Earlier in the week we reported Great Britain Basketball [GBB] officials feared the insurance problems preventing Luol Deng from playing for his country will rule him out of the 2012 Olympic Games in London and even put Britain's involvement in the tournament in doubt. Today we learn those issues have been resolved after the national association bumped up the insurance to cover his lucrative NBA contract, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Deng signed a new deal with the Chicago Bulls last month reportedly worth up to $80 million. British Basketball had been struggling to pay the insurance for the 23-year-old Sudanese-born player, who moved to London as a child to escape the conflict in his homeland. However, the association said Saturday it had "reluctantly" agreed to increase his coverage, meaning Deng can play against Israel in Tel Aviv on Wednesday and against the Czech Republic in London next Saturday. Deng is Britain's biggest basketball star, and the team would have little hope of reaching next year's Eurobasket tournament in Poland without the forward. He is also the cornerstone of Britain's push to have a competitive team at the 2012 London Olympics.

How much is Luol Deng worth to Great Britain? Well, it could cost them as much as $2.5 million for insurance on the Bulls forward. According to Sporting News Today if Deng plays for Great Britain each summer up until the 2012 Olympics in London the insurance alone on Deng could cost $2.5 million.

Our View:Britain plays its first qualifier next week for the European Championship in Tel Aviv. We will continue to follow this story and should be very interesting to see if Deng will suit up.

Great Britain Basketball [GBB] officials fear that the insurance problems that are preventing Luol Deng , the Chicago Bulls forward, from playing for his country will rule him out of the 2012 Olympic Games in London and even put Britain's involvement in the tournament in doubt, according to Times Online.

Our View:The root of the problem lies with MetLife, the NBA's insurer, which covers the top 150 salaries in the American league on a group policy. Under the terms of its agreement with the NBA, MetLife has the right to exclude 14 high-risk players every year, a decision based on the individual's injury history and the amount of money remaining on his contract. Deng could be one of those players, and as such the NBA would not grant him permission to play for the Olympic squad of his homeland.
