Chad Pennington is reportedly favoring the right ankle he injured last season, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View:He sustained a high ankle sprain at the start of last season, and it seemingly continues to linger into 2008, as he was reportedly walking with a slight limp at times during Friday's practice session. If he doesn't get this under control and it continues to be an issue, then it could improve Kellen Clemens' chances of starting this season.

Chad Pennington is overhauling his throwing mechanics according to The Sporting News. The report notes that heading into the 2008 season, Pennington knows his 65.6 career completion percentage might not be enough to allow him to reclaim the starting job he lost to Clemens eight games into last season. So this offseason, his personal reclamation project began of reinventing himself.

Our View:Unless he can bolster his arm strength, his chances of reclaiming the starting role in New York are slim. His chances of being a fantasy starting option? Even less.

Quarterback Chad Pennington struggled during passing drills at the New York Jets organized team activities, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:In a passing drill (with no defenders), Pennington came up well short on a 15-yard ‘out’ route. Moments later, he bounced a 20-yard out and, perhaps overcompensating, badly overthrew his next pass, another 20-yard out, to receiver Laveranues Coles. It's still early in the process, but not the kind of update you want to hear, especially considering there was no pass rush in his face.

Chad Pennington worked out with the Jets first team on Thursday though he and Kellen Clemens figure to alternate working with the starting unit every other day, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:It looks like the starting spot is truly up for grabs here and will be determined by who performs better, which in our minds is that way that all position battles should be determined.

A rumor has emerged that the Ravens may be interested in trading for Chad Pennington if the Jets choose Matt Ryan in Saturday's draft, Scout.com reports.

Our View:We'll consider this idle speculation at this point. It seems more likely that the Ravens would try to trade up if Ryan actually slips down to the No. 6 spot in the draft.

Chad Pennington is not on the trading block, according to the Daily News. "Chad is under contract. I'm happy he is here. Eric (Mangini) is happy he is here and the best player will play. Chad is going to be here this year," said general manager Mike Tannenbaum. Pennington could easily be the starter coming out of training camp. But he and Clemens could have company this summer. The Jets held a private workout in Boston on March 21 for Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan, which was attended by Mangini, Tannenbaum and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. They are the three key quarterback decision-makers and they all would not have been there, if the Jets did not have serious interest in Ryan.

The Jets aren't only spending big bucks on free agents. Chad Pennington is also earning a hefty paycheck in 2008. According to the New York Daily News, Pennington's 2008 base salary is up to $6 million from $4.8 million due to a clause in his contract. His cap number for the coming season is $9 million. Ouch.
March 4, 2008
The New York Jets are in win-now mode making quarterback Chad Pennington the likely starter for the organization in 2008, according to the Daily News. This report could be more speculation than fact, as GM Mike Tannenbaum emphasized he’s not into a quick fix - and the recent flurry of free agent signings was made in the interest of building the franchise for the long-term. The much-maligned Pennington is expected to compete with Kellen Clemens for the starting job during the offseason.
February 22, 2008
New York Jets HC Eric Mangini announced the starting quarterback job would be an open competition in 2008, according to the Record. Mangini, who made the announcement at the Indianapolis scouting combine, dismissed any thought that Pennington would be traded, instead he will remain and compete with second-year QB Kellen Clemens. Neither player was particularly effective on a consistent basis last season, as New York finished the season ranked 25th in passing offense (188.4 yards-per-game).
January 8, 2008
Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum confirmed on Monday that the team will bring quarterback Chad Pennington back in 2008. When asked about potential trade offers for Pennington, Tannenbaum told the Daily News, "We would listen to anything, but I expect Chad to be back." Pennington will apparently compete with the underwhelming Kellen Clemens for the Jets starting job next season, and Tannenbaum also said they wouldn't attempt to renegotiate his $4.8 million salary becaue they are well under the salary cap.
