White Sox general manager Kenny Williams may still try to find a free agent to fill center field, but he also isn't afraid to use Jerry Owens in 2009. "The fact of the matter is, I have confidence in the players we're bringing back," Williams tells the Chicago Tribune. "Obviously, a couple of them had setbacks [in 2008]. But Josh Fields and Jerry Owens... I know the type of talent they possess. And I think they're going to be assets to us. It's that simple."

Our View:If the season began today, Owens would presumably battle Brian Anderson for the starting job. Owens opened last season with a groin injury and was never able to regain his major league standing. But he possesses good speed and could be an AL-only asset for steals in 2009, provided he wins a job.

Jerry Owens, a presumptive starting outfielder at the start of the season who was injured and sent to the minors, has been recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Monday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Owens lost his lineup spot to Carlos Quentin and hasn't been seen since. Owens likely won't have any value unless someone goes down with injury, though he did hit .276 with 30 steals in the minors and could offer some speed in AL-only leagues.

Jerry Owens left Tuesday's Triple-A game with an undisclosed injury after catching a fly ball in the first inning, according to Mark Gonzales of ChicagoSports.com. Owens was nagged with a groin injury that cost him a spot on the opening day roster with the Sox.

Our View:Owens was being considered to replace Paul Konerko on the big league roster. The White Sox have instead purchased the contract of his minor league teammate, DeWayne Wise.

The White Sox are not ready to call up speedy Jerry Owens from Triple-A, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Owens was projected to be Chicago's leadoff hitter heading into spring training, but Manager Ozzie Guillen said, "We talked about him, but we left the conversation right there. We talked about don't panic yet. I explained to him what's wrong with the hitting. The hitting is not the problem. Right now, we are OK. We have to wait for the right time to call him up." GM Kenny Williams added, "'The way we put the club together is one in which he can go with a smaller lineup or a big lineup. Now once Jerry Owens gets a few more at-bats underneath him, we can slide him into the mix in some way, shape or form, and then Ozzie has another weapon to use. But you've got to understand Jerry didn't have much of a spring training, so you don't want to bring someone up too soon, and then if he's not playing every day, he loses his stroke."

Our View:Carlos Quentin is playing very well in left field (with eight homers and 26 RBI), and Nick Swisher and Jermaine Dye are both firmly planted in the other two spots in the outfield, so there really is no need for Owens right now. The team is also content with using Brian Anderson as a top reserve.

The White Sox activated Jerry Owens from the 15-day DL on Friday, but the speedy outfielder will stay at Triple-A Charlotte, the Chicago Tribune reports. Owens had been out due to a tear in his right adductor muscle.

Our View:Fantasy owners who've been holding onto Owens feared this day would be coming. Nick Swisher and Carlos Quentin have locked down the two outfield spots alongside Jermaine Dye, and the Sox are fine with Brian Anderson and Alexei Ramirez as backups. Owens will come up if an injury occurs, but he could be stuck in the minors for a while.
