Daunte Culpepper has announced his retirement from the NFL, according to ESPN.com. "After taking a long look at my career and my personal convictions, I have decided to begin early retirement from the NFL effective immediately," Culpepper said

Our View:Not exactly the way Daunte wanted to go out. We have a hunch he'll consider coming back at some point next year, but we'll see.

Daunte Culpepper says he would consider coming to the Green Bay Packers in a backup capacity should the team feel uncomfortable using two rookies in that role, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "My ears are definitely opened to listen if they need a proven backup for Aaron," Culpepper said.

Our View:Culpepper was insistent before training camps opened that he would only go to a team that would give him an opportunity to start. Since he has not gotten much interest from anybody, his tune has changed.

Daunte Culpepper is surprised he is not employed as a quarterback in the NFL right now, according to the AP. He said, "I am doing good, however, I am a bit perplexed on why I am still waiting for an opportunity to play this year. I am going to wait until the 53-man rosters are set before I express an opinion about why that is. I will let you know if I am still unemployed by then."

Our View:Culpepper was being considered by Pittsburgh, but the club opted to go with Byron Leftwich instead as Culpepper wanted a chance to compete for a starting job. A few clubs could be in the market for Culpepper's services, but as a backup.

Correcting earlier reports, quarterback Daunte Culpepper was not signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, only Byron Leftwich was, according to John Clayton of ESPN.com.

Our View:Culpepper is interested in a starting job, and the Steelers obviously cannot accommodate him in that respect, so they chose Leftwich.

In response to the broken collarbone suffered by backup passer Charlie Batch, the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed both Byron Leftwich and Daunte Culpepper , according to the Sporting News.

Our View:Batch broke a collarbone in Friday's preseason opener, leaving the Steelers without a veteran behind starter Ben Roethlisberger. With Dennis Dixon and Mike Potts on the depth chart, Steelers officials decided to try the two experienced quarterbacks in what could be an open audition for backup. Batch figures to miss at least a month while his collarbone mends. That means Leftwich and/or Culpepper are likely to be with the Steelers once the season starter. Their first regular-season game is Sept. 7 against the Houston Texans. They have three exhibitions left, including Thursday at Buffalo.
