The Titans would like to re-sign quarterback Chris Simms, ESPN.com reports.

Our View:Simms could probably find better situations for playing time, but he is a solid third-string quarterback due to his experience.
November 9, 2008
Week 10 inactives: QB Chris Simms (3rd), WR Paul Williams, WR Chris Davis, CB Renaldo Hill, RB Chris Henry, LB Colin Allred, OT Michael Otto, DE Kyle Vanden Bosch.

Our View:Kerry Collins is good to go, as is middle linebacker Keith Bulluck. The line will miss Vanden Bosch, but the end has been nicked up for a few weeks.
October 6, 2008
Just two days after he was released to make room on the roster for punter Josh Miller, Chris Simms has been re-signed by the Titans, according to The Tennessean. "Chris totally understood the move (on Saturday), and we assured him we'd get him back under contract and we did,'' Coach Jeff Fisher said.

Our View:Simms will once again take up his clipboard as the Titans' third option behind Kerry Collins and Vince Young.
October 4, 2008
Chris Simms has been released by the Titans, according to the Tennessean. The team signed punter Josh Miller, and dropped Simms to make room on the roster.

Our View:He is expected to be re-signed early next week. The team needed a punter for Sunday's game at Baltimore as Craig Hentrich is out with back spasms. Vince Young moves up to the No. 2 role at quarterback behind starter Kerry Collins.
September 9, 2008
The Titans are expected to sign free agent quarterback Chris Simms on Wednesday, the Tennessean confirms. He recently worked out for the club, as did Joey Harrington, Doug Johnson, and Quinn Gray.

Our View:That's a good signing by the Titans, who need a capable backup now that Vince Young is slated to miss a few weeks. Simms should serve as the No. 2 to Kerry Collins this Sunday.
September 8, 2008
Quarterback Chris Simms flew in to meet with the Patriots, but they told him things had changed and they did not need him, so he left without working out for them, as did Tim Rattay, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:Simms will likely find a job sometime soon, but he couldn't have been pleased with having to make the trip only to be sent home.
September 8, 2008
Chris Simms is now on the Chiefs' radar after starting quarterback Brodie Croyle sustained a shoulder injury in Sunday's loss to the Patriots, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Damon Huard is the acting starter in Kansas City and rallied the team to a drive Sunday to tie the game that fell just short at the goal-line. Kansas City lost 17-10. With Croyle down, Huard would likely maintain the starting gig with Simms serving as the top backup if he is signed by the club.
September 7, 2008
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Chris Simms will visit the New England Patriots on Monday, according to NBC.

Our View:With reports that Tom Brady is out for the year, New England is probably not comfortable with the inexperienced trio of Matt Cassel, Matt Gutierrez and rookie Kevin O'Connell leading the team. At the very least, Simms has starting experience.
September 7, 2008
The New York Giants are interested in adding free-agent Chris Simms as their third quarterback, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View:The Giants are currently rostering only two quarterbacks (Eli Manning and David Carr), and would like to add some depth to the position. However, the Dallas Cowboys are also reportedly interested in Simms, as well as Brooks Bollinger.
September 1, 2008
Quarterback Chris Simms, released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is making a visit to the Baltimore Ravens, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:Simms would give the team depth, and possibly a starter, because Baltimore quarterbacks have their own issues. Joe Flacco is a rookie, Troy Smith has been unable to practice or play due to an illness, and Kyle Boller is dealing with a shoulder injury.
August 30, 2008
Chris Simms has been released by the Buccaneers, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:Simms is not eligible for waivers, which means he becomes an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team he picks. The source believes that the Bears may still be interested as they lack confidence in either Kyle Orton or Rex Grossman. If the Bears do pursue Simms, he would push acting No. 3 quarterback Caleb Hanie off the roster.
August 30, 2008
With final roster cuts coming today, quarterback Chris Simms figures to final get the release he has desired and hopes to have talks with several NFL teams about potential work behind center, according to the St. Petersburgh Times. "I don't think I'm going to be here. I think that's the writing on the wall, and that's what I'm prepared for," Simms said. "If I end up here? Great. My family and I love being here; we love living here. I love playing for this team. But I've been around the NFL long enough to know the situation, and I think most likely when (today) comes, I will be released and we'll go our separate ways. But it was a great run."

