The Houston Chronicle reports that Astros' GM Ed Wade is not confident in going with J.R. Towles as the catcher for next season. "We’re going to pay attention to what’s in the catching market and see if there’s a guy out there who can make sense for us and slide in here and at the very least do a good job until J.R. gets his feet under him or until other things happen,” Wade said. “The catching market is always tricky because it’s usually thin and the guys that are out there seem to sign pretty quickly.”

Our View:Towles is 24 and he is expected to come around soon, but it appears Wade wants to bring in more spring training competition other than Humberto Quintero. The prospect hit just .137 over 146 at-bats.

Houston catcher J.R. Towles went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts, as his horrid season continued in the Astros' 8-1 loss to Florida.

Our View:Towles is hitting just .139 on the season, and in his four at-bats in September, he has struck out three times. No fantasy value whatsoever here.

J.R. Towles was one of five Astros players called on Monday, this according to the Associated Press. The others were Jack Cassell, Fernando Nieve, Alberto Arias and Edwin Maysonet.

Our View:Towles will have a month to prove if he belongs in the team's plans or not after hitting just .143 in 140 AB this season. Towles hit .304 with a .870 OPS in 48 games in the PCL, and he will try to convert that success into performance at the major league level.
July 22, 2008
J.R. Towles has been optioned to Triple-A Round Rock as the Astros activated catcher Humberto Quintero from the DL, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View:Towles only hit .143 over 140 at-bats with the Astros this season, and proved he is not yet ready to make an impact in the big leagues.
July 21, 2008
Catcher Humberto Quintero is nearing the end of his minor league rehab assignment, and the Houston Chronicle states that J.R. Towles is the likely candidate to get sent down when Quintero rejoins the Astros.

Our View:Towles was given another chance with the Astros, but could not take advantage as he currently holds a dismal .143 average over 140 at-bats.
