Newsbreakers
September 23, 2008
Lou Montanez homered, representing all of the offense for the Orioles in their 5-2 loss to Tampa. He was 1-for-4 with two RBI on the day.

Our View:Montanez has seen irregular playing time, and has not been someone fantasy owners should have been counting on, despite his solid August.
September 9, 2008
Manager Dave Trembley indicated that outfielder Lou Montanez is going to see more action in the closing weeks of the season to see what he can do, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:Montanez holds a solid .324 average over 68 at-bats, and has been productive with 14 runs scored and nine RBI. He is worth picking up in AL-only leagues with more playing time on the horizon this month.
September 2, 2008
Lou Montanez has done nothing but hit for the Orioles since his call-up from the minors. And once again, even in a losing effort, he went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Baltimore's 14-2 loss to the Red Sox.

Our View:Montanez is absolutely a guy fantasy owners should be all over. He hasn't shown great power yet, but he's scored a bunch of runs and rarely strikes out, which is a good sign.

Lou Montanez helped the Orioles win a game on Monday that started in April. Resuming the contest in the 12th inning after it had been suspended in the spring, Montanez hit a bases loaded single in the 14th inning, leading the Orioles to a 4-3 win over the White Sox.

Our View:Montanez has been a quality player in his limited time in the big leagues. He is hitting .375, and is certainly someone fantasy owners should keep in mind if they need outfield depth, especially in AL-only leagues.
August 16, 2008
Lou Montanez was not available on Saturday due to an injured left hand and wrist. He was hit by a throw on Friday. "Montanez is not able to swing a bat," manager Dave Trembley informs MLB.com. "When he slid into second [Friday] night, he got hit. So he's sore and he's not in the lineup." The outfielder may be able to play on Sunday.

Our View:The ailment doesn't sound serious, and it hopefully won't cool off Montanez's hot bat.
August 14, 2008
Lou Montanez continues his scorching run of offense, as he went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI in the Orioles win over the Indians. Both of his RBI came in the eighth inning, in separate at-bats, as the team batted around.

Our View:Montanez is hitting .474 in his 19 at-bats on the season. We've sung his praises before, but just to remind you, he was a top pick in the draft in 2002 and he was obliterating minor league pitching. It may have taken him a while longer than some others, but he shouldn't be ignored in AL-only leagues.
August 10, 2008
Luis Montanez went 3-for-4 with an RBI in Baltimore's 15-7 loss to the Rangers.

Our View:Montanez is hitting .500 this season, albeit in just 10 at-bats. Still, he was a top-five pick in the 2002 MLB draft, he was destroying Double-A pitching, and now he's off to a good start in Baltimore. If you need a sleeper who could provide your fantasy team with some offense, take a look at Montanez.
August 5, 2008
The Orioles have called up Luis Montanez from Double-A Bowie, the Baltimore Sun reports. The 26-year-old outfielder was hitting .335-26-97-90 over 116 games.

Our View:Way back in 2002, Montanez was the third overall pick by the Cubs. We're not sure why he hasn't moved up to Triple-A this year, but he is beating up on Double-A pitching. With Adam Jones out, Montanez could get a chance to show his stuff. Nick Markakis, Luke Scott, and Jay Payton are the other three outfielders on the roster.
August 2, 2008
Orioles minor leaguer Luis Montanez has been crushing the ball all year, and recently hit for the cycle, making it harder for the Orioles to ignore him, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:Montanez is hitting .332 with 25 home runs and 94 RBI in Double-A. Though at age 26, he's too old to be considered a true prospect, if he keeps clubbing the ball like this, the Orioles will at least have to consider calling him up.
