Newsbreakers

Pistons forward Antonio McDyess will be the first big man off the bench, and will have a significant role, according to the Detroit News.

Our View:The starter will be either Amir Johnson, Jason Maxiell or Kwame Brown, with the best bet being Maxiell. McDyess has limited fantasy value this season, but does put up solid rebounding numbers.

Pistons' coach Michael Curry indicates that Antonio McDyess will have to compete with Jason Maxiell, Amir Johnson, and Kwame Brown for the starting gig at power forward this season, according to the Detroit News. Curry stated, "Whoever wins that starting spot won't necessarily be the best player. I think it's hands-down that McDyess is our second-best post player behind Rasheed. But who we end up starting will be the player who gives us the best balance."

Our View:Curry would like to be able to bring McDyess and Rodney Stuckey off the bench together, forming a second pick-and-roll combo as effective as the starting duo of Chauncey Billups and Rasheed Wallace. McDyess wasn't a big scorer last season (averaged 8.8 points), but remained a solid rebounder (averaged 8.5 boards).

Sources indicate the Detroit Pistons, now officially done for the 2007-08 season, are deciding on the future of coach Flip Saunders, according to the Toronto Star.

Our View:Saunders followed the great Larry Brown three years ago and has seen each and every effort fall short of expectation in Detroit, failing to make the Finals in each. General manager Joe Dumars has avoided commenting on the situation, but league sources indicate that a move seems all too likely for a team expecting to compete for titles. At this time, the Star has named Michael Curry as the likely replacement should Saunders be fired. We will update as news becomes available.
