The Jets have listed Kellen Clemens as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Chiefs due to the rib injury that kept him off of the field last week. Chad Pennington would get his second consecutive start, which could be his last in a Jets uniform, if Clemens is unable to go.
December 21, 2007
Chad Pennington is expected to start Sunday in Tennessee, as Kellen Clemens is dealing with shoulder and rib injuries and has done very little this week. Pennington had an ordinary showing (25-38-184, no touchdowns or picks) in relief at New England last week.
October 31, 2007
The Jets will try to trade Chad Pennington in the offseason, according to the New York Daily News. Pennington is signed through 2011, and he turns 32 next June.
October 29, 2007
Chad Pennington has been benched in favor of youngster Kellen Clemens. Pennington really hasn't had that bad of a year, but at 1-7, the Jets have decided that it's time to see what they have in Clemens.
October 28, 2007
Chad Pennington was benched late in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against the Bills. Pennington completed 13-of-20 passes with no TDs and no INTs before leaving. Kellen Clemens struggled after taking over, completing just 5-of-12 passes for 67 yards and getting picked off twice.
October 24, 2007
The Jets will be sticking with Chad Pennington at quarterback for the time being. "I went back through the tape, looked at it and felt very good about the decision-making process," coach Eric Mangini said in the AP of Pennington's play last week against Cincinnati. "There were quite a few plays that I really liked." The Jets are 1-6 and fans have been begging to see Kellen Clemens under center, but they'll have to wait at least another week. When asked if Pennington is the starter just for now, Mangini offered only: "I'm saying he's the starter."
October 22, 2007
It looks like Jets coach Eric Mangini might finally be done with Chad Pennington as his starting quarterback. Following an ugly loss to the Bengals that dropped the Jets to 1-6, when asked if Pennington was still his starter, Mangini said, "I'll have to watch the tape," according to the New York Daily News. With a meaningless Hail Mary at the end of the game, Pennington actually ended up with decent fantasy numbers: 272 yards, three TDs, 1 INT. But all signs point to Kellen Clemens taking over the quarterbacking duties against Buffalo next week.
October 15, 2007
Chad Pennington had yet another unimpressive outing Sunday, as he finished with 128 passing yards, no touchdowns and one interception, and the Jets dropped to 1-5 on the season. Is it finally time for backup Kellen Clemens to replace Pennington as the starting quarterback? "No," is what coach Eric Mangini told reporters after the game when asked if he was considering a change at QB, according to the New York Daily News. Expect the public pressure to get Clemens in over Pennington to continue to mount, but time will tell if Mangini is ready to move on without Pennington at the helm.
October 11, 2007
Chad Pennington will try a unique strategy in dealing with his current slump. Instead of pressing to improve his poor performance, he will instead let the game come to him. "You hear the saying, 'More is better,'" Pennington told Newsday. "Well, sometimes less is better." Speculation continues to mount in New York that backup Kellen Clemens could and/or should take over for an ineffective Pennington, but Chad will get at least one more start this week against the Eagles to retain his job.
October 10, 2007
Quarterback Chad Pennington may be down to his last start in New York. Not only that the Jets QB has been listed as questionable with a lingering ankle injury. Backup Kellen Clemens has looked solid in relief this season, and many Jets fans have been calling for the second-year signal caller to replace Pennington.
October 8, 2007
Chad Pennington totalled 229 yards passing Sunday but countered his lone touchdown with three interceptions and a tough loss to the Giants. Nonetheless, coach Eric Mangini isn't ready to give up on Pennington. "Chad is the starting quarterback," said Mangini, according to the New York Daily News. You can safely expect the New York media and Jets fans to cry for Kellen Clemens to take over, but it appears they'll have to wait a while longer before that occurs.
October 4, 2007
After watching the Giants sack Donovan McNabb 12 times in Week 4, Chad Pennington is bracing for an onslaught on Sunday. When asked by Newsday about the Giants' ability to pressure the quarterback, Pennington said, "It's tough not to get happy feet, it's tough not to try to get rid of the ball earlier because of what's happened in the previous plays. That's the hardest thing." The Jets offensive line has played to mixed results so far this year, and they'll have their hands full trying to protect Pennington in Week 5.
