Coach Stan Van Gundy is "intrigued" with Marcin Gortat's athleticism and the big man will be in the rotation when the season begins Wednesday, according to the Orlando Sentinel. Assistant coach Brendan Malone, who works with Gortat, said he has seen "significant improvement in his body, his game, his confidence. His job is run, defend, rebound. He'll get better the more minutes he plays. He has great feet. His jump shot is better and he can now make 10 free throws in a row." When asked how much Gortat has progressed, GM Otis Smith said, "light years."

Our View:Obviously Gortat won't be starting with Dwight Howard around, but if something should happen to the stud, Gortat could be an intriguing sleeper.

In wednesday's showdown with Chicago, Marcin Gortat was 7-of-11 with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Although a great effort, Orlando went on to lose to Chicago 86-74.

Our View:Gortat hopes his strong play in the summer league will extend his playing time this upcoming season. He only averaged 6.7 minutes off the bench last season.

The Magic have decided to ink 2005 draft pick Marcin Gortat to a contract. The Polish center has spent the last two seasons playing in Europe, according to the Orlando Sentinel. He played well on the Magic's Summer League team earlier this month, averaging 10 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.2 blocked shots. "We've decided to keep him here instead of sending him back to Europe again," said Magic general manager Otis Smith. "We think he'll develop faster here, and we want to see what he can do for us. We think he can become an NBA player."
