Justin Smith feasted on the Detroit Lions on Sunday in San Francisco. He only had four tackles but forced a fumble, intercepted a pass and picked up his second sack of the season.

Our View:Smith has been used all over the field for the 49ers and he is clearly getting comfortable. It's his first interception since 2001 but more could be coming as he's seen some time at linebacker this season.

Justin Smith played every defensive snap in the 49ers' Week 1 loss against the Cardinals, and worked at several positions, including defensive tackle and outside linebacker, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:Smith had half a sack in the game, and tied for the team lead in tackles with seven. Smith looks to be productive with the 49ers as a key component of their defense and he is worth scooping up if dangling on the waiver wire.

The 49ers envision Justin Smith as their only defender that can reach double digits in sacks this season, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

Our View:The team is taking a look at him at outside linebacker in their 3-4 scheme. Smith only made two sacks in his final campaign in Cincinnati in 2007, and would not be able to record more than five or six at defensive end with the 49ers, but at outside linebacker, the team thinks he can get 10 or more.

The 49ers are reportedly giving Justin Smith snaps at right outside linebacker during their organized team activities, this according to Rototimes sources.

Our View:Smith played in the Bengals 43 scheme, and where exactly he best fits in the 49ers 34 is still a question mark for the team.

The San Francisco 49ers figure to run a hybrid 3-4 defense that also features a lot of 4-3, which would make sense after the club signed defensive end Justin Smith, according to USA Today. "He's going to be put in situations to make a lot of plays," 49ers GM Scot McCloughan said. "We would not have paid him the money we paid him unless we knew how to use him. You'll see him at end, you'll see him at tackle, you'll see him at times standing up. He's a special guy." We suspect there will be more 3-4 than 4-3 in Smith’s future. It appears that Smith will be utilized in many roles in 2008, which could negatively impact his IDP numbers.
