Steve McNair, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, is progressing on schedule according to the Baltimore Sun. The Ravens quarterback is rehabilitating his shoulder and expects to be ready for the team's offseason programs. Mike Preston reports that McNair has heard talk about his demise and the speculation that the team is interested in trading for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. However, McNair told Preston he didn't concern himself with such matters. "Being a competitor, I understand that people are always going to put something, some name out there," said McNair, in his first public statements since the end of last season. "I'm not into speculation, I'm into reality. If it happens, then I'll deal with it."

Unless some team gives the Eagles multiple first-round draft picks, which is highly unlikely, according to the Philly.com, Donovan McNabb will be back as the team's starter. By using their franchise tag on L.J. Smith, the Eagles sent a signal of their commitment to making another - and perhaps final - run at a Super Bowl with their current core group. McNabb and the Eagles veterans are pushing the front office to be active in free agency and stock playmakers on both sides of the ball. The problem is there are no Randy Moss' currently available in the NFL market place.

L.J. Smith has been offered a one-year tender worth $4.522 million which is the amount of the average salary of the five highest paid tight ends during the 2007 season, according to philadelphiaeagles.com. "L.J. Smith has been a very productive tight end in our offense," said HC Andy Reid in a statement. "He is healthy and working his tail off so he can have a very successful 2008 season." Smith received the "non-exclusive" franchise tag designation which means he can sign the one-year deal, continue negotiating a long-term deal with the Eagles or entertain offers from other teams when free agency commences on Feb. 29. Starting QB Donovan McNabb expects Smith to receive a long-term deal because over the past six seasons, the Eagles have had a total of 90 starters who signed their second contract with the team, which is the highest total in the league.
