2008
Randy Johnson held the Red Sox to just two runs over six innings but his mates were unable to do anything against Tim Wakefield leading to Johnson's sixth loss of the year.

Our View:This was a great bounce back performance against a good offense for Johnson after having allowed 15 runs in his last two outings.
June 20, 2008
Randy Johnson hasn't won since May 18th and on this night he allowed 11 hits and seven runs in a complete game loss to the Twins.

Our View:Somehow Johnson threw a complete game with only one strikeout. His ERA currently rests at 5.09 after his second straight game of seven runs allowed signifying that he clearly is nowhere near the pitcher he once was before his constant back issues sapped his stuff.
June 14, 2008
Arizona RHP Randy Johnson suffered through one of his worst starts ever this evening, falling 12-3 to the Royals in interleague action. Johnson lasted jut 4 1/3 innings to surrender eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:That's three consecutive losses for the Unit, giving up a total of 13 earned runs during that span.
June 9, 2008
Randy Johnson was rocked for five runs (four earned) on six hits over 5.2 innings in Monday's 5-3 loss to the Pirates, with five walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:He falls to 4-3 for the season with a 4.10 ERA. That was his highest walk total and tied his second highest number of earned runs allowed this season.
June 3, 2008
Arizona LHP Randy Johnson pushed himself into the second spot on the all-time strikeout leaders list this evening, but despite a strong effort from the mound, the offense failed to back his work and left him with the loss in a 7-1 fall against Milwaukee. Johnson pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits, surrendering just one walk with eight strikeouts.

Our View:Johnson now carries a record of 4-2 on the season, and while he was a perfect 3-0 for the month of May, he is starting June on the wrong foot (though you have to like his 15 walks versus 64 strikeouts thus far).
June 3, 2008
Arizona LHP Randy Johnson has taken sole possession of second place on baseball's career strikeout list, sending Mike Cameron back to the dugout in the first inning of tonight's game versus Milwaukee, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View:It was Johnson's 4,673rd career strikeout, breaking a tie with Roger Clemens and leaving the Arizona Diamondbacks' veteran ace behind only Nolan Ryan, who had 5,714 strikeouts in his career. The 44-year-old hurler has 288 career victories, tying him with Tommy John for 24th in the big leagues and leaving him only 12 short of 300.
May 29, 2008
Randy Johnson fanned nine batters to tie Roger Clemens for second on the all-time strikeout list with 4672. Johnson received a no-decision despite holding the Giants to just two runs over seven innings.

Our View:Johnson looked like the Johnson of old for most of this night, and with the effort he lowered his ERA to 3.83. Johnson isn't the pitcher he once was, but there is no shame in that given his 9.75 K/9 mark which is still top notch.
May 24, 2008
Randy Johnson looked like his old dominating self Saturday in Atlanta, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out 10 over six innings. The Big Unit was dealt a no-decision in the 3-1 loss.

Our View:This was Johnson's first start in Atlanta since his perfect game over four years ago. His trademark slider with filthy Saturday, though his fastball velocity is still not nearly what it once was.
May 18, 2008
Randy Johnson had his best outing of the season on Sunday as he held the Tigers scoreless over seven innings to pick up his fourth win against a lone loss.

Our View:What set today's effort apart from others this season was the fact the he controlled the strike zone throwing 67 of 98 pitches for strikes and walking only one batter. RJ is proving that if physically right, he can still be a very solid major league pitcher.
May 13, 2008
Randy Johnson struggled through five innings allowing nine hits and four runs, but he hung on long enough to pick up his third victory of the season.

Our View:Johnson's ratios are poor with a 5.40 ERA and 1.48 WHIP, but he has 32 K in 31.67 IP with only 11 BB there is some reason to hope for mild improvement moving forward.
May 11, 2008
The Diamondbacks have scratched Randy Johnson from his scheduled start on Sunday. Edgar Gonzalez will take his place, the Arizona Republic confirms. The rainy conditions caused the decision. The Diamondbacks will opt to move their entire rotation back one day.

Our View:Johnson could now be in line for a two-start week against the Rockies and Tigers.
May 6, 2008
Arizona LHP Randy Johnson earned his second win of the season, leading the Diamondbacks to a 6-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Johnson pitched six innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on six hits, walking two and striking out six.

Our View:He gave two homers in his deepest outing thus far this season.
April 30, 2008
Randy Johnson had a rough outing on Wednesday allowing nine hits and six runs in only four innings of work against the Astros though he wasn't involved in the decision.

Our View:On the plus side he didn't allow a walk, but he also struck out only two. Johnson owns a 4.79 ERA and 22 K in 20.2 IP, so he has produced right along the lines that we expected in the early going.
April 20, 2008
Randy Johnson gave up six runs, four of them earned, and six hits in 5.2 innings. He walked three and struck out six in Sunday's loss to the Padres.

