Newsbreakers
Jonathan Sanchez, P Thursday 12/4, 6:12 PM CT
Jonathan Sanchez will not be traded for "any old player," according to the Mercury News.

Our View: Sanchez went 9-12 with a 5.01 ERA last year, but he's still only 26.
Edgar Renteria, SS Thursday 12/4, 10:56 AM CT
The Giants have officially inked Edgar Renteria to a two-year deal for $18.5 million, according to FOX Sports.

Our View: The 33-year-old will replace Omar Vizquel at shortstop, with Emmanuel Burriss moving over to second. The Cardinals were interested in bringing back Renteria, but opted for Khalil Greene instead. Renteria was not offered arbitration by the Tigers, so the Giants do not lose draft picks by signing him.
Matt Cain, P Wednesday 12/3, 6:09 PM CT
If the Giants were to sign C.C. Sabathia, the untouchable tag might be removed from Matt Cain, according to ESPN.

Our View: The Braves were previously rumored to be interested in Cain and still could have interest as their rotation has many questions with Tim Hudson, John Smoltz, and Tom Glavine all having injury problems and Mike Hampton leaving for Houston. Therefore, it's unlikely that the Braves' acquisition of Javier Vasquez would lower their interest in Cain.
Bob Howry, P Wednesday 12/3, 3:05 PM CT
The San Francisco Giants have signed reliever Bob Howry to a one-year deal worth $2.75 million, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: Howry was with the Cubs last season, and struggled to the tune of a 5.35 ERA and 1.46 WHIP. He had good control, walking only 1.66 BB/9, but allowed too many hits, and ended up with a 11.46 H/9.
Jonathan Sanchez, P Wednesday 12/3, 2:21 PM CT
The Florida Marlins and San Francisco Giants have discussed a deal that would send Jorge Cantu to San Francisco in return for hurler Jonathan Sanchez, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Even though Sanchez had his struggles this year, left-handers with talent don't grow on trees. He just turned 26, and last season was his first in the big leagues as a full-time starter. Cantu is a solid player, but is a free swinger who walked just 40 times in 668 plate appearances last season.
Tim Lincecum, P Wednesday 12/3, 12:59 PM CT
Tim Lincecum had said previously that he wanted to work on a series of one-year contracts, but now he is open to working out a long-term deal with the Giants, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: Lincecum won the N.L. Cy Young Award for his stellar 2008 campaign, and the Giants would be wise to lock him up, though there is a thinking in some parts that his herky-jerky mechanics will lead to an eventual injury.
