It appears the cloudy quaterback scenario in Miami may be clearing, or at least the clues left thus far suggest it is. The Fins have announced Josh McCown , listed as the team's starting quarterback in their early depth chart release, will not appear in the team's first preseason game of the season, according to the Miami Herald. Reports from the Herald indicate coach Tony Sparano has informed John Beck that he will be playing the first and third quarters while rookie Chad Henne will man the second and fourth.

Our View:With Chad Pennington joining this mix and clearly sitting as the favorite to start in the regular season, the Fins need to determine which quarterbacks will stay and which will be moved elsewhere. This could be an opportunity for both Beck and Henne to show they deserve a shot, but one might also wonder if the desire to keep McCown healthy for a potential trade is serving as motivation. Regardless, the Dolphins will learn from the game and will be making decisions based on those performances. Unnamed sources with the team are quoted in the story, indicating Beck is already viewed as the odd man out. Thus the Fins are going to give him one more shot to strut, and if they don't like what they see, he will be moved. Stay tuned.

With the signing of quarterback Chad Pennington to a two-year contract, the tenures of Josh McCown and John Beck in Miami are shaky, according to ESPN.com. The Dolphins will not carry four quarterbacks on their roster, and Chad Henne is safe, leaving McCown or Beck as the choice.

Our View:Beck isn't likely to be released, but a trade is certainly possible. It's more realistic for McCown to get axed, but the team would probably try to trade him first as well.

Josh McCown is listed as the starting quarterback on the Dolphins' first depth chart, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Our View:Coach Tony Sparano noted that the depth chart can change at any time this week, and he listed the quarterbacks by seniority. John Beck is second with rookie Chad Henne third.

Pro Football Weekly reasserts that Josh McCown has taken a considerable lead in the race to become the Dolphins’ starting quarterback. Sources close to the club say he has impressed coach Tony Sparano with the ease with which he’s picked up the nuances of the offensive system. Additionally, he’s been terrific throwing on the run, specifically on rollouts, which the Fins are expecting to utilize often.

Our View:The sooner McCown is named the starter the better. The likely addition of Terry Glenn to a receiving corps of Ernest Willford, Ted Ginn Jr., and Derek Hagan will be a big boost to his fantasy potential. The current strong performances coming from Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown help the cause. However, even at his best, McCown will probably fall into the bottom five or so starting quarterbacks for Week 1.

The Sun-Sentinel reports that Josh McCown is clearly outplaying his younger competitors in the early stages of training camp. However, coach Tony Sparano has not deemed a frontrunner in the race for starting quarterback duties in Miami.

Our View:Sparano did admit that McCown is probably off to a better start than his younger cohorts simply because this is his seventh season and he's been in several different systems. "This isn't a secret but Josh has been in several systems, so it's a little bit easier for him to hear some of the installs and he knows how to handle the installs. It isn't new to him where it's the first time around maybe for Chad as far as getting a bunch of different stuff thrown at him each night."