Our View:Johnson struggled with his slider and his velocity was registering in the high 80's for most of the afternoon.
April 15, 2008
Randy Johnson wasn't terribly sharp in his season debut on Monday, but he finished with decent numbers. The Big Unit allowed three hits and three unearned runs over five innings. He walked four, struck out seven, and threw 49 of his 90 pitches for strikes. Johnson received a no-decision.

Our View:We expect Randy to sharpen up as he gets more work in. He typically pounds the strike zone much better than he did last night.
April 13, 2008
Veteran hurler and potential Hall of Fame candidate Randy Johnson will make his first start of the season Monday as the Arizona Diamondbacks trip to San Francisco to face Jonathan Sanchez and the Giants.

Our View:Johnson is hoping to re-discover prevalence as a viable threat to batters and could, as the third or fourth option for the rotation, become an important member of an Arizona starting rotation that could rank among the best in the National League.
April 10, 2008
Randy Johnson is ready to go for his first start on Monday in San Francisco, according to the East Valley Tribune. His fantasy stock won't go up until he proves he can still be an effective starter.
April 8, 2008
Randy Johnson, who's coming back from back surgery, allowed three runs while striking out seven over six innings Tuesday in his second rehab start for Triple-A Tucson. A much better performance this time out from the Big Unit. He's expected to be activated from the DL on Monday, but check back for updates to make sure.
April 4, 2008
Randy Johnson, who is still recovering from offseason back surgery, allowed five runs on eight hits in four innings of work Thursday, this according to the East Valley Tribune. The Big Unit struck out one, walked two and dodged trouble in his first three innings. The Sidewinders beat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 12-10. “It’s frustrating because I put in a lot of time and effort this whole offseason into being ready,” Johnson said. “The biggest reward is when you can go and get the results that you want and feel confident and feel like you’re making progress.” That did not happen Thursday. Johnson, who threw 53 of his 78 pitches for strikes, said he felt like he was “regressing” since allowing one hit in three innings against the Angels on March 15. Johnson will pitch Tuesday against Salt Lake at TEP, and at that time the organization will make a determination on whether he will return to the D'backs rotation.
April 3, 2008
Randy Johnson is reportedly going to make his first start with the D-Backs on April 14, according to the East Valley Tribune. Johnson will make one more minor league start for the Sidewinders on Tuesday, to get his pitch count up a bit higher.
April 3, 2008
Randy Johnson is going to start a Triple-A (Tucson) game tonight, according to the Arizona Republic. He threw 75 pitches in his last outing and could challenge the 90-pitch range tonight. After tonight's performance, Johnson and the team will decide his next step. He could be activated from the DL, although he is likely to continue to build up his pitch count in the minors first.
April 1, 2008
Randy Johnson is scheduled to start tonight for Triple-A Tucson. He threw 75 pitches in his last outing and could approach 90 pitches tonight, according to the Arizona Republic. Johnson, who's coming back from back surgery, and the D'Backs will determine the next step in the left-hander's rehab after tonight's outing. It's possible he could be activated from the DL, but it's more likely that he'll make at least one more rehab start to increase his innings total. We'll keep you updated on how the Big Unit fares tonight and what the plan for him will be going forward.
March 26, 2008
Randy Johnson will open the season on the 15-day DL, according to the East Valley Tribune. Johnson is expected to make one more start with the Sidewinders during their season-opening homestand before possibly returning to the Diamondbacks for the last game of their first homestand April 13. When asked if he had a target date for returning to the majors, Johnson answered, “Whenever I am ready. I’ll make one more start right now and see how I feel.” Johnson is recovering from back surgery.
March 25, 2008
Randy Johnson will make a minor league start on Wednesday, according to MLB.com. As the bulk of the Arizona squad travels across town to take on the Colorado Rockies at Hi Corbett Field on Wednesday, eyes will be on one of Chicago's minor league outings at Tucson Electric Park as Johnson gets the start. Johnson has battled to recover from off-season back surgery, and while signs of return have come forth during spring training, fears of starting the season on the DL have persisted. Tomorrow could be a positive step forward.
March 24, 2008
Randy Johnson will likely miss his first turn in the rotation this year, though the team still hopes he will be able to avoid the DL or serve no more than a short stint on it, this according to MLB.com. Johnson hasn't had any setbacks yet, but he just hasn't had enough work to build up his pitch count yet. If you count on a mid-April return for Johnson, you will likely be in the right area, and then it's just a matter of his health determining his worth this season.
March 21, 2008
