Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Philadelphia 76ers center Jason Smith underwent surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Wednesday.

The procedure was performed by Dr. David Altchek, the attending orthopaedic surgeon in the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

Smith was originally hurt during a drill at an NBA-approved camp in Las Vegas in August 6. No timetable has been set for his return, but he will likely miss all of the 2008-09 season.

Newsbreakers
Elton Brand, FFriday 10/10, 8:31 PM CT
Elton Brand scored a game-high 24 points in Friday's 109-103 preseason loss to the Knicks. He also collected four boards, an assist, and two steals.

Our View:He played a little over 22 minutes, and is fitting in well with his new club, evidenced by tonight's performance.
Kareem Rush, GThursday 10/9, 4:48 PM CT
Kareem Rush returned to practice on Thursday after missing most of the previous three days with a sprained ankle. He could be ready to go for Friday night's preseason game, according to phillyBurbs.com.

Our View:Should Rush return to health, he could play a significant role on the Sixers team this season. He is their best perimeter threat and could approach 150 three-pointers this season.
Elton Brand, FWednesday 10/8, 9:58 PM CT
Elton Brand shot 2-for-6 and finished with eleven points, four rebounds, and one block in the Sixers 98-92 win over the Celtics.

Our View:Brand played 22 minutes and is obviously still getting used to his teammates. Expect him to go through some growing pains initially, but he should be his typical dominant self before long.
