Luke McCown wants to compete for the starting quarterback job in Tampa Bay this season, according to the PewterReport. He stated, "Well you know it's always a competition. Jeff is our starter, but that doesn't keep me from competing to be the starter. I want to be the starter. Right now I'm the number two and competing. That's what were doing right now. We're competing through OTA's. It doesn't matter what you are on the depth chart it's about competing when you get on the field, being prepared, doing what you can to help the team win. And that's the whole point of a team. Everybody has a role. Everybody has a part. Whether I'm starting or being a backup I'm going to put everything I can into it, to help this team win. Again it's about preparation and being ready." McCown will likely lose out to Jeff Garcia for the starting gig, but could still serve as the team's top backup.

Jeff Garcia wants a new contract, according to the Tampa Tribune. Garcia stated on Tuesday that he is disappointed the team hasn't been willing to reward him with a new contract that would enable him to finish his career with the Buccaneers. He added, "At this point in my career, I'm no longer 24 or 25 saying, 'I'm going to prove to you I deserve this.' I feel like I've proved throughout my career. And I feel like at this time, it's time to just work with me, and you know what I bring to the team. You know what I've done for the team, and you know how much more I can do. And now I have a year under my system." Garcia maintained a solid 94.6 efficiency rating in 2007, but is nearing the end of his career.

Chris Simms has decided not to participate in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offseason workouts, an indication he no longer fits into next season's plans and could be traded, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Although the workouts are voluntary, Simms also skipped last week's quarterback orientation for the first time in his career. "I just think … it's in my best interest to continue my own workouts and to just wait and see what happens with the team," Simms said. "I don't really know what's going to happen. As far as the Bucs and the quarterback position goes, it's always an adventure." Simms, who has not taken a regular-season snap since rupturing his spleen in September 2006, said he is completely recovered from the surgery, which forced him to sit out all of last season. The Bucs have six quarterbacks under contract: Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese, Simms, Luke McCown, Bruce Gradkowski and the retired Jake Plummer.
