Wizards ink McGee
Washington, DC (Sports Network) - The Washington Wizards signed center JaVale McGee, their 2008 first-round draft pick, to a contract on Wednesday.

The 7-foot McGee, who was selected 18th overall, was an early entry candidate out of Nevada. He led the WAC in blocked shots last season (2.8 bpg), and finished second among all WAC players in rebounding (7.3 rpg).

"JaVale has a chance to be a solid addition to our team, so we're excited to have him officially signed," Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld said. "We were impressed with his athleticism and shot blocking when ... More...

Newsbreakers
Darius Songaila, FSunday 8/24, 10:02 AM CT
Washington forward Darius Songaila pulled out of the Olympics because of a sore back, according to the Washington Post. He began experiencing discomfort while training with the Lithuanian team last month, only a few days before it embarked for China.

Our View:According to Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld, Songaila is expected to be healthy when the Wizards open training camp late next month.
Gilbert Arenas, GTuesday 7/22, 3:04 PM CT
Gilbert Arenas has set expecations high as he is targeting a championship with the Wizards, according to the AP. He believes the Wizards are among the five best teams in the NBA when healthy, and he said, "We just have a great group of guys. We’re going to put a banner up there, a championship banner. We’re going to do it for team owner Abe Pollin. This is where I need to be. This is where I need to finish my legacy."

Our View:Arenas is a three-time All-Star, and recorded a career-best 29.3 points per game with the Wizards back in 2005-06, meaning he can light it up on any given night (when healthy). If he and his supporting cast in Washington can stay intact next season, Arenas could be headed for a strong bounce-back campaign.
Gilbert Arenas, GFriday 7/18, 1:01 PM CT
Gilbert Arenas decided to mock Richard Jefferson for landing in Milwaukee with the Bucks, according to NBA.com. Arenas said, "HAHAHA! Oh man, now that is funny. When I heard that, I started laughing. Oh man, did I start laughing. You know why? Because every player hates Milwaukee. Nobody wants to live in Milwaukee. I’m sorry, Milwaukee, to come down hard on you, but no one in the NBA wants to play in Milwaukee."

Our View:Arenas is truly a character.
