As expected, the Cubs have inked Joey Gathright to a one-year deal, according to MLB.com. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View:The left-handed outfielder should fit in well with the Cubs, and his speed should prove to be an asset as they make another run at the playoffs in 2009. He swiped 21 bases over 105 games with the Royals in 2008.
December 15, 2008
WSCR 670 in Chicago reports that the Cubs will sign outfielder Joey Gathright. He was non-tendered by the Royals.

Our View:Gathright is a speedster who appeared in 105 games last season. He hit .254, scored 41 runs and stole 21 stolen bases.
December 13, 2008
Outfielder Joey Gathright was not tendered a contract by the Royals and has become a free agent, the Kansas City Star reports.

Our View:Gathright will always be intriguing to fantasy owners due to his speed. He tallied 21 stolen bases with a .254 average this year.
December 12, 2008
The Denver Post suggests that Joey Gathright could be an option for the Rockies if the Royals opt to non-tender him.

Our View:The Rockies covet a left-handed hitter to complement Ryan Spilborghs in center field, and Gathright fits the bill.
October 5, 2008
The Boston Globe points out that Joey Gathright had only three doubles in 279 at-bats in 2008.

Our View:Gathright is a slap hitter, but his 2008 season was a bit extreme with a pitiful .272 slugging percentage. Despite his great speed and defense, Gathright could have a tough time sticking around in the majors if he continues to hit so poorly.
August 21, 2008
Joey Gathright has been activated from the 15-day DL following his bout with a bruised right shoulder, according to the AP. Mitch Maier has been placed on the 15-day DL as the corresponding move.

Our View:Fantasy owners with Gathright will get speed back to their lineups, as he registered 21 stolen bases this season.
August 2, 2008
Royals outfielder Joey Gathright started to throw and in a few days he will begin hitting, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View:Gathright is a good option for fantasy players needing stolen bases, but only if you can live with that .302 on-base percentage. But if you are in a league that uses slugging percentage, he probably isn't worth the trouble. Among his 62 hits, just three have gone for extra bases.
July 24, 2008
Joey Gathright has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a bone bruise in his right shoulder, according to the AP. Outfielder Mitch Maier was called up from Triple-A Omaha as the adjoining move.

Our View:Gathright was merely a serviceable AL-only outfielder as he hit .251 with no homers and 17 RBI over 247 at-bats. He held his most value with 21 stolen bases.
July 6, 2008
Joey Gathright went 1-for-2 with a walk and a steal on Saturday, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View:He missed the previous two games due to a sore left shoulder, but is seemingly safe to consider for AL-only league lineups again.
July 3, 2008
Joey Gathright, who suffered a left shoulder separation, didn't start in center field tonight against the Orioles. Gathright suffered the injury when he attempted an over-the-fence catch during a 5-2 loss to Baltimore on Wednesday night. David DeJesus was moved from left to center field. Jose Guillen went from designated hitter to left field and Billy Butler served as the teams designated hitter.

Our View:The Royals television network reported that the Royals center fielder could have played, but manager Trey Hillman opted to give him the day off.
June 9, 2008
Joey Gathright is in the Royals' starting lineup today, according to MLB.com.

Our View:He is back in center field, and batting at the bottom of the order. There was speculation that he may have separated his shoulder on Sunday, but that does not look to be case.
June 5, 2008
Joey Gathright had a hit, scored a run, and stole his 15th and 16th bases of the year on Thursday night. David DeJesus also stole his fifth base of the year against the White Sox.

Our View:Gathright certainly is getting a chance to show his stuff for the Royals but he is hitting just .250 with a terrible OBP of under .300, limiting him to the bottom of the order. Gathright will continue to steal enough bases to maintain his value, but he has been truly deficient in the other categories.
May 18, 2008
Kansas City outfielder Joey Gathright will be out of the starting lineup for the Royals today after suffering an ugly collision with fellow outfielder David DeJesus, according to MLB.com.

Our View:DeJesus was coming from right field as he chased a fly ball from Florida's Mike Jacobs. DeJesus leaped to make the catch only to find Gathright in the path to the ball, meeting in mid-air. Gathright's left shoulder popped out and then back in during the play and is being held out as a precautionary measure. He will be available to play on Sunday, though the team indicates they will re-evaluate. DeJesus reports he is fine and will be in the lineup today.
May 17, 2008
Joey Gathright is starting in center field on Saturday night with David DeJesus in right. Gathright is leading off as the Royals square off against Florida and left-hander Scott Olsen.

Our View: Gathright is a spark plug from the leadoff spot and leads the Royals in stolen bases.
May 14, 2008
Light-hitting Joey Gathright accounted for all of the Royals' runs batted in helping the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 2-0 on Wednesday night. Gathright drove in two runs with a second inning single.

Our View:Gathright who has 10 stolen bases on the season was caught stealing in the game. His third "caught-stealing" of the season.

March 25, 2008
Joey Gathright stepped up against the Dodgers on Monday night after David DeJesus went down with an ankle injury. He blasted three hits for two RBI, and also collected a stolen base. He should be the Royals' top bench outfielder this season.
March 21, 2008
Joey Gathright had to exit Thursday's game in the ninth inning after feeling tightness in his hamstring, according to MLB.com. Manager Trey Hillman said it was just a precautionary measure. "Just tightened up. That's why I went ahead and ran A.C. out there. I didn't want him to pull," manager Trey Hillman said. "I was glad when he came in [because] I asked him immediately if he pulled and he said, 'No, just tight.' We'll see how he is tomorrow." Gathright isn't in line to start in Kansas City, but he's still worth owning in deeper leagues because of his stolen base potential.
March 4, 2008
Joey Gathright went 1-for-3 with a triple, two runs, one RBI, and a stolen base in Kansas City’s Cactus League win over the Rockies on Tuesday, a nice performance for a man hoping to earn a job in the starting outfield for the Royals this season.
March 3, 2008
Joey Gathright stole three bases, scored twice and recorded an RBI in big day for the speedster who is fighting for a starting role in a deep KC outfield. Last month Gathright told a reporter from the AP that he wouldn't be considered the team's fourth outfield had ex-manager Buddy Bell let him run last year. Last month, Gathright told a reporter from the AP that he wouldn't be considered the team's fourth outfield had ex-manager Buddy Bell let him run last year. Gathright certainly has the talent to steal at least 30 bases; in an everyday role the center fielder could likely steal closer to 50.
February 22, 2008
Joey Gathright feels that if he had stolen 30 bases last year he wouldn't be in a fight for playing time in the Royals OF, this according to a report from the AP. However, Gathright said that former manager Buddy Bell limited his work on the bases last year which precluded him from reaching the 30-SB mark (he had only nine). “In Triple-A, I had nobody telling me when to go and when not to go. When you have the green light, you have control over when you should go. That’s all it is. If you’re not comfortable on first base, you’re not going to be able to steal a base.” Gathright has long been a fine end game grab in AL Only leagues because of that speed, and he certainly has the talent to steal at least 30 bases if given the chance. If he can continue to slap the ball around the field and get on base (.371 OBP last year), Gathright figures to have a long career even if he never receives the playing time he craves.