Our View:The catastrophic injuries to quarterbacks around the league never materialized, voiding hopes of trading Simms. Tampa Bay is not going to pay a $2-million premium for a left-handed insurance policy. It's possible the Bucs could keep five quarterbacks on the roster until early next week. An extra spot is created when tight end Jerramy Stevens goes on the suspended list for two games. But the team must decide what to do with fifth-round pick Josh Johnson, who might not clear waivers if it tries to sneak him onto the practice squad.
August 24, 2008
The Tampa Bay Bucs must cut their roster down to 75-to-80 players by 4:00pm EST on Tuesday, and embattled quarterback Chris Simms tells reporters he expects to be let go, according to the Pewter Report.

Our View:Tampa Bay currently has five quarterbacks on its roster - Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese, Luke McCown, Simms and rookie Josh Johnson. Simms does not believe he has a future with the Bucs, which is one of the reasons why he has asked to be released or traded. Simms did not play vs. the Jaguars on Saturday night, which has some wondering if his five-year tenure in Tampa Bay is about to come to an end. Simms is waiting to see if his wish to get out of Tampa Bay and have an opportunity to join another team is finally granted. The Fort Myers News-Press reported nearly 20 teams had sent representatives to the Bucs' preseason game versus New England to check Simms out and the Chicago Bears, in desperate need of competition at the position, are the most interested. If Simms is not let go, it is a sign that a trade could be in the works, but this seems unlikely as the Bucs can't possibly afford to keep so many roster spots tied by passers.
August 18, 2008
The Fort Myers News-Press reports that scouts from 20 pro teams were in attendance for Sunday's preseason game against New England, possibly tracking the performance of Chris Simms. Simms said, "I think if I’m here two weeks from now, they’re going to release me. Other than that, if I get traded before then, then I get traded. But if it comes down to the last cut, and I’m still here, they’re going to release me. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that." Simms went 2-for-4 with 24 passing yards in the game.

Our View:The Vikings, Cowboys, Colts, and Ravens all could be looking to make upgrades at backup quarterback soon.
August 11, 2008
The St. Petersburg Times states that the Bears and Cowboys reportedly had scouts watching Chris Simms during his preseason outing against the Dolphins.

Our View:He fared well as he completed 8-of-10 passes for 60 yards with a 91.7 efficiency rating on his three possessions, and he drove Tampa Bay to one touchdown and one missed field goal. If he continues to perform well he could be traded prior to final cuts. If not, he could be released.
August 9, 2008
As the Bucs prepare for their preseason opener tonight against Miami, the thought around the league is that several teams will be watching with hopes of seeing shimmers of hope from quarterback Chris Simms , according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View:Negotiations on a trade involving Simms could heat up in the next few days if the disgruntled outcast has a good showing in the squad’s preseason opener this evening. Simms wants out of Tampa, but the Bucs have not caved in to his demands yet and are taking a good look at him in practice to get a better sense of what he can offer after not having played in a regular-season game since early in the 2006 season. However, if he shines tonight, several teams could come forth with tempting offers that must be considered.
July 30, 2008
Contrary to recent rumors and reports, the Dallas Cowboys are not interested in adding disgruntled Tampa Bay passer Chris Simms , according to Star Telegram.

Our View:Owner Jerry Jones said there was "nothing there" when asked about the reports of the Dallas Cowboys talking to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers about a trade for former University of Texas quarterback Chris Simms. According to a source, even if the Cowboys have an interest in Simms, they would wait until the Buccaneers released him rather than trade for him.
July 29, 2008
The Dallas Cowboys are still interested in acquiring Tampa Bay quarterback Chris Simms if the Bucs will lower their asking price, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:The Cowboys have 39-year-old Brad Johnson backing up Tony Romo, so acquiring Simms would be a good move. Tampa will want to get what they can for him, but sooner or later they will have to move him.
July 26, 2008
Reports out of Tampa suggest the Chicago Bears are continuing to track the progress of quarterback Chris Simms as he prepares to partake in training camp and battle with the team for a new contract, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

