Jeff Garcia wants a new contract, and should he not receive one, he has hinted that he might be a holdout, reports Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:The Bucs clearly need Garcia to be the starting QB, despite the plethora of other players at that position on the roster. This doesn't sound like a serious situation quite yet, but there is still a few weeks to go before training camp starts.

Jeff Garcia spoke Wednesday of possibly retiring, but it turns out he was referencing the 2009 season and not this year, according to the St. Petersberg Tribune.

Our View:Garcia is ticked off that the Bucs haven't reworked his contract, he is due a little less than $3 million dollars this year, and he hasn't been shy about expressing his displeasure to the press. However, don't panic, Garcia won't be sailing off into the sunset until at least the 2009 season.

Tampa Bay passer Jeff Garcia spoke with reporters today and suggested that frustration over the lack of progress in contract negotiations has led him to consider retirement, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:The story from Talk quotes a television update from NFL Network's Adam Schefter, noting Garcia is visibly upset and, with one year left on his current contract (a contract he no longer values), is more than happy to walk off and call it a day. Of course, it could be simple posturing, but Garcia had better watch his step. Coach Jon Gruden seems to carry a ton of faith in Luke McCown and there are other options on the depth chart. Garcia is good... but he is old and he may not be in position to play this game.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia may be unhappy with his contract, but he intends to fulfill it and will not miss a day of training camp, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:Garcia has voluntarily participated in every offseason workout. He has one year left on a deal that will pay him a $2-million salary.

Jeff Garcia will more than likely be able to work out his contract concerns with the Bucs, according to the Tampa Tribune. “I’m very confident that it will all work itself out,’’ HC Jon Gruden said. “He was clutch for us. He’s a critical football player for us and hopefully it all works out.’’

Our View:Garcia managed the ball extremely well last year, and while his numbers certainly weren't eye-popping, he did exactly what Gruden wants him to do. Look for Garcia to be behind center for Week 1, but also don't expect much more than you say out of him last season.

Owner Bruce Allen talked about Jeff Garcia's contract situation on Wednesday. He doesn't mind that the quarterback has been public about his issues with an expiring deal. "Each player has to handle his business how he sees fit," Allen tells the St. Petersburg Times. "Jeff, for the last five years -- it's been well-documented -- he's been with five teams. I know he enjoyed the great success with coach Gruden and wants that to continue. That's not bad news, that's good news. We've got seven months to free agency and we've got plenty of time."

Our View:Allen is taking the line that most of us probably would in his situation. There's no way the Bucs want to commit to the 38-year-old Garcia beyond this season, and we'd be surprised if they extended his contract before the calendar turns to 2009.
May 13, 2008
Jeff Garcia hinted that he may hold out if his contract demands are not met, according to the Tampa Tribune. Garcia said, "There might come a time when I might have to stand up. I hate to do that to jeopardize my teammates because they’re out here, and I don’t want to let them down in any sort of way. But at some point you just want to see the respect from up top." He is entering the final year of a two-year deal worth $7 million and is reportedly seeking an extension that will bring his total payout to the league average for starters, which is around $7 million.

Our View:Garcia will be 39 at the start of the 2009 season, and the team could be hesitant to shell out a new deal for him. Garcia held a solid 94.6 efficiency rating in 2007, but is close to the end of the line in his NFL career.

Jeff Garcia wants a new contract, according to the Tampa Tribune. Garcia stated on Tuesday that he is disappointed the team hasn't been willing to reward him with a new contract that would enable him to finish his career with the Buccaneers. He added, "At this point in my career, I'm no longer 24 or 25 saying, 'I'm going to prove to you I deserve this.' I feel like I've proved throughout my career. And I feel like at this time, it's time to just work with me, and you know what I bring to the team. You know what I've done for the team, and you know how much more I can do. And now I have a year under my system." Garcia maintained a solid 94.6 efficiency rating in 2007, but is nearing the end of his career.

Jeff Garcia was effective despite his interception in Sunday's Pro Bowl connecting with Terrell Owens for the go-ahead fourth quarter score. Garcia was 8-of-10 for 117 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Our View:
February 10, 2008
Jeff Garcia hopes to begin talks with the Bucs about extending his contract with the team so he can end his career there. "...I feel like what I'm attempting to grasp or what coach Gruden would like me to grasp is still out there. I'm still working to get to that point, but it feels good to be challenged in those ways." No QB has been the starter for the Bucs in back-to-back seasons since 2002-04 (Brad Johnson), and with the team trying to lure Jake Plummer out of retirement, it's no sure thing that Garcia will be the starter next season, though a whole lot of things would have to happen to knock him out of the role since he is clearly the team's top option if healthy.
