Rene Rivera has signed a minor league deal with the Mets, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:He will be invited to spring training. He last appeared with the Mariners in 2006, when he hit an anemic .152 over 99 at-bats.

The Mariners have optioned Rene Rivera to Double-A West Tennessee, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He was trying to earn a role as the backup catcher, but it looks like Jamie Burke has won that job.

Even though Rene Rivera has started the last three games, manager Mike Hargrove still says Kenji Johjima is the No. 1 catcher, according to the Mariners website. "I want to give Rene a little more playing time," said Hargrove.

Manager Mike Hargrove said that the only time Rene Rivera will start during the second half of the season is when there are day games after night games, according to the Mariners website. Rivera is hitting .188 with two HR and three RBI in 48 AB for Seattle.

Even though Felix Hernandez pitched well to backup catcher Rene Rivera on Sunday, that doesn't mean he will necessarily start the next time Hernandez takes the mound, according to the Seattle Times. "I don't believe in personal catchers," said manager Mike Hargrove. "I am not going to go out of my way to put a catcher in the lineup with certain pitchers going. But I'm not going to dodge it, either."