Our View:The Bears have long been rumored to be interested in Simms and were hoping the Bucs would simply release their former starter. With Simms reporting to camp and coach Jon Gruden claiming he anticipates Simms will battle for the starting job (especially with Jeff Garcia engaged in a contract dispute of his own), it would seem the Bears, if they are truly interested, would need to formulate a trade offer to get the deal done. At this point, the timing is off. We expect the Bears to play a game of wait-and-see as the events unfold in Tampa. If Simms decides to leave camp due to frustrations over his contract, that would seem an optimal time to make a low-ball offer. We'll keep you posted.
July 25, 2008
Chris Simms has reported to training camp with the Buccaneers, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:Simms is not in camp just to bide his time, as the team fully expects him to compete for the starting job at quarterback currently held by Jeff Garcia.
July 22, 2008
In response to the report that quarterback Chris Simms will in fact be attending Bucs training camp, beginning on Friday, the team has announced they fully expect Simms to come in and compete for a starting job, according to PewterReport.com.

Our View:Simms may be newly motivated by the struggles for veteran passer and returning starter Jeff Garcia. Like Simms, Garcia has urged the Bucs to sign him to a new deal, but nothing has come forth and no contract revisions have been made. Thus it appears the Bucs may be pitting the two against each other, and the winner may reap the rewards. We'll keep you posted.
July 21, 2008
The Tampa Tribune indicates that Chris Simms will report to the Buccaneers when training camp begins Friday. He is still disgruntled but lacks a better option than to report, and he said, "I will be at camp. I have no clue what is gonna happen once I get there, we’ll see."

Our View:He will work as their number five quarterback at the beginning of camp. They have had a chance to trade him, but it looks like they would like to evaluate him, as he states he is healthy.
July 18, 2008
With neither Rex Grossman nor Kyle Orton doing much to make themselves stand out, the Chicago Bears would likely jump at the chance to acquire Chris Simms, but only if he is cut, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View:The Bears apparently don't want to make a trade for Simms, but it seems unlikely that Tampa would just let him go for free. If Orton and Grossman don't pick it up, however, it wouldn't be shocking to see Chicago make a play for Simms.
July 15, 2008
Chris Simms is unlikely to join the Lions, as suggested by the Detroit News. Although Simms is good friends with receiver Roy Williams (they were team-mates at Texas), the chances are slim the Lions will make a play for the quarterback if he is offered in a trade.

Our View:The Bears, Cowboys, and Lions were the three clubs reportedly interested in Simms, who hasn't played since 2006 due to a ruptured spleen.
July 14, 2008
The Lions are interested in potentially acquiring Chris Simms, Pro Football Weekly notes. The Cowboys and Bears are other suitors. The Bucs are expected to attempt to trade Simms, and the team may ask for a first-day draft pick.

Our View:Nobody is going to give the Bucs a first or second-round choice for Simms. They'll be fortunate to land a fifth-rounder. Anyway, this report suggests the Lions may not be enamored with Dan Orlovsky and Drew Stanton.
July 13, 2008
With Jeff Garcia slated to start this season in Tampa, the Bucs will try and trade Chris Simms without really knowing what his value is, this according to the Tampa Tribune. Head coach Jon Gruden is said to favor Brian Griese over Simms and then selected Josh Johnson in the fifth round of the draft which in this day and age, guarantees a signal-caller a roster spot. Simms is the fifth quarterback on Tampa Bay's depth chart and wants a chance to play somewhere.

Our View:Simms has said some harsh things about Gruden, similiar to those said by Key Johnson two years ago, and the quarterback wants this relationship to end.
July 8, 2008
The Cowboys are looking for a backup quarterback, and Chris Simms has been mentioned, according to the Star-Telegram. The current plan is to have Brad Johnson serve as Tony Romo's primary backup, but the team would like to upgrade. Simms' name continues to circulate around Valley Ranch, and he reportedly mentioned to friends he would be interested in playing for Dallas.

