Randy Wolf, P Thursday 12/4, 12:50 PM CT
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports indicates that the Yankees are interested in Randy Wolf.

Our View: The Astros did not offer the free agent hurler arbitration, so the Yankees would not lose draft picks by signing him. He held a 1.38 WHIP over 33 starts in 2008, and wouldn't be a bad option for the back of their rotation.
Randy Wolf, P Thursday 12/4, 9:33 AM CT
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports mentioned Randy Wolf as an option for the Dodgers' rotation.

Our View: Wolf would be favorable to the club if they miss out on the higher-profile free agent starting pitchers. Wolf held a passable 1.38 WHIP in 2008, and the Dodgers would not lose draft picks by signing him as the Astros declined to offer him arbitration.
Mark Loretta, 2B Thursday 12/4, 9:12 AM CT
The Red Sox are reportedly considering Mark Loretta to add depth to their infield, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Loretta would have a better chance to play regularly with the Pirates, but would have a better chance to win a championship with the Red Sox.
Mike Hampton, P Wednesday 12/3, 8:32 PM CT
Mike Hampton has finalized his deal with the Astros, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: The deal is for one year and $2 million. It contains another $2 million in perfomance bonuses.
Brad Ausmus, C Tuesday 12/2, 9:52 PM CT
The Astros declined to offer salary arbitration to free agent Brad Ausmus, according to the AP.

Our View: Ausmus is now retired but the Padres are said to be trying to lure him out of retirement.
Doug Brocail, P Tuesday 12/2, 4:57 PM CT
The Houston Astros announced that they have signed pitcher Doug Brocail to a one-year, $2.5-million contract, according to Astros.com.

Our View: Brocail was solid out of the Astros bullpen last year with a record of 7-5 and a solid WHIP of 1.22.
Roy Oswalt, P Tuesday 12/2, 2:04 PM CT
The Braves have inquired about Astros' ace hurler Roy Oswalt, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View: The Braves have not received a favorable reply from the Astros. The Braves are seemingly looking for a backup plan in case they cannot land Jake Peavy or AJ Burnett.
Mark Loretta, 2B Tuesday 12/2, 11:59 AM CT
The Pirates are targeting free agent infielder Mark Loretta, MLBlogs.com confirms. The Dodgers, Phillies, and Diamondbacks are also interested in the 14-year veteran.

Our View: Loretta makes a lot of sense for the Pirates, who may try to trade Jack Wilson and could use backup options at second and third base. But we have to wonder why Loretta might choose them when the oher suitors offer much, much better shots at a World Series.
Randy Wolf, P Tuesday 12/2, 10:57 AM CT
Randy Wolf was not offered salary arbitration by the Astros, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: GM Ed Wade would still like to re-sign him however, and did not offer arbitration for economic reasons. Wolf could be a hot target later in free agency as the pool of available players gets more shallow, as he held a 1.38 WHIP over 33 starts in 2008.
Mike Hampton, P Monday 12/1, 2:55 PM CT
FOX 26-Houston is reporting that Mike Hampton has agreed to a deal with the Astros.

Our View: The agreement is pending Hampton successfully completing a team physical, and terms of the deal were not disclosed. Hampton won a career-best 22 games with the Astros in 1999.
Mark Loretta, 2B Monday 12/1, 2:12 PM CT
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN indicates that at least four MLB clubs are interested in veteran infielder Mark Loretta.

Our View: The known teams interested are the Diamondbacks, Pirates, Phillies, and Dodgers. The 37-year-old could provide adequate insurance for Chase Utley early in the season while he recovers from his hip surgery. The Diamondbacks would consider him to replace Orlando Hudson, and he would help the Pirates' middle infield, which was a major area of need. He would provide favorable depth for the Dodgers as well.
