Chris Simms has decided not to participate in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offseason workouts, an indication he no longer fits into next season's plans and could be traded, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Although the workouts are voluntary, Simms also skipped last week's quarterback orientation for the first time in his career. "I just think … it's in my best interest to continue my own workouts and to just wait and see what happens with the team," Simms said. "I don't really know what's going to happen. As far as the Bucs and the quarterback position goes, it's always an adventure." Simms, who has not taken a regular-season snap since rupturing his spleen in September 2006, said he is completely recovered from the surgery, which forced him to sit out all of last season. The Bucs have six quarterbacks under contract: Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese, Simms, Luke McCown, Bruce Gradkowski and the retired Jake Plummer.

Bucs GM Bruce Allen said that Chris Simms could still be on the roster for training camp, according to the Tampa Tribune. Whether that happens will depend on his offseason performance in mini-camps, etc. The Bucs plan to bring five quarterbacks into camp -- maybe even six if Jake Plummer comes out of seclusion. He still has some upside, but with Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese, Luke McCown and Bruce Gradkowski in the mix, he has an uphill climb just to make the roster.
March 3, 2008
The Buccaneers have acquired quarterback Brian Griese from the Bears in exchange for a sixth or seventh-round draft pick, the Chicago Tribune reports. You can never have enough arms, right Mr. Gruden? Griese will likely be the primary backup to Jeff Garcia, although we're still not quite sure what to expect out of Chris Simms in 2008.
