The odds are good that the Cardinals will reach a new deal with Kurt Warner prior to the start of training camp, according to Pro Football Weekly. His agent (Mark Bartelstein) stated, "Both sides would like to get something done within the next couple of weeks. Kurt is obviously a critical piece of the team."

Our View:It has been believed that the Cardinals are trying to reach a deal for two years, but Bartelstein said his client is looking at a couple of different options. Warner has had trouble staying healthy, but will serve as one of the top backup quarterbacks in the league, as he fired 27 touchdown passes in 2007.

Kurt Warner is looking for a new contract, but talks have not progressed quickly, according to the East Valley Tribune. Warner is looking to sign for two more seasons.

Our View:Warner is going to be the backup to Matt Leinart heading into training camp, but he was effective in 2007, throwing for 27 touchdowns. He is just one Leinart injury away from being the Cardinals starter.

Reports out of Arizona indicate the Cardinals have switched gears and are now putting full focus on getting veteran quarterback Kurt Warner signed to a new deal, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View:The team has been working with linebacker Karlos Dansby with hopes of getting their franchise player signed and sealed, and we have been filling pages of reports on the team's efforts to get receiver Anquan Boldin happy. However, now the team wants to insure Warner is locked into deal that will insure he's on the roster. This is a bit worrisome on several fronts. For starters, now we must wonder just how happy the team is with young arm Matt Leinart, obviously concerned with the need to keep a secondary option. Reports also indicate that Boldin is now stating he is unsure if he will have a future in Arizona, and choosing to reflect on an aging secondary passer could put him off. We will update as the saga in Arizona continues to unfold.

Kurt Warner has been taking some snaps with the first-string offense, but he remains the backup to Matt Leinart. "Same thing I said back at the end of the season: Matt's our starter," head coach Ken Whisenhunt informs the AP. "Kurt's going to be there pushing him."

Our View:We expect Leinart to keep the gig if he can improve and show that he is ready. He didn't do that last year, which is why Whisenhunt was rotating quarterbacks before Leinart busted his collarbone. The situation is no different this time around.

Kurt Warner says no new deal is imminent with the Cardinals, the East Valley Tribune reports. The veteran is in the final season of his deal and aims to play through the 2010 season.

Our View:If the Cards truly think Matt Leinart is the man, then they'd be wise to hold off. Warner will command much more than your average backup, especially since he played so well in 2007.

The Arizona Cardinals continue to talk with quarterback Kurt Warner about extending his contract, according to the Arizona Republic. Warner's agent, Mark Bartelstein said this morning that he talked to Arizona general manager Rod Graves briefly last week and likely will have another conversation after the owner’s meetings conclude this week. Warner, who is entering the last year of his contract, is due to make $4 million in salary and has a $5 million cap figure. The team would like to keep the veteran field general around, and lower his cap number in the process.

The Arizona Republic is reporting that the Cardinals and the agent for Kurt Warner are in preliminary discussions about extending the former MVP's contract, which is due to expire after the 2008 season. "We've talked about some things," said agent Mark Bartelstein. "It's something we might address over the next month or so." The report mentions that a new deal could be cap friendly, allowing the Cardinals to do more with their unsigned players.

The agent for Kurt Warner would like the Cardinals to award a $500,000 bonus that Warner just missed statistically last season, according to the East Valley Tribune. But it doesn’t look like he’s going to get it. Warner’s contract called for him to get a series of $500,000 bonuses, up to $1.5 million. He had four categories to reach, and he made two of them, good for $1 million. He just missed in the other two: finishing in the NFL’s top 10 in passing yards and finishing with a passer rating of 90.0 (he ended up at 89.9)
