August 8, 2005 The Charlotte Observer reports that Freddie Jones unexpectedly announced his retirement from football. "It was in the best interest of my family that I conclude my career at this time," he said in a statement released by the Panthers, with whom he had signed during the offseason. He was primarily being used as a blocking tight end in camp, and Kris Mangum likely will step into the starting role now. |
