Coach Joe Gibbs said there is room for both Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts in Washington next year, according to the Washington Post. "We feel great about those two guys carrying the ball for us," Gibbs said. "They've been great partners in the past. Clinton leads off and Ladell had a huge portion of the offense and what he's done this year has been great -- great for him and great for us. And certainly Clinton's our guy. He's rushed for a ton of yards for us and Ladell has a huge role for us and certainly there's room for having two good running backs and Ladell can also do a lot of other things for us." Betts has reeled off four straight 100-yard games while Portis is out for the year following a broken hand and shoulder surgery.

As expected, Clinton Portis underwent surgery yesterday to repair the torn labrum in his left shoulder, according to the Washington Post. Portis already was done for the season due to his broken hand and will now require about six months to recover from his shoulder surgery.

As expected, the Redskins placed Clinton Portis on injured reserve yesterday, formally ending his season, according to the Washington Post. He had surgery Monday to repair his broken right hand, and he is slated for another procedure to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, which he dislocated in the preseason. Portis will need 4-5 months to recover from the shoulder procedure but should be fine for training camp.

The Redskins are expected to place Clinton Portis on the IR today, formally ending his season, according to the Washington Times. Portis had surgery Monday to insert three small screws into the base of his broken right ring finger. He has already dealt with shoulder, neck and ankle injuries this season. Portis, who already was battling neck, ankle and shoulder injuries, broke his right hand Sunday. Portis said he was told it would take 6-8 weeks to recover from Monday's surgery that repaired his hand, which would make him available at best only for the regular-season finale.

Portis is expected to have the injury surgically repaired as soon as today. Ladell Betts will be the primary running back in the interim, though T.J. Duckett should get some touches. It's coming around," Portis said. "I'm out of the cast. I did a little work moving around laterally, just seeing how it feels. It feels okay. Clinton Portis has a mild high-ankle sprain that could sideline him for practice during Washington's bye week, the Redskins official site reports. Portis expects to be available for the club's next game, Nov. 5 against Dallas. Portis had just 16 touches in the loss to the Colts last weekend; the Redskins apparently didn't want to risk Portis' health late in the day when the game got out of hand.

Clinton Portis claims the new Redskin offense "isn't suited to me," according to a Washington Times report. "I have to adapt to (Al Saunders') game plan," Portis said. "The game plan isn't just suited to me. It's a team effort and it's about spreading the ball around and getting the touches to all of the play makers. Right now, I haven't been getting the carries I expected to get, but it'll come." Portis at least is well-slotted for success this week, up against a Colts defense that's handing out a whopping 5.2 yards a carry, most in the NFL.

"If a guy doesn't practice, he's not going to play, so we'll downgrade him," coach Joe Gibbs said.