September 23, 2007
Playing through an ankle injury, Chad Pennington completed 15-of-22 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday against the Dolphins. He also added a score on the ground. This performance should have been enough to keep Pennington his starting job, at least for the time being.
September 23, 2007
Chad Pennington is active for Sunday's matchup with the Dolphins. Though the Jets have made no official announcement about whether he or Kellen Clemens will start, all signs throughout the week have pointed to Pennington getting the nod. Given the uncertain status of his injured ankle and the possibility that he could be knocked out early and/or not play at all, you should steer clear of Pennington this week.
September 20, 2007
Chad Pennington took the majority of the snaps with the first team during practice on Wednesday and all signs continue to point towards him getting the nod as the starter in Week 3. "We're ahead of where we were last week, obviously," head coach Eric Mangini told Newsday. "We'll make sure that we're getting him enough reps so that he can be prepared, but not going so far, especially early in the week, that he has to scale back on Thursday or Friday. So we'll monitor that. We'll see how that goes." Barring a significant setback to his sprained ankle later this week, expect Pennington to get the nod on Sunday against the Dolphins.
September 18, 2007
Head coach Eric Mangini implied Monday that Chad Pennington will start in Week 3, health-permitting. "Chad always says he's ready to go, that's what you like about him," Mangini told Newsday. "But you've got to assess it and make the best decision you can based on all the information." Pennington continues to rehabilitate an injured ankle and was healthy enough to serve as the backup to Kellen Clemens in Week 2.
September 17, 2007
Chad Pennington served as the Jets No. 2 quarterback on Sunday and would have been ready to play if called upon. "Chad did an outstanding job all this week where he could be the No. 2 quarterback," coach Eric Mangini told the Newark Star-Ledger. "I just thought Kellen [Clemens] gave us the best chance to win."
September 14, 2007
Jets quarterback Chad Pennington did some drop backs in practice on Friday and is trying to convince the team’s coaches to let him play, according to ESPN. As of Thursday, is appeared as if the team was leaning toward starting Kellen Clemens in Pennington’s place.
September 12, 2007
Jets quarterback Chad Pennington was limited in practice Wednesday due a right ankle injury, and is unsure if he’ll play Sunday against Baltimore, according to ESPN. "It's just a day-to-day process and I'm working extremely hard around the clock to do everything I can to prepare myself to play," Pennington said. "I'm just taking it day by day and seeing how much progress I make each day."
September 10, 2007
Chad Pennington sustained an ankle injury during Sunday's game and eventually pulled himself out once the Pats had the game in hand. He said the joint was "unstable" and had X-rays taken after the game, according to the New York Daily News. He was in obvious pain when it happened, as he collapsed on the field before eventually hopping off on his good leg. The Jets didn't announce the results of the X-rays, so we'll have to wait to see whether Kellen Clemens will take the helm in Week 2 for his first NFL start.
August 20, 2007
Head coach Eric Mangini gave Chad Pennington a vote of confidence on Sunday, despite the quarterback's struggles in Friday night's preseason game. "I'm very comfortable with [naming Pennington the starter back in February]," Mangini told the Newark Star-Ledger. "I think Chad's had an outstanding camp." Pennington threw two interceptions, both of which were returned for touchdowns, on Friday against the Vikings.
August 17, 2007
Chad Pennington was shaky in his second start of the preseason, throwing two ill-advised passes that were returned for touchdowns. Pennington finished the night 7-for-10 passing, though his completions netted just 40 yards.
July 30, 2007
More than a year removed from shoulder surgery, Chad Pennington is more comfortable in training camp this year than he was last season. "I'm excited to be out here with my teammates and play with the guys day in and day out," Pennington told the Newark Star-Ledger. "I'm excited when I step off the field to be able to step into the film room and get better mentally instead of having to go immediately to the training room to focus on my shoulder."
January 9, 2007
Chad Pennington will have to re-earn his starting job next year during training camp, according to Newsday. "I think Chad has done a terrific job," coach Eric Mangini said. "But I essentially believe, as a core philosophy, that competition is a positive thing." Pennington's main competition will likely be Kellen Clemens.
January 5, 2007
Chad Pennington practiced Thursday and should be fine Sunday against New England. The Jets routinely list Pennington as probable - he's got a sore calf, apparently - but he's fully expected to start and be at full-throttle.