Our View:Johnson will be 40 in September, and Simms could be released by Tampa Bay at some point before the regular season. There is not a good selection of veteran free agent quarterbacks for the Cowboys to pick from, and Simms still has some upside.
June 17, 2008
Earlier we reported Tampa Bay passer Chris Simms has chosen to withhold from mandatory team practices and is suffering lost funds as a result. We now learn that the depth of those potential losses cuts much deeper, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:Simms feels he has been lied to and mistreated by coach Jon Gruden, but the decision to skip these practices could be a choice of great consequence. With Simms missing these practices, the team now has standing to recover $375,000 of the $3 million signing bonus given to Simms as part of the two-year agreement he signed in 2006. Further more, should Simms decide not to show for training camp, it gets worse as the Bucs can place him on the Reserve/Did Not Report list and would not be forced to save a roster spot for him. At the end of the day, Talk anticipates Simms could end up losing the entire $1.5 million if he chooses not to show for any of these team activities.
June 17, 2008
Chris Simms is not attending mandatory minicamp, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:He very much wants to leave Tampa Bay, and his absence today will cost him $8,000. Missing training camp would cost him $14,000 a day in fines.
June 9, 2008
Chris Simms told the Tampa Tribune that he can "never" forgive coach Jon Gruden for the way Gruden treated him last year while he was attempting to come back from his spleen injury. "And that's hard for me to say," Simms said. "It kills me to say that because the Bucs have been great to me. The fans there are great. I love being in Tampa; my family loves being in Tampa. It's an awesome sports town, a town that loves football. But the relationship between me and coach Gruden, it's broken. It just is, and I don’t see any way it's going to get better again."

Our View:Simms, who hasn't played since Week 3 of the 2006 season, hasn't reported to the team's voluntary camps and wants out of Tampa. The Bucs would like to give him his wish, though it remains to be seen which teams might be interested in the signal caller.
April 30, 2008
With a short list of less-than-attractive options at QB in Chicago, reports have surfaced suggesting the team is keeping a close eye on the status of Tampa Bay's Chris Simms , according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:The Bucs currently own the rights to seven different passers, and David Haugh of the Tribune reports the Bears are hoping to see Simms cut loose from the frenzied mess. Haugh suggests the Bears are likely to give consideration to Luke McCown and Bruce Gradkowski as well if they were set free from the Bucs' roster. None of those options are likely to excite the fans of Chicago, but at this point, any addition with experience would be of benefit.
April 2, 2008
If Chris Simms believes boycotting offseason workouts will be his ticket out of Tampa Bay, he might want to reconsider, according to the St. Petersburg Times. General manager Bruce Allen indicated he has not talked to any teams about trading Simms at the NFL owner meetings, nor given Simms' agent permission to begin that dialogue. "I think the good news on Chris is that he's 100 percent healthy," Allen said. "It's been some time since he's felt that way, and I think that bodes well for him. We have a long way to go until training camp and we obviously have a long season in front of us. That position does take a pounding." The Buccaneers have paid Simms $7.1 million over the past two seasons, but he hasn’t played a regular season game in 17 months since undergoing a splenectomy. Given the long period of inactivity, many general managers around the league feel he has limited trade value.
March 27, 2008
Chris Simms has decided not to participate in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offseason workouts, an indication he no longer fits into next season's plans and could be traded, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Although the workouts are voluntary, Simms also skipped last week's quarterback orientation for the first time in his career. "I just think … it's in my best interest to continue my own workouts and to just wait and see what happens with the team," Simms said. "I don't really know what's going to happen. As far as the Bucs and the quarterback position goes, it's always an adventure." Simms, who has not taken a regular-season snap since rupturing his spleen in September 2006, said he is completely recovered from the surgery, which forced him to sit out all of last season. The Bucs have six quarterbacks under contract: Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese, Simms, Luke McCown, Bruce Gradkowski and the retired Jake Plummer.
March 9, 2008
Bucs GM Bruce Allen said that Chris Simms could still be on the roster for training camp, according to the Tampa Tribune. Whether that happens will depend on his offseason performance in mini-camps, etc. The Bucs plan to bring five quarterbacks into camp -- maybe even six if Jake Plummer comes out of seclusion. He still has some upside, but with Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese, Luke McCown and Bruce Gradkowski in the mix, he has an uphill climb just to make the roster.
