The New York Daily News reports that Kellen Clemens will be a legitimate threat to Chad Pennington's starting job next season. Pennington will enter camp as the starter but will have to look over his shoulder if Clemens continues to develop quickly. "When you pick a guy that high, you have to play him," an opposing AFC coach said of Clemens, who the Jets took in the second round.

"Chad's the quarterback right now," the coach said. Mangini added: "If someone earned the opportunity and somebody clearly distinguished themselves, then just like any other position, it would be evaluated," describing what it would take for him to pull Pennington in favor of backup Patrick Ramsey or rookie third-stringer Kellen Clemens. Pennington has sleeper value against the Detroit secondary Sunday, one of the worst in the league (13 TD passes allowed).

Chad Pennington threw for over 300 yards for the second straight game for the first time in his career on Sunday. Pennington completed 22-of-37 passes for 306 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. It's early, but Pennington's troublesome right shoulder looks fine so far.

Chad Pennington made a successful return from last season's shoulder surgery with a fantastic game in the season opener. Pennington completed 24-of-33 passes for 319 yards and two touchdowns. He didn't throw an interception, though he did lose a fumble.

Coach Eric Mangini has officially named Chad Pennington his starting QB, according to the AP. Patrick Ramsey, Kellen Clemens and Brooks Bollinger were all competing for the spot, but Pennington had long been considered the front-runner. "It's become really clear to me he's distinguished himself in the way I was looking for," Mangini said of Pennington. "He's made great progress in the preseason, especially over the last couple weeks. That consistency I've been looking for has been there, his presence, his ability to move the team, his leadership, all those things I've been looking for. He's done an outstanding job. It's clear to me he should be the starter, and he will be." Pennington played in only three games last year because of a shoulder injury.

Chad Pennington, who has been away from the Jets to deal with a family medical issue, returned to practice on Monday, according to Newsday. "When you deal with something like that, it still takes a day or two to get back into the swing of things again because you've been out of your element for four days and been pretty stressed out," Pennington said. "Today was good just to get back out on the field, fight through it, and concentrate on football."
