Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver expects to sign David Garrard to a long-term contract soon. "I think you can expect something on the quarterback. I think it'll be sooner than later," Weaver said on the team's official site. Garrard was terrific last year in the first year as a full-time starter, posting a 102.2 QB Rating.

The contract negotiations between David Garrard and the Jacksonville Jaguars have been progressing at a slower rate than many believed they would, according to Pro Football Weekly. The sticking point revolves around agent Al Irby's assertion that Garrard deserves a contract commensurate with the deal Tony Romo inked with the Cowboys, which was six years for $67 million. The Jags have countered by saying they believe Romo was overpaid, and that they don't think it's appropriate to commit such money to a player with only one year of full-time starting experience. Garrard is still likely to get a deal done before training camp, although it wouldn't come as too big a surprise if he agrees to an extension during the '08 season. The one thing for certain is that the Jags will make sure Garrard does not test the open market next offseason, even if it means slapping the franchise tag on him.

The agent for quarterback David Garrard said he hopes to reach a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the next few days, but left open the possibility the two sides won't agree on a new contract this year, according to Ultimate Jaguars. "Nothing is any different today than it was two months ago,' Al Irby said. "It could take two days, two weeks or not get done at all. This is the way negotiations go. One minute you're going down the right track, but then a snag can set you back.' If the two sides can't agree, Garrard would play out the final year of his current contract at just under $2 million and then become a free agent. The Jaguars would then have the option of slapping the franchise tag on him, which costs $10.7 million this year and will likely go up in the future.
