D.J. Hackett's agent, Kevin Robinson, said his client received a phone call from superstar receiver Steve Smith during his free agent visit to Charlotte, according to USA Today. Hackett said he enjoyed talking with Smith, who helped convince him to sign with the Panthers. Hackett had never met Smith, but they have a mutual friend in current Seahawks wide receiver Deion Branch. "They talked about what the offense could be like and it got D.J. kind of pumped," Robinson said. Smith and Hackett could be one of the more lethal combinations in the league, if Hackett can stay healthy and quarterback Jake Delhomme can make a complete recovery from elbow surgery.

Wide receiver Deion Branch is in Birmingham, Alabama going through intensive rehabilitation from surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, according to USA Today. The Seattle medical staff expects Branch to miss training camp, but anticipate him contributing during the season. Branch had the surgery in January '08, and the normal rehab time for such an injury is between nine and 12 months, which makes it possible that he could be available sometime towards the end of September to the middle of October, if all goes well with his recovery.

The second opinion on Deion Branch's damaged left knee confirmed the diagnosis of the team doctors: Branch needs surgery to repair a torn ACL, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports. The injury occurred while Branch was making a cut in the first quarter of Saturday's loss at Green Bay. When asked about a timetable for a Branch return, this is what Mike Holmgren had to say. "I'll give you a range -- nine months, usually," Holmgren said. "While they can comeback and play, sometimes it's longer than that before they're really going the way they can go."
