With Alex Smith on IR and Shaun Hill dealing with back spasms, Chris Weinke will start Sunday's game for the 49ers. "Chris Weinke will start in the game," coach Mike Nolan said to Sports Network. "The backup will be Drew Olson. The third quarterback will come out of either Arnaz (Battle) or Michael Robinson. Hopefully, we'll just stay with Chris Weinke there for the entire game." In three games last season with the Panthers, Weinke completed 58.3 percent of his passes for 625 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions.

Niners quarterback Shaun Hill is suffering from back spasms, and missed practice on Wednesday. His status for Sunday’s game against Cleveland is questionable at this point, leaving former Panther Chris Weinke as the possible starter on Sunday.
March 6, 2007
The Panthers cut ties with Chris Weinke on Tuesday, according to the Sports Network.
December 21, 2006
Chris Weinke is dealing with a sore chest and was added to the injury report as probable Thursday, according to the AP. Nonetheless the injury didn't keep Weinke out of practice, and he's expected to start again this week while Jake Delhomme rests his thumb. Delhomme missed another practice Thursday and hasn't seen the field in over two weeks.
December 17, 2006
Making his second start in place of Jake Delhomme, Chris Weinke threw for 170 yards on 18-of-28 passing but had one interception and no touchdowns. The Panthers were blown out, and Weinke was eventually pulled so rookie Brett Basanez could see some action.