Randy Johnson was pleased with his performance on Friday, even if it wasn't perfect as he allowed five hits and two runs in 3.2 innings, this according to the AP. “I’d say today was very productive,” he said. “I threw all my pitches, worked both sides of the plate. I made some good pitches and I made some bad ones.” Johnson will likely need at least two more starts to get ready for the rigors of the regular season, so there is a chance that he could start the season on the DL, though up until this point he hasn't suffered any setbacks which is a huge plus in his favor and a great sign for those of you who rostered RJ late in drafts.
March 15, 2008
Randy Johnson was solid over three innings of work against the Angels on Saturday as he only allowed one run on one hit, which was a home run by Gary Matthews. He struck out a pair with no walks and his recovery from back surgery continues to go well.
March 10, 2008
Randy Johnson allowed four runs in 1.1 innings on Monday as he threw 20 of 33 pitches for strikes, this according to MLB.com. Johnson will likely make his next start on Saturday. While the results certainly weren't ideal, the fact that Johnson made it through the outing without a setback is a huge positive. It's looking more and more likely that Johnson will be able to help the D'Backs this season, and perhaps early in April with his comeback from back surgery going so well.
March 8, 2008
Randy Johnson is slated to make his Cactus League debut on Monday, according to MLB.com. "This is exactly where we kind of had it mapped out to," manager Bob Melvin said. "We're right on schedule." Johnson underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back in August. So far, so good, but let's see what he can do on Monday.
March 5, 2008
Randy Johnson tossed 36 pitches in a simulated batting practice session on Tuesday. "He's very encouraged," manager Bob Melvin tells the Arizona Republic. "His back, knock wood, hasn't given him any problems. It's free and easy." Johnson will throw a side session on Saturday and may get into a game next week. Both the team and Johnson agree that his starts and innings may be limited in 2008, and the paper notes 22-to-25 starts as a range.
March 1, 2008
Randy Johnson is scheduled to take the mound for his next throwing session on Tuesday, according to the East Valley Tribune. Johnson will face hitters in batting practice then receive four days of rest, the longest he has gone between outings this spring. Johnson is still about a week behind his mound-mates this spring and will likely miss the first round of the rotation. Johnson is on track to make his regular season debut on April 6 in Colorado.
February 28, 2008
Randy Johnson took to the mound on Thursday and faced live hitting for the first time during spring training. The live batting practice session saw the "Big Unit" throw 53 pitches to teammates Chris Rahl and Trent Oeltjen. Nick Piecoro, the Diamondbacks beat writer for Arizona Republic, suggests that Johnson is about a week behind the other pitchers and will miss the rotation of the regular season. The report mentioned that Johnson could pitch April 6 in Colorado.
February 24, 2008
Randy Johnson threw 26 pitches off a mound Sunday and could be ready to face hitters in his next outing, which is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, according to the AP. "We're going kind of outing to outing with it so we don't get too far ahead of ourselves," manager Bob Melvin said. "We've had no setbacks." The Big Unit is coming back from back surgery and could be great late-round value if he can somehow manage to make 30 starts.
February 22, 2008
Randy Johnson threw a second straight bullpen session without experiencing any problems in his attempt to comeback from back surgery, this according to MLB.com. "He looked great today," Arizona GM Josh Byrnes said. "At this point, for any pitcher, it's sort of just looking comfortable and each time on the mound showing a little bit of progress." Johnson, if healthy, would give the D'Backs the most dominant top-3 in the NL (with Brandon Webb and Dan Haren). The team will continue to take it easy with the Unit, but as of this writing, things are moving in a very positive direction with the dominating lefty.
February 18, 2008
Randy Johnson, who just six months ago underwent his second back surgery in less than a year, was reportedly moving like a kid on Sunday, notes the Baltimore Sun. The Diamondbacks southpaw threw off the mound in front of Bob Melvin and impressed his manager. "He came out throwing bullets," Melvin said.
February 17, 2008
Randy Johnson didn't return from back surgery to be a former shell of himself. "My expectations are the same now as they were when I was 25 or 35," he tells MLB.com. "It was a lot easier when I was throwing 95-100 mph, but now I find it a lot more of a challenge to go out and get Major League hitters out with what I have. I still think I can go out there and dominate at times." Johnson made only 10 starts in 2007, but he is on track to participate fully this spring.
February 7, 2008
Randy Johnson threw off the mound Tuesday for the first time since his back surgery last summer, tossing 25 fastballs and reporting no problems afterwards, according to the Arizona Republic. The lefty is on track to participate fully in spring training.
January 27, 2008
Bob Melvin has watched Randy Johnson play catch lately, and the D-backs manager likes what he's seen, the team's official website reports. Johnson, who suffered a reherniation of a disc in his back last season and underwent back surgery during the summer for the second consecutive season, is expected to be ready to go when pitchers and catchers have their first workout on Feb. 15.
